AIM:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. METHOds:Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). REsULTs:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FsH(Pscontrols)and increased levels of LH in untreated cirrhotic ***,IGF-1 treatment normalized testicular transferrin expression and cellular proliferation and reduced serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and Ps untreated cirrhotic group). CONCLUsION:The testicular barrier is altered from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

Mitochondrial protection by low doses of insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰin experimental cirrhosis

AIM： To characterize the mitochondrial dysfunction in experimental cirrhosis and to study whether insulin-like growth factor-Ⅰ （IGF-Ⅰ ） therapy （4 wk） is able to induce beneficial effects on damaged mitochondria leading to cellular protection. METHOds： Wistar rats were divided into three groups： Control group, untreated cirrhotic rats and cirrhotic rats treated with IGF-Ⅰ treatment （2 μg/1O0 g bw/d）. Mitochondrial function was analyzed by flow cytometry in isolated hepatic mitochondria, caspase 3 activation was assessed by Western blot and apoptosis by TUNEL in the three expedmental groups. REsULTs： Untreated cirrhotic rats showed a mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by a significant reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential （in status 4 and 3）; an increase of intramitochondrial reactive oxigen species （ROs） generation and a significant reduction of ATPase activity. IGF-Ⅰ therapy normalized mitochondrial function by increasing the membrane potential and ATPase activity and reducing the intramitochondrial free radical production. Activity of the electron transport complexes Ⅰ and Ⅲ was increased in both cirrhotic groups. In addition, untreated cirrhotic rats showed an increase of caspase 3 activation and apoptosis. IGF- Ⅰ therapy reduced the expression of the active peptide of caspase 3 and resulted in reduced apoptosis. CONCLUsION： These results show that IGF- Ⅰ exerts a mitochondrial protection in experimental cirrhosis leading to reduced apoptosis and increased ATP production.

Although many causes of Alzheimer’s disease(Ad)may exist,both the original amyloid cascade and tau hypotheses posit that abnormal misfolding and accumulation of amyloid-β(Aβ)and tau protein is the central event causing the ***,that conclusion could be only partly true,and there is conflicting evidence about the role of both proteins in Ad,being able to precede and influence one *** researchers argue that these proteins are mere executors rather than primary causes of ***,there have been continuing refinements of both hypotheses,with alternative explanations proposed.Aβand tau proteins may be independently involved in specific neurotoxic pathways;yet there may be other crucial processes going on in early ***,accumulating evidence suggests that Aβand tau act synergistically,rather than additively in disease onset(Jeremic et al.,2021,2023a).

Aging and dynamics of Information: The deeper side of Biology (An Interdisciplinary Commentary)

The relationship between the evolution of the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the evolution of mass estimated as body weight in complex organisms such as human beings show the association between dissipated energy and information recovered as material structure. In such a context, it is necessary to highlight that the metabolic rate estimated as the energy dissipated per unit of mass presents the same rate of change as the mechanical speed estimated as distance traveled per unit of time. We describe this as a logical equivalence that has consequences on the geometry of the system. Our study proposes to describe the relationships between BMR, body weight, and the geometry of these systems in the same way that relativistic mechanics describes the relationships between matter, speed, and the geometry of the space in which the variables of a physical system are defined. It is exactly the same mechanical description, but considering five dimensions instead of four. The concept of information density limit is decisive in this theoretical framework since it contributes to explaining the changes in the geometry of these systems, their order-chaos transitions, and their general holographic description.

A comprehensive investigation on nonlinear vibration and bending characteristics of bio-inspired helicoidal laminated composite structures

Bio-inspired helicoidal composite laminates, inspired by the intricate helical structures found in nature, present a promising frontier for enhancing the mechanical properties of structural designs. Hence, this study provides a comprehensive investigation into the nonlinear free vibration and nonlinear bending behavior of bio-inspired composite plates. The inverse hyperbolic shear deformation theory(IHsdT) of plates is employed to characterize the displacement field, with the incorporation of Green-Lagrange nonlinearity. The problem is modeled using the C0finite element method(FEM), and an in-house code is developed in the matLAB environment to solve it numerically. Various helicoidal layup configurations including helicoidal recursive(HR), helicoidal exponential(HE), helicoidal semi-circular(Hs), linear helicoidal(LH), and Fibonacci helicoidal(FH)with different layup sequences and quasi-isotropic configurations are studied. The model is validated, and parametric studies are conducted. These studies investigate the effects of layup configurations, side-to-thickness ratio, modulus ratios, boundary conditions, and loading conditions at different load amplitudes on the nonlinear vibration and nonlinear bending behaviors of bio-inspired composite plates. The results show that the laminate sequence exerts a substantial impact on both nonlinear natural frequencies and nonlinear bending behaviors. Moreover, this influence varies across different side-to-thickness ratios and boundary conditions of the bio-inspired composite plate.

Are urbanization, biotic and social factors associated with the song frequency and song entropy attributes of three urban syntopic passerines?

