Hyperglycemia is a significant prognostic factor of hepatocellular carcinoma after curative therapy

AIM:To evaluate whether metabolic factors are related to distant recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and survival after curative ***:This retrospective study included 344 patients whose HCC was treated curatively by radiofrequency ablation(RFA) *** mean age was 67.6 years and the mean observation period was 4.04 *** etiological background of liver disease was hepatitis B virus infection in 30,hepatitis C virus infection in 278,excessive alcohol drinking in 9,and other in 27 *** Child-Pugh classification grade was A(n = 307) or B(n = 37).The number of HCC nodules was one in 260,two in 61,and three in 23 *** surveillance of HCC recurrence after curative therapy with RFA,patients were radiologically evaluated every 3 *** associated with distant recurrence of HCC or survival were ***:Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose in diabetic patients was associated with higher incidence of distant *** 1-,2-,and 3-year recurrence rates were significantly higher in diabetic patients with inadequate maintenance of blood glucose compared with the others:50.6% vs 26.8%,83.5% vs 54.4%,and 93.8% vs 73.0%,respectively(P = 0.0001).Inadequate maintenance of blood glucose was an independent predictor of distant recurrence [adjusted relative risk 1.97(95%CI,1.33-2.91),(P = 0.0007)] after adjustment for other risk factors,such as number of HCC nodules [2.03(95%CI,1.51-2.73),P < 0.0001] and initial level of serum alpha fetoprotein(AFP) [1.43(95%CI,1.04-1.97),P = 0.028].Obesity was not an independent predictor of *** incidence of distant recurrence did not differ between diabetic patients with adequate maintenance of blood glucose and non-diabetic *** 232 patients who had HCC recurrence,138 had a second *** 1-,2-,and 3-year rates of second recurrence were significantly higher in diabetic patients with inadequate maintenance of blood glucose than in the others:9.0% vs 5.9%,53.1

Distinctive magnetic resonance imaging findings of hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatitis C virus eradication with direct-acting antivirals

Aim:The aim of the present study was to evaluate the characteristics of the magnetic resonance imaging features of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)that developed early after the eradication of hepatitis C virus(HCV)by direct-acting antiviral(DAA)***:This study included 26 patients who achieved sustained viral response with DAA and developed HCC thereafter within one year(DAA-SVR HCC).The radiologic characteristics of these patients were evaluated by contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging,including diffusion-weighted imaging(DWI)and T2-weighted imaging(T2WI).For comparison,80 HCC patients with positive HCV RNA(HCV-positive HCC)were *** 42 patients where tumor biopsy was available,histological grade and radiologic findings were ***:The rates of high intensity on DWI and T2WI were significantly higher in DAA-SVR HCC compared to HCV-positive HCC(DWI:100%vs.67.5%,P<0.001T2WI:92.6%vs.67.5%,P=0.01).HCC with high intensity on DWI or T2WI was more likely to have moderately or poorly differentiated HCC compared to well-differentiated HCC(DWI:69.7%vs.30.3%,P=0.02;T2WI:66.7%vs.27.3%,P=0.03).Conclusion:High intensity on DWI and hyperintensity on T2WI were distinctive features of HCC that developed within one year after the end of DAA treatment.

AIM:To study how lymph node metastasis(LNM) risk is stratified in undifferentiated-type early gastric cancer(undiff-EGC) dependent on combinations of risk ***:Five hundred and sixty-seven cases with undiff-EGC undergoing gastrectomy with lymphadenectomy were examined *** clinicopathological factors of patient age,location,size,an endoscopic macroscopic tumor form,ulceration,depth,histology,lymphatic involvement(LI) and venous involvement(VI),LNM risk was examined and stratified by conventional statistical analysis and datamining ***:LNM was positive in 44 of 567 cases(7.8%).Univariate analysis revealed > 2 cm,protrusion,submucosal(sm),mixed type,LI and VI as significant prognostic factors and > 2 cm and LI-positive were independent factors by multivariate *** preoperatively evaluable factors excluding LVI,sm and > 2 cm were independent *** to the depth and size,cases were categorized into the low-risk group [m and ≤ 2 cm,0%(LNM incidence)],the moderaterisk group(m and > 2 cm,5.6%; and sm and ≤ 2 cm,6.0%),and the high-risk group(sm and > 2 cm,19.3%).On the other hand,LNM occurred in 1.4% in all LI-negative cases,greatly lower than 28.2% in all LI-positive cases,and LNM incidence was low in LInegative cases even in the moderate- and high-risk ***:LNM-related factors in undiff-EGC were depth and size preoperatively while those were LI and size *** these factors,LI was the most significantly correlated factor.

