A critical review on the developments of rock support systems in high stress ground conditions

Extreme ground behaviour in high-stress rock masses such as rockburst prone and squeezing ground conditions are encountered in a range of underground projects both in civil and mining *** occurrence of such ground behaviour types are difficult to predict and special design and construction measures must be taken to control *** the most appropriate support system in such grounds is one of the major challenges for ground control engineers because there are many contributing factors to be considered,such as the rock mass parameters,the stress condition,the type and performance of the support systems,the condition of major geological structures and the size and geometry of the underground *** main characteristics and support requirements of rockburst-prone and squeezing ground conditions are herein critically reviewed and characteristics of support functions are *** types of energy-absorbing rockbolts and other support elements applicable for ground support in burst-prone and squeezing grounds are *** differences in the choice and economics of ground support strategies in high-stress ground conditions between civil tunnels and mining excavations are *** support benchmarking data and mitigation measures for mines and civil tunnels in burst-prone,squeezing and heavily swelling grounds conditions are briefly presented by some examples in practice.

Enhancing the spontaneous imbibition rate of water in oil-wet dolomite rocks through boosting a wettability alteration process using carbonated smart brines

Most fractured carbonate oil reservoirs have oil-wet ***,the process of imbibing water from the fractures into the matrix is usually poor or basically does not exist due to negative capillary *** achieve appropriate ultimate oil recovery in these reservoirs,a water-based enhanced oil recovery method must be capable of altering the wettability of matrix *** studies showed that carbonated water can alter wettability of carbonate oil-wet rocks toward less oil-wet or neutral wettability conditions,but the degree of modification is not high enough to allow water to imbibe spontaneously into the matrix blocks at an effective *** this study,we manipulated carbonated brine chemistry to enhance its wettability alteration features and hence to improve water imbibition rate and ultimate oil recovery upon spontaneous imbibition in dolomite ***,the contact angle and interfacial tension(IFT)of brine/crude oil systems were measured for several synthetic brine samples with different ***,two solutions with a significant difference in WAI(wettability alteration index)but approximately equal brine/oil IFT were chosen for spontaneous imbibition *** the next step,spontaneous imbibition experiments at ambient and high pressures were conducted to evaluate the ability of carbonated smart water in enhancing the spontaneous imbibition rate and ultimate oil recovery in dolomite *** results showed that an appropriate adjustment of the imbibition brine(i.e.,carbonated smart water)chemistry improves imbibition rate of carbonated water in oil-wet dolomite rocks as well as the ultimate oil recovery.

On Polar Decomposition of Tensors with Einstein Product and a Novel Iterative Parametric Method

This study aims to investigate the polar decomposition of tensors with the Einstein product for theﬁrst *** polar decomposition of tensors can be computed using the singular value decomposition of the tensors with the Einstein *** the following,some iterative methods forﬁnding the polar decomposi-tion of matrices have been developed into iterative methods to compute the polar decomposition of ***,we propose a novel parametric iterative method toﬁnd the polar decomposition of *** the obtained conditions,we prove that the proposed parametric method has the order of convergence *** every iteration of the proposed method,only four Einstein products are required,while other iterative methods need to calculate multiple Einstein products and one tensor inversion in each ***,the new method is superior in terms of efﬁciency ***,the numerical comparisons performed among several well-known methods,show that the proposed method is remarkably efﬁcient and accurate.

Square wave voltammetric quantification of folic acid,uric acid and ascorbic acid in biological matrix

Nowadays, modified electrodes with metal nanoparticles have appeared as an alternative for the electroanalysis of various compounds. In this study, gold nanoparticles（GNPs） were chosen as interesting metal nanoparticles for modifying carbon paste electrode（CPE）. GNPs and the gold nanoparticles-modified carbon paste electrode（GNPs/CPE） were characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy（TEM） and scanning electron microscopy（SEM）. GNPs/CPE as a simple and sensitive electrode was used to study three important biological molecules： folic acid（FA）, uric acid（UA） and ascorbic acid（AA）. Square wave voltammetry（SWV） was used as an accurate technique for quantitative measurements. A good linear relation was observed between anodic peak current（ipa） and FA（5.2 × 10（-6）– 2.5 × 10（-5）M）, UA（1.2 × 10（-6）– 2.1 × 10（-5）M） and AA（1.2 × 10（-6）– 2.5 × 10（-5）M） concentrations in simultaneous determination of these molecules.

Doppler cooling of^(88)Sr atoms is studied in the presence of off-resonant red-detuned fluctuating laser *** a semi-classical approach,we show that the relevant physical quantities in the cooling process,such as optical forces,the damping coefficient,Doppler temperature,and atom number in the trap,are strongly affected by the laser amplitude and phase *** find that the Doppler cooling limit is higher than the predicted Doppler theory for non-fluctuating *** implies an additional heating mechanism exists due to the laser ***,our numerical analysis shows that the effect of laser power stability on reducing the number of trapped atoms in a magneto-optical trap is more substantial than the effect of laser linewidth.

