Reproductive Isolating Mechanisms in the Bangladesh Coastal Bullfrog Hoplobatrachus litoralis and Its Congeneric Species Revealed by Crossing Experiments and Examination on Spermatogenesis of the Hybrids

To elucidate reproductive isolating mechanisms in the Bangladesh coastal bullfrog Hoplobatrachus litoralis and its congeneric species, we performed crossing experiments using three species： H. litoralis, H. tigerinus and H. rugulosus. In addition, we conducted histological observations on spermatogenesis of the hybrids. The reciprocal hybrids between H. litoralis and H. tigerinus developed normally with somewhat lower viability at the metamorphosis stage compared with the controls. Most of the metamorphosed frogs became mature. On the other hand, almost all hybrids between female H. rugulosus and male H. litoralis or H. tigerinus died of underdevelopment at the tadpole stage, and only a few hybrids metamorphosed normally and survived to maturity. The inner structures of the testes of the control H. litoralis and H. tigerinus were completely normal, with seminiferous tubules filled with compact bundles of normal spermatozoa. Those of the reciprocal hybrids between H. litoralis and H. tigerinus were almost normal or slightly abnormal, with seminiferous tubules that contained pycnotic nuclei in addition to normal bundles of normal spermatozoa, which demonstrates slight abnormalities in spermatogenesis. In contrast, the hybrids between female H. rugulosus and male H. litoralis or H. tigerinus had no bundles of spermatozoa nor spermatids in the seminiferous tubules, which indicates entirely abnormal spermatogenesis. Meiotic chromosome figures in the reciprocal hybrids between H. litoralis and H. tigerinus showed slight abnormalities, with the occurrence of univalents and increase of rod-shaped bivalents. These results indicate that H. litoralis and H. tigerinus are not isolated from each other by hybrid inviability nor by hybrid sterility, although the hybrids showed somewhat abnormal spermatogenesis in hybrids and that H. rugulosus is isolated from both H. litoralis and H. tigerinus by incomplete hybrid inviability and complete hybrid sterility.

＜正＞Hydrofluoroethers （HFEs） have recently been proposed as substitutes to conventional refrigerants including HFCs, since HFEs have zero ozone depletion potential and also smaller global warming potential. HFE245mc and HFE143m are such substitutes to replace CFC114 especially for heat recovery heat pump systems and HFC134a for refrigerating systems, *** the present study, experiments were made on boiling and condensation heat transfer for HFE245mc and HFE143m flowing inside horizontal smooth *** each new refrigerant, there was found no peculiar difference from conventional refrigerants in the characteristics of boiling and condensation heat transfer, as results of comparisons of measured local boiling and condensation heat transfer coefficients with respective correlations applicable to conventional refrigerants;the authors’ correlation for boiling and the Haraguchi et al’s correlation for *** the values calculated from the correlations, the heat transfer coefficient for HFE245mc showed to be higher than or equal to that ofCFC114 for boiling and condensation. Similarly, the heat transfer coefficient for HFE143m showed to be almost equal to that of HFC134a for boiling and condensation. From the standpoint of heat transfer, therefore, there was no problem in the use of HFE245mc and HFE143m as the alternative refrigerants to CFC114 and HFC134a, respectively.

Stability of pyrrolidone derivatives against γ-ray irradiation

To evaluate the stability of N-alkylated pyrrolidone derivatives （NRPs）, which are supposed to be used as precipitants for U（VI） and Pu（IV, VI） species in HNO3 media, under irradiation environment, some candidate NRPs were irradiated by γ-ray. Irradia- tion to HNO3 solutions up to 6 mol dm-3 （= M） containing 2 M N-n-butyl-2-pyrrolidone （NBP）, one of NRPs with lower hy- drophobicity, has revealed that the residual ratios of NBP in the samples of HNO3 up to 3 M decreased identically and linearly. Approximately 20% of NBP was found to be degraded after the irradiation at 1 MGy. It was also found that the decrease in the precipitation ratio of UOf＋（P.R., %） was gentle and that the P.R. values were relatively in accordance with the residual ratios of NBP. On the other hand, the degradation of the samples irradiated in 6 M HNO3 was found more distinguished. It was pro- posed from the analyses of degraded compounds that the degradation of NBP in HNO3 by γ-ray irradiation started from the cleavage of the pyrrolidone ring by the addition of oxygen atom originating from HNO3, followed by the formation of chain compounds by the successive addition of oxygen, leading to the generation of oxalic acid and acetic acid. The stability of other NRPs in 3 M HNO3 was evaluated to be nearly identical with that of NBP except lower P.R. values of the samples containing NRPs with higher hydrophobicity irradiated at more than 0.5 MGy.

Although the Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology （JSOG） endorses new-type PGD using CGH for only carriers of balanced chromosomal translocations, it is against the ethical guidelines of the JSOG to decide whether or not embryos should be implanted due to aneuploidy discovered as a result of new-type PGD. In the author＇s opinion, it should be at the discretion of the JSOG＇s own randomized controlled trials, which should involve multiple facilities, whether or not a scientific basis can be found for the value of the new-type PGD in cases of recurrent miscarriage, in cases of implantation failure, and in cases where the women are of advanced maternal age. Dr. Netsu＇s 36 cases of selective reduction may be against the Japanese Maternal Health Protection Law that prohibits abortion due to congenital disease, but with the backdrop that there are many abortions that are performed as a result of parental convenience in Japan, it is difficult to understand the difference between the over 300,000 abortions that are performed every year in Japan and Dr. Netsu＇s prescribed surgery which is designed to selectively reduce fetuses with congenital disease for the purpose of evading physical danger for women with multiple gestations.