Effect of current density on the morphology of Zn electrodeposits

The effect of current density on the morphology of Zn electrodepositsprepared by a flow-channel cell was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was foundthat the morphology of Zn electrodeposits evolves from thin-layered hexagonal eta -phase crystalsto pyramidal eta -phase particles with increasing the current density. The morphological evolutionat various flow rates was also examined and the results show that the morphological evolution at alower flow rate is more remarkable than that at a higher flow rate with increasing the currentdensity. To reveal the mechanism of the morphological evolution in detail, the atomic configurationon both (0001)_eta and {1100 }_eta planes under different current densities was investigated, it wasnoted that a specify current density could provide a good condition for the layered epitaxialgrowth of hexagonal T)-phase.

Evolution of zinc morphology during continuous electrodeposition

The morphology evolution of zinc continuous electrodeposits with nano-sized crystals on the ferrite substrate has been studied by in-situ scanning tunnel spectroscopy (STM). It is found that the morphology of zinc electrodeposits varies from initial granules with a size of about 30nm to layered platelets with increasing deposition time. Meanwhile, the crystal structure of the zinc electrodeposits is identified to be hexagonal η-phase by X-ray diffraction. The orientation relationship between zinc crystals and the substrate surface can be interpreted in terms of the misfit and the atomic correspondence of the interphase boundary between the η-phase deposits and α-Fe substrate.

Inelastic constitutive equation of plasma-sprayed ceramic thermal barrier coatings

Ceramic thermal barrier coatings （TBCs） are a very important technology for protecting the hot parts of gas turbines （GTs） from a high-temperature environment. The coating stress generated in the operation of GTs brings cracking and peeling damage to the TBCs. Thus, it is necessary to evaluate precisely such coating stress in a TBC system. We have obtained a stress-strain curve for a freestanding ceramic coat specimen peeled from a TBC coated substrate by conducting the bending test. The test results have revealed that the ceramic coating deforms nonlinearly with the applied loading. In this study, an inelastic constitutive equation for the ceramic thermal barrier coatings deposited by APS is developed. The obtained results are as follows：（1） the micromechanics-based constitutive equation was formulated with micro crack density formed at splat boundary, and （2） it was shown that the numerical results for a nonlinearly deformed beam simulated by the developed constitutive equation agreed with the experimental results obtained by cantilever bending tests.

Topographical and hydrological effects on meso-scale vegetation in desert steppe, Mongolia

This study investigated the seasonal variations of the normalized difference vegetation index（NDVI） and its relationships with climatic variables and topography in a small-scale（20 km×20 km） area（i.e., Tsogt-Ovoo village） within the desert steppe zone of Mongolia using in-situ observed climate data and satellite remote sensing data. We found that the topography is very important for vegetation growth in the desert steppe although the summer precipitation is the constraining factor. The unexpectedly high NDVI（up to 0.56）, as well as the high aboveground biomass, in the valley bottom was primarily resulted from the topography-modulated redistribution of overland flow after relatively heavy precipitation events during the growing season. This makes the valley bottoms in desert steppes not only reliable feeding resources for livestock but also heavens for wild lives. But, the detected large standard deviation of annual maximum NDVI（NDVI_（max）） from 2000 to 2013 in the valley bottom in response to rather variable precipitation implies that the valley bottoms under desert steppe climates are more vulnerable to climatic change.

