A high angular resolution near-infrared image that shows the intensity of polarization for the GG Tau A binary system was obtained with the Subaru Telescope. The image shows a circumbinary disk scattering the light from the central binary. The azimuthal profile of the intensity of polarization for the circumbinary disk is roughly reproduced by a simple disk model with the Henyey-Greenstein phase function and the Rayleigh function, indicating there are small dust grains at the surface of the disk. Combined with a previous observation of the circumbinary disk, our image indicates that the gap structure in the circumbinary disk orbits counterclockwise, but material in the disk orbits clockwise. We propose that there is a shadow caused by material located between the central binary and the circumbinary disk. The separations and position angles of the stellar components of the binary in the past 20 yr are consistent with the binary orbit with a = 33.4 AU and e = 0.34.

Bromination of Pd Compounds during Thermal Decomposition of Tetrabromobisphenol A

We conducted thermal tests using the reagent tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and various Pd compounds to study the chemical forms of Pd obtained during the pyrolytic and oxidative decomposition of TBBPA. Thermal testing was conducted in an electric furnace at temperatures of 280°C - 800°C in an Ar or Ar-O2 (5%) atmosphere for a heating period of 40 min. Scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results revealed that Pd bromide was formed in the mixture of TBBPA and PdO after heating to 450°C in the Ar atmosphere. In addition, thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis showed that as the heating temperature was increased from 350°C to 730°C, weight loss occurred at a nearly constant rate, indicating that Pd bromide decomposed in this temperature range.

Thermal Decomposition of Printed Circuit Board in the Presence of Zinc Oxide under Inert and Oxidative Atmosphere: Emission Behavior of Inorganic Brominated Compounds

Thermal degradation of a FR-4 type printed circuit board, PCB, containing brominated flame retardant has been studied both in inert and oxidative atmosphere for the emission control of harmful brominated compounds. The presence of oxygen in atmosphere resulted in the reduction of the yield of hydrogen bromide, one of the major brominated compounds in thermal treatment, and in the enhancement of the formation of bromine and hypobromous acid. The intentional addition of zinc oxide to the PCB powder sample gave rise to the fixation of Br as zinc bromide. It also resulted in the promotion of the release of brominated compounds in comparison to the case of pure PCB. Thus, the addition of the oxide can be a benefit with respect to the bromine fixation and the kinetics of thermal treatment of PCB as well as metal recovery.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament Ganglion: Case Report

Intra-articular ganglion of the knee is uncommon and it shows non-specific symptoms. In this report, we present for a treatment of the ganglion arising from the PCL and the mechanism of pain. The case is a 33-year-old male with pain in his left knee. On presentation, he had no history of locking or giving way of the knee, but had pain on standing. At the first medical examination, the range of motion of his knee was full, with no loss of extension, and there was no effusion or swelling, but the terminal knee flexion was painful. McMurray’s test was negative, and the collateral and cruciate ligaments were clinically stable. On MRI, ganglion cysts droved from PCL appear as well-defined cystic multiloculated masses. The patient underwent arthroscopy through the standard anteromedial and anterolateral portals. Consequently, it was diagnosed as a ganglion cyst. The pain disappeared completely after the surgery and neither PCL ganglion nor symptoms recurred up to 9 months post-surgery. The intra-articular ganglion of the knee often is asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. But the reports of ganglion cysts of the knee have been increasing with the increasing availability and use of MRI. We considered that the mechanism of the pain due to ganglion in the cruciate ligament was stimulation of the synovial nerve terminal. One key point for consideration in this study is that arthroscopy should be performed through posterior portal to observe the whole of the PCL and ganglion cysts because it was difficult to observe both the PCL and ganglion cysts with anterior portal. While arthroscopy did not confirm continuity of the ACL and meniscus, it was considered that the ganglion cysts developed in the PCL because of the continuity with the PCL.

Brains of 41 residents without neurodegenerative diseases in the high-incid ence area of ALS/parkinsonism-dementia complex (ALS/PDC) of the Kii Peninsula of Japan were neuropathologically examined. Neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in th e hippocampal area were present in 11 of the 41 cases, but the frequency of NFT -positive cases in each age group was similar to that of the normal Japanese p opulation and far less than that of Guamanians without ALS/PDC.
