Relation between serum progranulin, inflammatory markers and visceral fat in childhood obesity

Aim: To study serum progranulin (PGRN) level in children with obesity and its relationship to inflamamatory markers and visceral fat. Methods: Fifty obese children and 50 controls aged 10-18 years were recruited. Demographic, anthropometric and biochemical features were collected according to a standard protocol. Serum progranulin levels, serum IL-6 and hsCRP were measured using elISA. Insulin resistance was calculated by the homeostasis model (HOMA-IR) using the following formula: HOMA-IR = fasting insulin (mU/L) × fasting glucose (mmoL/L)/ 22.5. The maximum visceral fat thickness (VFT) and the minimum subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) were measured by ultrasonography. Results: In the obese group, a significant increase was found in serum PGRN (48.87 ± 42.33 ng/mL) compared to control group (30.18 ± 23.82 ng/mL). Progranulin correlated significantly with VFT (r = 0.475), IL6 (r = 0.368), Insulin(r = 0.440) and HOMA-IR (r = 0.379). The mean serum progranulin in the high tertile VFT group was significantly higher than those in the low tertile and middle tertile groups (P = 0.030 and P = 0.039 respectively). VFT was highly positively correlated to progranulin, SFT, IL6, insulin, HOMA-IR and hsCRP (P = 0.001, 0.000, 0.001, 0.001, 0.003 and 0.003). However, the correlation coefficient between SFT and progranulin was insignificant. Summary: we demonstrated for the first time that serum PGRN concentrations increased in Egyptian obese children. The concentrations of serum PGRN correlated closely with visceral fat and IL6. Conclusion: PGRN may contribute to the pathogenesis of chronic inflammation in obesity. It could be a novel marker of visceral fat in obesity. Thus PGRN could be a potential therapeutic target for management of chronic inflammation in obesity.

Characteristics of Antioxidant Isolated from Some Plant Sources

Antioxidant characteristics of ginger roots, guava leaves, guava seeds, orange peel, sesame coat, rice bran and wheat germ as affected by ethanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, hexane and petroleum ether were evaluated. Petroleum ether extract of ginger roots, ethanol extracts of guava leaves, guava seeds, orange peel and sesame coat and ethyl acetate extracts of rice bran and wheat germ appeared to possess higher antioxidant activity than those from other solvents. Ginger roots, orange peel and guava leaves exhibited higher antioxidant activity than that of α-tocopherol, while guava seeds, sesame coat, rice bran and wheat germ had lower antioxidant activity than that of α-tocopherol. Guava leaves extract had the highest total phenolics content among the other plant material extracts followed by ginger roots, sesame coat and orange peel extracts. However, total flavonoids content was the highest in ginger roots extract followed by guava leaves extract. Ferulic was the highest phenolic compounds in guava leaves and sesame coat extracts. However, chlorogenic acid was the highest phenolic compounds in ginger roots extract. Antioxidants in ginger roots, guava leaves and sesame coat extracts as well as α-tocopherol were heat stable with 73.1, 73.8, 66.7 and 71.6% activity, respectively, after heating at 100°C for 180 min. Induction periods of sunflower oil containing 2% guava leaves and 2% ginger roots extracts were increased by 230.6% and 226.7%, respectively. However, induction period of sunflower oil containing sesame coat was increased by 174.1%, at 0.5% concentration. Similar increment was found for the protection factor. Ginger roots, guava leaves and sesame coat might be promising sources of natural antioxidant to be used in food products.

Manual inspections of infrastructures such as highway bridge, pavement, dam, and multistoried garage ceiling are time consuming, sometimes can be life threatening, and costly. An automated computerized system can reduce time, faulty inspection, and cost of inspection. In this study, we developed a computer model using deep learning Convolution Neural Network (CNN), which can be used to automatically detect the crack and non-crack type structure. The goal of this research is to allow application of state-of-the-art deep neural network and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies for highway bridge girder inspection. As a pilot study of implementing deep learning in Bridge Girder, we study the recognition, length, and location of crack in the structure of the UTC campus old garage concrete ceiling slab. A total of 2086 images of crack and non-crack were taken from UTC Old Library parking garage ceiling using handheld mobile phone and drone. After training the model shows 98% accuracy with crack and non-crack types of structures.

Removal of Aniline Blue from Aqueous Solutions Using Ce1-xBixCrO3 (x = 0, 0.5, 1)

The removal of aniline blue dye from aqueous solutions using the A-site doped perovskite Ce1-xBixCrO3 (x = 0, 0.5, 1) was investigated. The perovskite oxides were synthesised using Sol-Gel method and characterised by conventional powder X-ray diffraction technique. The X-ray diffraction measurements suggested that doping with Bismuth Ion influences both the crystal structure and the particle size of the oxides, and consequently affects the adsorption properties. It was found that both CeCrO3 and Ce0.5Bi0.5CrO3 compounds are orthorhombic and have approximate particle size of 87 and 36 nm respectively, whereas BiCrO3 oxide has rhombohedral space group symmetry and the particle sizes are less than 49 nm. The batch mode study demonstrated that the removal capacities of Aniline Blue at 150 min and pH = 4.3 for Ce0.5Bi0.5CrO3, CeCrO3 and BiCrO3 are 779.67, 705.45 and 440.18 mg/g respectively. The results reflect the influence of the A site doping on the adsorption properties of the oxides. The removal of Aniline Blue was found to be negatively correlated with temperature and pH.