HIF-1α pathway: role, regulation and intervention for cancer therapy

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) has been recognized as an important cancer drug target. Many recent studies have provided convincing evidences of strong correlation between elevated levels of HIF-1 and tumor metastasis, angiogenesis, poor patient prognosis as well as tumor resistance therapy. It was found that hypoxia (low O2 levels) is a common character in many types of solid tumors. As an adaptive response to hypoxic stress, hypoxic tumor cells activate several survival pathways to carry out their essential biological processes in different ways compared with normal cells. Recent advances in cancer biology at the cellular and molecular levels highlighted the HIF-1α pathway as a crucial survival pathway for which novel strategies of cancer therapy could be developed. However, targeting the HIF-1α pathway has been a challenging but promising progresses have been made in the past twenty years. This review summarizes the role and regulation of the HIF-1α in cancer, and recent therapeutic approaches targeting this important pathway.

Analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties of hydroalcoholic extracts of Malva sylvestris, Carum carvi or Medicago sativa, and their combination in a rat model

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the hydroalcoholic extracts of Malva sylvestris flowers or Carum carvi and Medicago sativa seeds, alone and in combination, which have been used in traditional Iranian ***: Male Wistar rats were divided into 6 treatment groups: distilled water, sodium salicylate(SS),M. sylvestris extract(600 mg/kg), C. carvi extract(600 mg/kg), M. sativa extract(300 mg/kg) and combined extract(including 300 mg/kg M. sylvestris and C. carvi extracts, and 150 mg/kg M. sativa extract). The formalin pain model was used to evaluate the antinociceptive effects of the treatments. For anti-inflammatory effect, acute(one hour after injection) and chronic(during a week after injection)paw inflammation was measured after subcutaneous injection of 2.5% formalin in the ***, tissue samples from all groups were prepared for histopathological ***: The combined extract significantly inhibited the nociception in the acute phase of the formalin test(P < 0.001). In the chronic phase, all the extracts and SS had significant analgesic effect(P < 0.001).Analgesic activity of the combined extract was significantly stronger than SS(P < 0.01). In the acute inflammation model, M. sylvestris, C. carvi and the combined drug had significant inhibitory effects against paw edema(P < 0.05). All extracts, individually and in combination, significantly alleviated chronic paw inflammation(P < 0.01). The combined extract had much more anti-inflammatory activity than SS(P < 0.05). Histopathological results indicated improvement and reduction of inflammatory factors in the treatment ***: M. sylvestris, C. carvi and M. sativa have analgesic and anti-inflammatory ***, each of these extracts or a mixture of them might be a valuable alternative drug to control pain and inflammation.

Viscous fingering and its effect on areal sweep efficiency during waterflooding: an experimental study

Viscous fingering is one of the main challenges that could reduce areal sweep efficiency during waterflooding in oil reservoirs. A series of waterflooding experiments were carried out in a Hele-Shaw cell at ambient temperature during which areal sweep efficiency was estimated and techniques to ease the fingering problem were examined. The onset and propagation of viscous fingers were monitored as a function of both injection rate and injection/production positions. Image processing techniques were utilized to quantitatively investigate the propagation of fingers. The experimental results show that, under specific conditions, increasing the number of finger branches could improve the areal sweep efficiency, whereas growth of a single narrow finger has a negative impact on oil displacement efficiency. According to the obtained results,increasing the injection rate improves the areal sweep efficiency up to a critical rate at which viscous fingers start to *** impact of heterogeneity of the medium on distributing the viscous fingers was also investigated by introducing two different arrangements of fractures in the model. The results show that fractures perpendicular to the direction of flow would distribute the displacing water more uniformly, while fractures in the direction of flow would amplify the unfavorable sweep efficiency.

The smart magneto-rheological visco-elastomer (MRVE) has a promising application to vibration *** dynamic characteristics are described by complex moduli which are applicable to linear ***,experimental results show remarkable nonlinear relations between force and deformation for certain large deformations,and the nonlinear dynamic modeling needs to be *** present study focuses on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of *** MRVE was fabricated and specimens were tested to show nonlinear mechanical properties and dynamic *** nonlinear effect induced by applied magnetic fields was investigated.A phenomenological model for the dynamic behaviors of MRVE was proposed to describe the nonlinear elasticity,linear damping and hysteretic effect,and the corresponding equivalent linear model in the frequency domain was also given for small *** proposed model is applicable to the dynamics and control analysis of composite structures with MRVE.

Review on application of nanoparticles for EOR purposes: A critical review of the opportunities and challenges

Nanoparticles have already gained attentions for their countless potential applications in enhanced oil ***-sized particles would help to recover trapped oil by several mechanisms including interfacial tension reduction, impulsive emulsion formation and wettability alteration of porous media. The presence of dispersed nanoparticles in injected fluids would enhance the recovery process through their movement towards oil–water interface. This would cause the interfacial tension to be reduced. In this research, the effects of different types of nanoparticles and different nanoparticle concentrations on EOR processes were investigated. Different flooding experiments were investigated to reveal enhancing oil recovery mechanisms. The results showed that nanoparticles have the ability to reduce the IFT as well as contact angle, making the solid surface to more water wet. As nanoparticle concentration increases more trapped oil was produced mainly due to wettability alteration to water wet and IFT reduction. However, pore blockage was also observed due to adsorption of nanoparticles, a phenomenon which caused the injection pressure to increase. Nonetheless, such higher injection pressure could displace some trapped oil in the small pore channels out of the model. The investigated results gave a clear indication that the EOR potential of nanoparticle fluid is significant.