Urban environments have challenging characteristics for bird acoustic communication. High levels of anthropogenic noise, as well as vegetation structure(e.g., in urban parks), can potentially affect the song frequency characteristics of several bird species. An additional factor such as the abundance of conspecific and heterospecific vocalizing birds may play an important role in determining the structure of bird songs. In this study, we analyzed whether noise levels, vegetation percentage, and abundance of conspecifics and heterospecifics influence the song characteristics of three syntopic songbird species: House Finch(Haemorhous mexicanus), Rufouscollared sparrow(Zonotrichia capensis), and House sparrow(Passer domesticus) living in urban sites. We recorded songs of these species and measured the peak frequency and entropy of their songs at 14 sites in the city of san Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico. We found that the song peak frequency of House Finch and House sparrow's songs was negatively related to the vegetation. The peak frequency of neither of the three species correlated with the average noise level. However, the abundances of conspecific and heterospecific were related to the peak frequency of the three species' songs. The entropy of the House Finch and House sparrow songs was positively and negatively related, respectively, to noise levels. House sparrow song entropy was negatively related to the percentage of vegetation. song entropy of House Finches was negatively associated to conspecific and House sparrow abundance. song entropy of Rufous-collared sparrows was positively related to conspecific abundance. In conclusion, the song peak frequency and song entropy of the three songbird species were differentially related to urban noise, vegetation, and conspecific and heterospecific abundance, suggesting these factors influence bird song characteristics.

Co,Ni,and Zn iso-reticular coordination polymers of 2,5-dihydroxyterphthalic acid(H_(2)dot)can be rapidly obtained under room temperature and aqueous conditions using either sodium or ammonium hydroxide as the bases to deprotonate the *** use of metal bromides and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide(TBAOH)as the base allows the green synthesis of ionic metal-organic frameworks(MOFs),characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRd),Fourier transform infrared(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy(sEM),thermo gravimetric analysis(TGA),H-nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),elemental analysis,and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPs),and employed in the pressure,solvent,and additive-free CO_(2)fixation to epoxides by its cycloaddition to epichlorohydrin,exhibiting a cooperative behavior between the MOF and the ionic liquid formed within the framework,achieving TONs of the confined tetrabutylammonium bromide(TBABr)up to 700.

sickle cell anemia (sCA) is a prevalent genetic disorder primarily affecting individuals of African descent and populations in malaria-endemic regions, with significant global public health implications. sickle cell crises are their most common acute complication, characterized by episodes of intense pain and systemic manifestations that impair quality of life and impose a high healthcare burden. We present the case of a 19-year-old male diagnosed with sCA since the age of two, who developed a sickle cell crisis precipitated by right basal pneumonia. The patient exhibited sudden-onset, cyclic lumbar pain with progressive dyspnea. Initial management included multimodal pain control, volume optimization, and targeted antimicrobial therapy to achieve clinical stabilization. This case underscores the importance of a comprehensive approach to managing sickle cell crises, addressing both symptomatic relief and the prevention and treatment of complications. It also highlights the need for public health strategies promoting early diagnosis, access to disease-modifying therapies such as hydroxyurea, and interdisciplinary follow-up to mitigate the socioeconomic and clinical impact of sCA.

Machine learning empowers efficient design of ternary organic solar cells with PM6 donor

Organic solar cells(OsCs) hold great potential as a photovoltaic technology for practical ***, the traditional experimental trial-and-error method for designing and engineering OsCs can be complex, expensive, and time-consuming. Machine learning(ML) techniques enable the proficient extraction of information from datasets, allowing the development of realistic models that are capable of predicting the efficacy of materials with commendable accuracy. The PM6 donor has great potential for high-performance OsCs. However, it is crucial for the rational design of a ternary blend to accurately forecast the power conversion efficiency(PCE) of ternary OsCs(TOsCs) based on a PM6 ***, we collected the device parameters of PM6-based TOsCs and evaluated the feature importance of their molecule descriptors to develop predictive models. In this study, we used five different ML algorithms for analysis and prediction. For the analysis, the classification and regression tree provided different rules, heuristics, and patterns from the heterogeneous dataset. The random forest algorithm outperforms other prediction ML algorithms in predicting the output performance of PM6-based TOsCs. Finally, we validated the ML outcomes by fabricating PM6-based TOsCs. Our study presents a rapid strategy for assessing a high PCE while elucidating the substantial influence of diverse descriptors.

Evaluation of drought indices to identify tolerant genotypes in common bean bush(Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

drought is one of the major abiotic stresses often causing negative impacts on bean crops in the Andean region in Colombia. An experiment under the greenhouse conditions was carried out to assess the effect of a prolonged drought period(15 days) at two different phenological stages(vegetative or reproductive) on grain yield and yield components of five bush bean cultivars(ICA-Cerinza, Bachue, NUA35, Bianca, and Bacatá). Nine tolerance indices including stress susceptibility index(ssI), tolerance(TOL), mean productivity(MP), geometric mean productivity(GMP), stress tolerance index(sTI), yield stability index(YsI), yield index(YI), Harmonic mean(HM), and drought sensitivity index(dsI) were calculated based on grain yield under non-stressed(YP) and drought(Ys) conditions. Based on the different drought indices, genotypes ICA-Cerinza and NUA35 had the best performance under drought conditions in both studied phases, which reflected in a reduction of grain yield ~≤40%. The biplot analysis also showed a clear superiority of these two genotypes at both phenological stages. Results also showed that ssI was more effective to identify genotypes less affected by drought. The above results allowed us to conclude that ICA-Cerinza and NUA35 may be considered for agricultural areas where long periods of water deficit are expected and can be used in breeding programs for drought tolerance.