Comparison of corneal biomechanical properties in normal tension glaucoma patients with different visual field progression speed

AIM：To compare the corneal biomechanical properties difference by ocular response analyzer（ORA） in normal tension glaucoma（NTG） patients with different visual field（VF） progression speed. METHODS：NTG patients with well-controlled Goldmann applanation tonometer（GAT） who routinely consulted Kitasato University Hospital Glaucoma Department between January 2010 and February 2014 were *** and ORA parameters including corneal compensated intraocular pressure（lOPcc）,Goldmann estimated intraocular pressure（lOPg）,corneal hysteresis（CH）,corneal resistance factor（CRF） were *** was tested by Swedish interactive threshold algorithm（SITA）-standard 30-2 *** patients underwent VF measurement regularly and GAT did not exceed 15 mm Hg at any time during the 3y follow *** were divided into four groups according to VF change over 3y,and ORA findings were compared between the upper 25th percentile group（slow progression group） and the lower 25th percentile group（rapid progression group）.RESULTS：Eighty-two eyes of 56 patients were *** were 21 eyes（21 patients） each in rapid and slow progression groups ***,lOPcc,lOPg,CH,CRF were 12.1＋1.4 mm Hg,15.8±1.8 mm Hg,12.8±2.0 mm Hg,8.4±1.1 mm Hg,7.9±1.3 mm Hg respectively in rapid progression group and 11.5±1.3 mm Hg,13.5±2.1 mm Hg,11.2±1.6 mm Hg,9.3±1.1 mm Hg,8.2±0.9 mm Hg respectively in slow progression group（P=0.214,〈0.001,0.007,0.017,0.413,respectively）.In bivariate correlation analysis,lOPcc,lOPcc-GAT and CH were significant correlated with m△MD（r =-0.292,-0.312,0.228 respectively,P =0.008,0.004,0.039 respectively）.CONCLUSION：Relatively rapid VF progression occurred in NTG patients whose lOPcc are rather high,CH are rather low and the difference between lOPcc and GAT are relatively *** lOPcc and lower CH are associated with VF progression in NTG *** study suggests that GAT measures might underestimate the IOP in such patients.

Fast Stereo Matching Fully Utilizing Super-Pixels

In this paper, we propose a depth image generation method by stereo matching on super-pixel (SP) basis. In the proposed method, block matching is performed only at the center of the SP, and the obtained disparity is applied to all pixels of the SP. Next, in order to improve the disparity, a new SP-based cost filter is introduced. This filter multiplies the matching cost of the surrounding SP by a weight based on reliability and similarity and sums the weighted costs of neighbors. In addition, we propose two new error checking methods. One-way check uses only a unidirectional disparity estimation with a small amount of calculation to detect errors. Cross recovery uses cross checking and error recovery to repair lacks of objects that are problematic with SP-based matching. As a result of the experiment, the execution time of the proposed method using the one-way check was about 1/100 of the full search, and the accuracy was almost equivalent. The accuracy using cross recovery exceeded the full search, and the execution time was about 1/60. Speeding up while maintaining accuracy increases the application range of depth images.

Local Altruism as an Environmental Ethic in CO<sub>2</sub>Emissions Control

When considering emissions control problems associated with carbon dioxide (CO2), social planning over quite a long-term horizon is usually considered to be necessary because it takes much time for the full absorption of CO2 by oceans and forests. Sometimes the required time horizon even becomes infinite. Such a fact seems to impose patience beyond the limits of human cognition. However, this study proves that the first-best emissions scenario can be achieved only by local altruism, which is dubbed parentage. Parentage is defined as the action of applying zero social discount rate to its subsequent generation, and discounting the utility of generations thereafter infinitely. In this sense, the nearly first-best emissions scenario is feasible within the ordinal cognition and benevolence of human beings. This paper also examines the definition of egalitarian sustainability, in which the utility of every generation must be kept constant, and reveals that such a definition of sustainability possibly provokes the inefficient intergenerational allocation of CO2. This is because the vested interest of the predecessors is put much importance in the process of the planning. It is required more rigid sustainability concept, in which the utility of each generation is no less decreasing through time and at least strictly increasing locally, to achieve the efficient allocation of CO2. One will find that the intergenerational allocation by the local altruism satisfies this property.

Effects of denosumab treatment in chronic liver disease patients with osteoporosis

BACKGROUND Effective treatment of osteoporosis is essential for improving morbidity and health-related quality of life in chronic liver disease(CLD)*** has been shown to increase bone mineral density(BMD)and decrease the risk of osteoporotic fracture in the general ***,there are few reports evaluating the efficacy of denosumab in CLD *** To investigated the effects and safety of denosumab in CLD patients with *** Sixty CLD patients with osteoporosis were subcutaneously administered denosumab once every 6 *** study period for evaluating efficacy and safety was 12 *** from baseline in BMD at the lumbar spine,femoral neck,and total hip were evaluated at 12 mo of denosumab *** turnover and quality were assessed by measuring serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b(bone resorption marker),serum total procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide(bone formation maker),and plasma pentosidine(bone quality marker).RESULTS Among the 405 CLD patients,138(34.1%)patients were diagnosed with osteoporosis;among these,78 patients met the exclusion criteria and thus 60 patients were finally included in the present *** median percentage changes from baseline to 12 mo of denosumab treatment in BMD at the lumbar spine,femoral neck,and total hip were+4.44%,+3.71%,and+4.03%,*** significantly improved BMD,regardless of sex,patient age,and presence of liver *** tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase-5b and procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide levels constantly and significantly declined after denosumab treatment(P<0.001).Plasma pentosidine levels were also significantly lower at 12 mo of treatment(P=0.010).No patients experienced fractures and moderate-to-severe adverse events,except for transient *** Denosumab treatment was safe and increased BMD,suppressed bone turnover,and improved bone quality marker levels in CLD patients with osteoporosis,irrespective
