A cross-flow wind turbine near a structure was tested for the performance. The results showed that the performance of a cross-flow wind turbine near a structure was up to 30% higher than the one without a structure. In addition, we tried to get higher performance of a cross-flow wind turbine by using an Inlet Guide Structure and a Flow Deflector. An Inlet Guide Structure was placed on the edge of a structure and a Flow Deflector was set near a cross-flow wind turbine and can improve ambient wind environments of the wind turbine, the maximum power coefficients were about 15 to 40% higher and the tip speed ratio range showing the high power coefficient was wide and the positive gradients were steep apparently.

Most of BN was precipitated around the spherical MnS and formed the compound of MnS and BN during the isothermal treatment at 850 ℃ after austenizing at 950-1050 ℃. Most of MnS was transformed into polygon when austenized at 1 150 ℃ or above, which could not be the nuclei of BN anymore. During the insulation process at 850 ℃, MnS kept the state of monomer. The compound of MnS and BN at earlier time was of fine polycrystalline in spherality and BN was formed as a plate-like monocrystal on a certain part of the polycrystalline when its dimension reached 0.6 μm.

A time-dependent,quasi-steady state thermal model(GREENHEAT)based on the lumped estimation of heat transfer parameters of greenhouses has been developed to predict the hourly heating requirements of conventional *** model was designed to predict the hourly heating requirements based on the input of greenhouse indoor environmental control parameters,physical and thermal properties of crops and construction materials,and hourly weather data including temperature,relative humidity,wind speed,and cloud *** model includes all of the heat transfer parameters in greenhouses including the heat loss for plant evapotranspiration,and the heat gain from environmental control *** show that the predicted solar radiation data from the solar radiation sub-model are a reasonable fit with the data from the National Solar Radiation Database(NSRDB).Thermal analysis indicates environmental control systems could reduce 13–56%of the total heating requirements over the course of a year in the study *** the winter season,the highest amount of greenhouse heat is lost due to conduction and convection,and the heat used for evapotranspiration is dominant in the ***,the model was validated with actual heating data collected from a commercial greenhouse located in Saskatoon,and the results show that the model satisfactorily predicts the greenhouse heating requirements.

Greenhouse vegetable production in Canadian Prairies is important for creating a sustainable regional food economy,especially in northern *** study included the estimation of heating demand for year-round production and evaluation of the economic feasibility of greenhouse vegetable production(tomato,cucumber,and pepper)in a conceptually designed greenhouse(0.6 ha)located in remote northern communities in Saskatchewan,*** heating simulation was based on a greenhouse heating simulation model(GREENHEAT)developed by the authors *** simulation results showed that the annual heating requirement for the production of tomato,cucumber,and pepper are 1486 MJ m^2,1657 MJ m^2,and 1754 MJ m^2,*** economic analysis indicates the net return(NR)from the production of tomato,cucumber,and pepper,are C$69.2/m^2(in Canadian dollar,CAD),C$41.5/m^2,and C$43.8/m^2,respectively,based on the market price C$3.5/kg,C$2.7/kg,and C$8.0/kg,and yields of 55.0 kg m^-2,65.0 kg m^-2,and 23.0 kg m^-*** net present value(NPV)for the tomato,cucumber,and pepper production are C$1.9 M,C$1.2 M,and C$1.1 M,respectively,and the benefit-cost ratio(BCR)are 1.38,1.21,and *** economic feasibility analysis indicates the year-round production of vegetables in a greenhouse at remote northern Saskatchewan would be economically profitable.

A Study on Relationship among Blade Camber Direction and Pitch Angle and Performance of a Small Straight-Blade Darrieus Wind Turbine by Using Scale Test Model and Gurney Flap

Straight-blade Darrieus vertical axis wind turbines are used as medium and small size wind turbine because of higher power output in vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). In our previous study, the relationship between the performance and Reynolds number based on airfoil chord length had been investigated by using small-scale test models of lift-type VAWT, and the results showed that the performance of tested wind turbine models with small diameter was clearly lower than that of the large-scale field test machine, and its performance also varies significantly with the blade pitch angle. In this study, we focused on the performance of a small-scale straight-blade Darrieus VAWT, the relationship among the blade airfoil camber direction and the pitch angle, and the performance of the small-scale VAWT was examined experimentally by using a small-scale VAWT test model with Gurney flap which was a small flat plate. Gurney flaps with its height h, as a ratio to the blade chord length c, h/c = 0.036 to 0.055, were attached to the blades of the VAWT test model, in addition, the attaching direction of the Gurney flap on the blade was examined for both inward and outward of the rotor, and the pitch angle was also examined for a range of −5 to 10 degrees. These results are discussed comparing with the result of the VAWT without Gurney flap and considering the numerical results for the single blade with/without the Gurney flap. The results showed that the performance of the tested VAWT was reversed between the inward and outward Gurney flaps around a pitch angle of 10 degrees. That is, the inward Gurney flap was superior at a pitch angle of less than 10 degrees, while the outward Gurney flap was effective at a pitch angle of more than 10 degrees. We aimed to examine paracellular barrier function in cultured mouse lung microvascular endothelial cells (LMECs). The transcellular resistance of LMEC monolayers yielded an electrical resistance of approximately 19 Ω × cm2 at days 6 - 7 in culture when the cells reached confluence, and paracellular permeable clearance of sodium fluorescein was the lowest on day 6 in culture, suggesting the formation of tight junctions (TJs) in cultured LMECs. Moreover, the expression of TJ-associated proteins, occludin, claudin-1 and -4 and zonula occludents 1 (ZO-1) was detected in LMECs at day 6 in culture. However, mRNAs of occludin, claudin-1 and -4 and ZO-1 were already expressed on day 1 after culture, and large variations were absent in the mRNA levels of occludin, claudin-4 and ZO-1 between days 1 and 7 in culture, when the level of each mRNA on day 1 in culture was used as a basal level. However, the claudin-1 mRNA level gradually increased up to approximately 7-fold on day 7 in culture over the basal level. These results indicate that the drastic increase in the mRNA expression level of claudin-1 leads to the strong formation of TJs.

Novel eradicative high-dose rate brachytherapy for internal mammary lymph node metastasis from breast cancer

AIM: To develop a method of delivering an eradicative high radiotherapeutic dose safely preserving the surrounding skin in the treatment of internal mammary lymph node metastasis (IMLNM) of breast cancer. METHODS: We report a 38-year-old female patient with a solo IMLNM showing no response to 60 Gy in 2.5 Gy fractions of external beam radiotherapy. To eradicate this tumor, a boost brachytherapy plan was created after percutaneous insertion of an applicator needle into the IMLNM lesion avoiding the pleura and vessels under ultrasound monitoring. According to the dose distribution, the required thickness of a spacer between the skin and the tumor was determined, and hyaluronic gel was injected up to this thickness under ultrasound monitoring. We evaluated skin doses, target doses and clinical outcome. RESULTS: All procedures were performed easily. Sixteen Gy (34.7 Gy equivalent in 2 Gy fractions calculated by the linear quadratic model at α/β = 10: EQD2, α/β = 10, cumulative total was 101.9 Gy EQD10) to 100% of the target volume was irradiated with cumulative maximum skin dose of 70 Gy EQD2, α/β = 3 which was 98.7 Gy EQD2, α/β = 3 without spacer. No procedure related- or late complications and no local recurrence at the treated site were observed for three years until expiration. CONCLUSION: We consider that this procedure will provide an eradicative high-dose irradiation to IMLNM of breast cancer, preserving skin from overdose complications.