By revisiting the three stage theory for the progress of science proposed by Taketani in 1942, the footmarks of fluidization research are examined. The bubbling and fast fluidization issues were emphasized so that the future offluidization research can be discussed among scientists and engineers in a wider perspective. The first cycle of fluidization research was started in the early 1940s by an initial stage of phenomenology. The second stage of structural studies was kicked off in the early 1950s with the introduction of the two phase theory. The third stage of essential studies occurred in the early 1960s in the form of bubble hydrodynamics. The second cycle, which confirmed the aforementioned three stages closed at the turn of the century, established a general understanding of suspension structures including agglomerating fluidization, bubbling, turbulent and fast fluidizations and pneumatic transport; also established powerful measurement and numerical simulation *** a general remark on science, technology and society issues the interactions between fluidization technology and science are revisited. Our future directions are discussed including the tasks in the third cycle, particularly in its phenomenology stage where strong motivation and intention are always necessary, in relation also to the green reforming of the present technology. A generalized definition of ＇fluidization＇ is proposed to extend fluidization principle into much wider scientific fields, which would be effective also for wider collaborations.

Recent standardization of treatment strategy for pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors

Recent advances in localization techniques,such as the selective arterial secretagogue injection test(SASI test) and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy have promoted curative resection surgery for patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(PNET).For patients with sporadic functioning PNET,curative resection surgery has been established by localization with the SASI test using secretin or *** curative resection of functioning PNET associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1(MEN 1) which are usually multiple and sometimes numerous,resection surgery of the pancreas and/or the duodenum has to be performed based on localization by the SASI *** resection surgery of PNET has increased,several important pathological features of PNET have been *** example,in patients with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome(ZES),duodenal gastrinoma has been detected more frequently than pancreatic gastrinoma,and in patients with MEN 1 and ZES,gastrinomas have been located mostly in the duodenum,and pancreatic gastrinoma has been found to co-exist in 13% of *** PNET in patients with MEN 1 becomes metastatic to the liver when it is more than 1 cm in diameter and should be resected after careful *** most important prognos-tic factor in patients with PNET is the development of hepatic *** treatment strategy for hepatic metastases of PNET has not been established and aggressive resection with chemotherapy and trans-arterial chemoembolization have been performed with significant *** usefulness of octreotide treatment and other molecular targeting agents are currently being assessed.

Increasing spatial coverage in rough terrain and vegetated areas using InSAR optimized pixel selection:application to Tohoku,Japan

One of the major limitations of using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar(InSAR)in time series analysis is the low-phase coherence associated with rough terrain and vegetated areas,which results in limited spatial coverage in such *** scatterers technique was introduced to overcome this limitation using time-series ***,identifying major scatterers within a pixel requires the single-looked pixels oversampling which can be a demanding process especially with large interferometric stacks and vast study ***,using multilooked temporal coherent pixels was proposed to increase processing efficiency and coverage by utilizing distributed targets,but this technique may exclude pixels with reliable phase returns because of their temporal varying neighboring *** this paper,we propose a technique to identify multilooked temporal stable pixels with reliable phase returns independent of their neighboring *** conduct a simulation analysis to relate the spatial coherence of a pixel with its expected temporal correlation in the time series analysis *** found that a liberal temporal correlation threshold of 0.53 in multilooked pixels stack is equivalent to a spatial coherence threshold of 0.2 when using number of looks of 9,which is considered acceptable in temporal coherent pixels,in terms of phase standard *** these findings to study the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in the northeastern part of Japan resulted in increasing the number of usable pixels and spatial coverage index by nearly 50.4%and 36.8%,respectively,compared to the temporal coherent ***,we propose an approach to integrate GPS observations with InSAR time series analysis,which resulted in deformation maps of the megathrust 2011 Tohoku earthquake with mean RMSE of 11.4 mm and a correlation of 98%in comparison to GPS observations.
