In the present work, the treatment of synthetic waters doped with iron (II) has been studied. The treatment mechanism used in this study is the biological oxidation which consists, in test tubes, of bringing bacteria isolated on Petri dishes into contact with water containing divalent iron (II). These de-ironing bacteria (non-specific bacteria) are used to carry out laboratory biological oxidation experiments on iron (II) under different pH conditions (pH = 3.4 - 3.6, pH = 7.3 - 7.5 and pH = 9.8 - 10) and variable concentration of iron (II). Biological treatment trials included different concentrations of iron during time intervals of a day. Examination of the elimination kinetics of Iron (II) indicates a removal rate of 59.453% for an initial iron concentration in the synthetic solution of 1 mg·L−1 at basic pH (pH = 9.8 - 10). Therefore, the degradation of divalent iron by this method seems to be quite effective, but it should be noted that biological nitrification is impaired by the presence of high iron concentrations above 5 mg·L−1.

Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. Adequate management is an area of controversy, especially when it comes to children. The objective of our study was to assess the outcome of Graves’ disease treatment in Albert Royer Children Hospital of Dakar. This was a retrospective study conducted from 2001 to 2015, and which involved all children between 0 to 15 years of age who were being monitored in the Albert Royer National Children Hospital. The evolutionary modalities were: stability, remission, failure, relapse, lost to follow-up and death. The data were analyzed with SPSS software version 20.0. For the comparisons, the KHI 2 or Fisher test was used with a significance threshold (p < 0.05). During the study period, 88 children were enrolled. The average age was 8.6 years [ranging from 8 months to 15 years]. The consultation delay was 11.36 months. In our study, 61.4% of the patients were regular in the follow-up, the observance was good in 40.9% of the cases and 19 patients (21.6%) were lost to follow-up. Clinical courses of 69 children after treatment with Carbimazole for 37 months were promising in 21 cases (30.43%), with 17 cases of remission (24.63%) and 4 cases of stability (5.8%). Age older than 10, the initial ATD dose greater than 1 mg/kg/day and the initial free T4 lower than 50 pmol/l were significantly associated with remission with a p value of 0.01;0.024 and 0.004.

Introduction: the roots of Leptadenia hastata, (L hastata) are remedies from the Senegalese pharmacopoeia and are as widely used as the leaves. However, few researchers have devoted themselves to their toxicity, unlike the leaves. However, in the traditional pharmacopoeia, the indications for use are very different. The aim of our study was to study the effect of the administration of methanolic extracts of roots of L hastata on renal tissue, using an animal model. Materials and Methods: a cohort of 18 rats was studied with a random distribution of the animals in 3 groups (n = 6). The first group was the control group. The treated groups (Group II and III) received the methanolic extract of L. hastata with an administration of 500 mg / kg / day and 1000 mg / kg / day respectively, for 28 days. Results: The dose of 1000 mg / kg / day was lethal in group III, from the first week in females. Serum creatinine was significantly higher in rats given the root extract. There was kidney damage with vacuolar degeneration starting at 500 mg / kg / day. The lesions were more severe in group III with glomerular involvement characterized by retraction in the renal corpuscles. Conclusion: If the leaves of L hastata seem to be safe for consumption according to the majority of authors in the literature, the roots of this same plant could be harmful. In addition to the lethality observed at the doses tested, the lesions in the renal parenchyma would be dose-dependent.

Knowledge Attitudes, Practices and Factors Associated with Blood Donation in the Fatick Health District in 2019 (Senegal)

Introduction: Timely availability of safe blood or blood products is essential for all health care facilities where transfusion occurs, but in many developing and transitional countries, there is still a considerable gap between the need for blood and the supply available. The overall objective was to study knowledge attitudes, practices, and factors influencing blood donation in the general population in Senegal. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study conducted among the Fatick health district population from April 1 to 15, 2019. Thus, the sample is based on a two-stage survey. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire designed, pretested, and administered to 466 people by selected and trained enumerators. The data collected on the smartphone was analyzed using Epi Info 7.***.1.0 software. A descriptive and bivariate analysis was performed with a 5% risk of alpha error. Results: The average age of respondents was 35 years (±13), with 34 years (±12) for women and 38 years (±15) for men, and more than half of them between 20 and 40 years of age. A proportion of 87% of respondents lived in rural areas and had agriculture as their primary income source. More than half of the individuals (70%) were married, and 68% were educated. The level of knowledge of individuals about blood donation was low at 91.8%. On the other hand, more than half of them had good habits (53.65%). A proportion of 68.0% of individuals had an intention to donate in the future. However, only 24.68% of the population surveyed had already donated blood. Eighty percent of the donations were voluntary. However, 26.09% had repeated this practice. Factors that could influence the practice of blood donation were age, male sex (ORb = 2.18 [1.40 - 3. 37]), high level of education, good knowledge of blood donation (ORb = 2.14 [1.07 - 4.26]), the existence of a relatives donor (ORb = 3.4 [2.19 - 5.26]) and individuals who did not necessarily require permission from a

Stroke represents the 2nd cause of mortality and 1st cause of physical disability in the adult population. In Senegal, it represents 30% of hospitalization and 2/3 of the mortality in the department of neurology in the capital city, Dakar. Objective: To specify the types of stroke and to evaluate diagnostic delays in Senegal’s regional hospitals. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, multicentric study for 4 years (from 2014 to 2017) including any patient presenting a clinical suspicion with a CT scan confirmation of stroke in one of the 9 regional hospitals in Senegal with a recruitment period of 6 months per hospital. CT scans were performed with a 16 slices machine in 6 hospitals, 4 slices in 2 hospitals and 2 slices in 1 hospital. We studied the types and location of strokes, the associated signs and the time from stroke onset to admission and the time from admission to CT scan. Results: 655 patients were retained including 322 men and 333 women for an M/F ratio of 0.96. The average age was 63 years (range: 7 years, 112 years). High blood pressure was noted in 59.2% of patients and diabetes in 10.7% of patients. Strokes were ischemic in 76% of cases involving the middle cerebral artery in 73% of cases and hemorrhagic in 24%, of which 80.7% were deep localized. A mass effect was noted in 7.5% of cases, an engagement in 6.9% of cases and ventricular hemorrhage in 2.7% of cases. The delay between the onset of the deficit and admission was less than 6 hours in 10.6% of patients. The time between the onset of stroke and admission to hospital was specified in 416 patients (63.5%) of the study population, it was less than 6 hours in 10.6% of patients, between 6 hours and 24 hours for 29.3% and more than 24 hours for 60.1%. Between admission and the CT scan, the time was precise in 459 patients (70%), it was less than 6 hours in 37.9%, between 6 hours and 24 hours in 43.6 % and more than 24 hours in 18.5%.
