Colorectal cancer(CRC)remains one of the leading causes of mortality from malignant diseases *** general terms,CRC presents high heterogeneity due to the influence of different genetic and environmental factors;also,the neoplastic cells are strongly influenced by the extracellular matrix and several surrounding cells,known together as the tumor microenvironment(TME).Bidirectional communication takes place between the tumor and the TME through the release of autocrine and paracrine *** hormone-related peptide(PTHrP)is a cytokine secreted by a wide variety of tissues and is able to regulate several cellular functions both in physiological as well as in pathological *** exerts its effects as a paracrine/autocrine factor,although its mode of action is mainly *** has been shown that this peptide is expressed by several tumors and that the tumor secretion of PTHrP is responsible for the malignant humoral *** years ago,when our research group started studying PTHrP effects in the experimental models derived from intestinal tumors,the literature available at the time addressing the effects of PTHrP on colorectal tumors was limited,and no articles had been published regarding to the paracrine action of PTHrP in CRC *** on this and on our previous findings regarding the role of PTH in CRC cells,our purpose in recent years has been to explore the role of PTHrP in *** analyzed the behavior of CRC cells treated with exogenous PTHrP,focalizing in the study of the following events:Survival,cell cycle progression and proliferation,migration,chemoresistance,tumor-associated angiogenesis,epithelial to mesenchymal transition program and other events also associated with invasion,such us the induction of cancer stem cells *** work summarizes the major findings obtained by our investigation group using in vitro and in vivo CRC models that evidence the participation of PTHrP in the acquisition of an aggressiv

In this work,active and edible films for food packaging were obtained by intensive mixing and compression molding of the wheat gluten(WG)glycerol-plasticized *** essential oil(TEO,10 and 15 wt.%)was incorporated as the active component microencapsulated inβ-cyclodextrins(β-Cd)and included directly into the biopolymer matrix for *** was found that films incorporating microencapsulated TEO are more soluble in water(total soluble matter(dry method)of about 33%and 36.6%vs.22.4%and 18.6%,for films containing 10%and 15%TEO,respectively)but less rigid than those obtained with free oil(elastic tensile moduli of 6.9 and 3.1 vs.9.9 and 6.8 MPa,for films containing 10%and 15%TEO,respectively),although the water vapor permeability of the former is lower(4.9510−9 and 6.2910−9 vs.8.8510−9 and 11.1310−9 g/Pa*s*m,for films containing 10%and 15%TEO,respectively).Active films containing both free and encapsulated TEO inhibited gram(+)as well as gram(−)bacteria and exhibited enlarged antioxidant properties,with the latter presenting slightly better *** addition,encapsulation slowed the release rate of TEO from the films,allowing the bioactive to remain active in the film for much ***,the present work revealed that films prepared from TEO/β-Cd microcapsules included in compression-molded wheat gluten matrices showed great potential to be used as an active food packaging.

Electronic Band Structure and Optical Parameters of Spinel SnMg_(2)O_(4) by Modified Becke–Johnson Potential

The electronic band structure and optical parameters of SnMg_(2)O_(4) are investigated by the first-principles technique based on a new potential approximation known as modified Becke–Johnson(mBJ).The direct band gap values by LdA,GGA and EV-GGA are underestimated significantly as compared to mBJ-GGA,which generally provides the results comparable to the experimental ***,the present band gap value(4.85 eV)using mBJ-GGA is greatly enhanced to the previous value by EV-GGA(2.823 eV).The optical parametric quantities(dielectric constant,index of refraction,reflectivity,optical conductivity and absorption coefficient)relying on the band structure are presented and *** first critical point(optical absorption's edge)in SnMg_(2)O_(4) occurs at about 4.85 eV.A strong absorption region is observed,extending between 5.4 eV to 25.0 *** SnMg_(2)O_(4),static dielectric constantε1(0),static refractive index n(0),and the magnitude of the coefficient of reflectivity at zero frequency R(0)are 2.296,1.515 and 0.0419,*** optoelectronic properties indicate that this material can be successfully used in optical devices.

Antifertility properties ofCentella asiatica ethanolic extract as a contraceptive agent: Preliminary study of sperm proteomic

Objective:To investigate the antifertility properties ofCentella asiatica L. ethanolic extract and identify the sperm proteomic changes in treated male ***: A total of 32 male Sprague-dawley rats were divided into two groups: control group (n=16) received distilled water and treatment group (n=16) which received 300 mg/kg ofCentella asiatica L. extract for 42 d. After the treatment period, the number of implantation sites was recorded and the sperm proteomic changes were analysed by 2d gel electrophoresis. In addition, the expression of protein spots was quantified by MALdI-TOF ***:Centella asiatica L. extract resulted in low number of implantation sites in the treatment group (100.00±2.82) compared to the control group (183.00±2.14). The percentage of infertile male rats in the treatment group was higher (43.75%) compared to the control group (18.75%). Proteomic analysis showed the expression of protein spots identified in the treatment group decreased with 234 spots compared to the control group with 282 ***:The results revealed that there was antifertility activity in the male rats with the administration ofCentella asiatica L. ethanol extract and the identified proteins could provide understanding on the adverse effect ofCentella asiaticain male reproductive system.

An Improved Study of Electronic Band Structure and Optical Parameters of X-Phosphides (X=B, Al, Ga, In) by Modified Becke-Johnson Potential

We report the electronic band structure and optical parameters of X-Phosphides （X=B, AI, Ga, In） by first-principles technique based on a new approximation known as modified Becke-Johnson （roB J）. This potential is considered more accurate in elaborating excited states properties of insulators and semiconductors as compared to LdA and GGA. The present calculated band gaps values of BP, AlP, GaP, and InP are 1.867 eV, 2.268 eV, 2.090 eV, and 1.377 eV respectively, which are in close agreement to the experimental results. The band gap values trend in this study is as： E9 （mBJ-GGA/LdA）〉 E9 （GGA）〉 Eg （LdA）. Optical parametric quantities （dielectric constant, refractive index, reflectivity and optical conductivity） which based on the band structure are aiso presented and discussed. BP, AlP, GaP, and InP have strong absorption in between the energy range 4-9 eV, 4-7 ev, 3-7 eV, and 2-7 eV respectively. Static dielectric constant, static refractive index and coefficient of reflectivity at zero frequency, within mBJ-GGA, are also calculated. BP, AIP, GaP, and InP show significant optical conductivity in the range 5.2-10 eV, 4.3-8 eV, 3.5- 7.2 eV, and 3.2-8 eV respectively. The present study endorses that the said compounds can be used in opto-electronic applications, for different energy ranges.

Effect of Nitrogen on Growth and Yield of Pineapple Grown on BRIS Soil

The physical and chemical properties of BRIS （beach ridges interspersed with swales） soil are unsuitable for agricultural purposes. A proper fertilizer and crop management practices are required. The relationship between different level of nitrogen fertilizer, growth and pineapple fruit yield vary N36 were studied. The experiment was conducted using randomized complete block design of seven treatments with four replicates, Prior to artificial flower induction, seven different rates of nitrogen fertilizer at 0, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1,000 and 1,200 kg-ha^-1 were applied in four equal split doses. As the level of nitrogen fertilizer was increased, a decrease in acidity of fruits and an increase in crown weight were observed. However an increase in mean length of d leaf, mean fruit length, mean fruit weight, mean fruit to crown ratio were obtained as the rate of nitrogen fertilizer was increased from 0-600 kg.N-ha^-1. Further increase however led to a decrease in the same parameters.