In this paper, we propose a new design procedure for printed dipole array antennas. Applications of these arrays are devoted to wireless communication systems, mainly base stations and beam steerable antennas. All the designs have been developed at the frequency of 3 GHz. This structure is chosen in order to enhance the gain and minimize the backside radiations of an antenna array with a very simple feeding.

Towards Enhanced Program Comprehension for Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Systems

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an emerging paradigm for orchestrating software components to build new composite applications that enable businesses, government agencies and other organizations to collaborate across institutional boundaries. SOA offers new languages and a variety of software development tools that enable software engineers to configure software as services and to interconnect services with other services independent of differences in operating platform and programming and communicating languages. However, SOA composite applications introduce additional complexity into the construction, deployment and maintenance of software, for the purpose of aggravating the issue of program comprehension, which is at the heart of software maintenance. This article describes the challenges in SOA program comprehension and reports on the results of a two-part case study aimed at identifying information that would help a SOA software maintainer. Analysis of the results indicates a need for higher-level abstractions and visualizations that can enhance conventional text-based search to support SOA program understanding. This paper then reports on several specific abstractions, visualization methods, and the development of an intelligent search tool to enhance comprehension of the relationships and data within a SOA composite application.

Chemical Composition,Cytotoxic and Anti-arthritic Activities of Hexane Extracts of Certain Schinus Species

The genus Schinus(Anacardiaceae)comprises about 29 species that are utilized in both traditional and current medicine to alleviate various disorders such as rheumatism,bronchial infections,stomach upset,menstrual disturbance,bronchitis,and *** this study we aimed to investigate the chemical composition of hexane extracts obtained from Schinus polygamous and Schinus terebinthifolius leaves as well as their cytotoxic and anti-arthritic *** GC-MS analysis of *** leaves revealed identification of fifty-five components:being betulin(6.54%),phytol acetate(5.27%),lupeol(3.96%),palmitic acid methyl ester(3.58%)and heptacosane(3.25%).While,seventeen compounds were identified in *** leaves,predominately characterized by phytol(14.70%),lupeol(13.33%),linolenic acid methyl ester(11.17%),palmitic acid methyl ester(7.74%),and 28-oxours-12-en-3-yl acetate(7.44%).Both extracts showed moderate cytotoxic activities against hepatocellular carcinoma cells with IC_(50) values of 102.65 and 65.55μg/mL,*** colorectal carcinoma cell line presented IC_(50) values of 217.78 and 83.55μg/mL,***,both extracts provided moderate anti-arthritic effects(IC_(50):80.12 and 63.09μg/mL,respectively)using protein denaturation test,compared to diclofenac sodium(IC_(50)=15.12μg/mL).

Optical Measurements of Thermotropic Liquid Crystals

In this work, an experimental approach was used for measuring birefringence of thermotropic liquid crystal materials at different wavelengths in the visible region by using speckle interferometry. Also the values of the refractive indices were measured for these thermotropic liquid crystal materials in isotropic and liquid crystal phases at different wave-lengths. Temperature dependency of the refractive indices for each LC sample at certain wavelengths was investigated in the isotropic and in LC phases.

Bayesian and Frequentist Prediction Using Progressive Type-II Censored with Binomial Removals

In this article, we study the problem of predicting future records and order statistics (two-sample prediction) based on progressive type-II censored with random removals, where the number of units removed at each failure time has a discrete binomial distribution. We use the Bayes procedure to derive both point and interval bounds prediction. Bayesian point prediction under symmetric and symmetric loss functions is discussed. The maximum likelihood (ML) prediction intervals using “plug-in” procedure for future records and order statistics are derived. An example is discussed to illustrate the application of the results under this censoring scheme.

Diversity of Entomopathogenic Fungi in Argane Forest Soil and Their Potential to Manage Mediterranean Fruit Fly （Ceratitis capitata）

The present study forms a part of biological control against the medfly （Ceratitis capitata） and seeks to isolate and determine the diversity of the medfly-associated entomopathogenic fungi in soil samples collected from Argane （Argania spinosa） forest, in different localities of Souss-Massa region. Search and isolation of the indigenous populations of Ceratitis capitata entomopathogenic fungi was carried out by using larvae of this pest as baits. After trapping, isolation and identification of fungal isolates, a pathogenicity test was used to select fungal strains that have significant virulence potential against the Mediterranean fruit fly. The degree of virulence was estimated by the ability of the fungus to induce the disease and/or the death in the insect and also by calculating the lethal time 50 （LT50）. The obtained results were clearly demonstrated the sensitivity of medfly to tested fungal strains and particularly to strains of Fusarium sp., Aspergillus niger and Scopulariopsis sp. that have shown high mortality rates （more than 84%） and to Trichoderma harzianum, Scedosporium sp., Epicoeeum sp. and Ulocladium sp. with more than 70% mortality for the two tested concentrations. Furthermore these strains showed short LT50 （less than 83 hours）. All these results confirm the presence of entomopathogenic fungi of Ceratitis capitata in Argane soil, and prove the potential of entomopathogenic fungi for biocontrol of the Mediterranean fruit fly under laboratory conditions.
