Since the efficiency of treatment of thyroid disorder depends on the risk of malignancy, indeterminate follicular neoplasm (FN) images should be classified. The diagnosis process has been done by visual interpretation of experienced pathologists. However, it is difficult to separate the favor benign from borderline types. Thus, this paper presents a classification approach based on 3D nuclei model to classify favor benign and borderline types of follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA) in cytological specimens. The proposed method utilized 3D gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and random forest classifier. It was applied to 22 data sets of FN images. Furthermore, the use of 3D GLCM was compared with 2D GLCM to evaluate the classification results. From experimental results, the proposed system achieved 95.45% of the classification. The use of 3D GLCM was better than 2D GLCM according to the accuracy of classification. Consequently, the proposed method probably helps a pathologist as a prescreening tool.

An Efficient Liver-Segmentation System Based on a Level-Set Method and Consequent Processes

This paper presents an efficient liver-segmentation system developed by combining three ideas under the operations of a level-set method and consequent processes. First, an effective initial process creates mask and seed regions. The mask regions assist in prevention of leakage regions due to an overlap of gray-intensities between liver and another soft-tissue around ribs and verte-brae. The seed regions are allocated inside the liver to measure statistical values of its gray-intensities. Second, we introduce liver-corrective images to represent statistical regions of the liver and preserve edge information. These images help a geodesic active contour (GAC) to move without obstruction from high level of image noises. Lastly, the computation time in a level-set based on reaction-diffusion evolution and the GAC method is reduced by using a concept of multi-resolution. We applied the proposed system to 40 sets of 3D CT-liver data, which were acquired from four patients (10 different sets per patient) by a 4D-CT imaging system. The segmentation results showed 86.38% ± 4.26% (DSC: 91.38% ± 2.99%) of similarities to outlines of manual delineation provided by a radiologist. Meanwhile, the results of liver segmentation only using edge images presented 79.17% ± 5.15% or statistical regions showed 74.04% ± 9.77% of similarities.

The pectoralis major musculocutaneous (PMMC) flap has been a useful technique for head and neck reconstruction since its first description by Ariyan in 1979. However, techniques in microvascular surgery have since evolved and recently free tissue transfer has played an important role in head and neck reconstruction. Although we use free flaps as the first choice for head and neck reconstruction, similar to many other institutions, some patients at our hospital have undergone reconstruction with PMMC flaps. We retrospectively analyzed the indications and outcomes of this reconstructive technique from our experience with 12 patients. The medical records of all patients who underwent PMMC flaps at Hokkaido Cancer Center from 2001 to 2010 were reviewed. Data concerning diagnosis, main indication, site of reconstruction, previous treatment, and postoperative complications were analyzed. Of the 12 PMMC flap surgeries performed, 3 were carried out as primary reconstructive procedures, whereas 9 were done as “salvage” procedures. Flap-related complications were observed in 6 cases. Partial flap loss developed in 4 patients, although there were no cases of total flap loss. There were 3 recurrent fistulae following reconstruction with PMMC flaps. The preoperative goals of performing PMMC flap surgery were met in 83% of our cases. The authors conclude that while free flap transfer is usually the first choice for head and neck reconstruction, PMMC flaps can produce acceptable results in certain situations.

Automated Dynamic Cellular Analysis in Time-Lapse Microscopy

Analysis of cellular behavior is significant for studying cell cycle and detecting anti-cancer drugs. It is a very difficult task for image processing to isolate individual cells in confocal microscopic images of non-stained live cell cultures. Because these images do not have adequate textural variations. Manual cell segmentation requires massive labor and is a time consuming process. This paper describes an automated cell segmentation method for localizing the cells of Chinese hamster ovary cell culture. Several kinds of high-dimensional feature descriptors, K-means clustering method and Chan-Vese model-based level set are used to extract the cellular regions. The region extracted are used to classify phases in cell cycle. The segmentation results were experimentally assessed. As a result, the proposed method proved to be significant for cell isolation. In the evaluation experiments, we constructed a database of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cell’s microscopic images which includes various photographing environments under the guidance of a biologist.

Segmentation of Sinusoids in Hematoxylin and Eosin Stained Liver Specimens Using an Orientation-Selective Filter

The liver comprises cell layers of hepatocytes called trabeculae, which are separated by vascular sinusoids. Under- standing the structure of hepatic trabeculae and liver sinusoids in hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained liver specimens is important for the differential diagnosis of liver diseases. In this study, we develop an approach to extracting liver sinusoids from HE-stained images. The proposed approach involves: 1) a new orientation-selective filter (OS filter) for edge enhancement and image denoising, 2) the clustering of image pixels to identify candidate sinusoids, and 3) a classification procedure that discards unlikely candidates and selects the final sinusoid areas. Experimental studies using a database of 16 images with a resolution of 512 × 512 pixels showed that the proposed approach could segment liver sinusoid pixels with 81% of specificity and 94% of sensitivity. A comparison with a method based on bilateral filters showed that this method improved the sensitivity for all images with an average improvement of 4% and no difference in specificity. The results were presented to a group of pathologists and they confirmed that the images were highly representative of the tissue morphology features.

Meso\| and microstructural characteristics of cataclastic fault rocks developed in the Xialu chert are described. The Xialu chert represents pelagic and deep marine sediments (Middle Jurassic—Lower Cretaceous), and occupies the southern marginal part of the E—W trending Yarlung Zangbo suture zone. The apparent total thickness of siliceous deposits exceeds 1km. The current study is concentrated along the two measured sections, Xialu\|E and Xialu\|W. The Xialu\|E section is composed mainly of red chert associated with reddish purple siliceous mudstone and greenish gray mudstone. The beds steeply dip north or south. The 45m section studied is divided into three units (chert unit, chert\|siliceous mudstone unit, and melange unit from north to south). They are in fault contact with each other. In the southern half of the chert unit and the northernmost of the chert\|siliceous mudstone unit, a 15m thick cohesive cataclasite zone can be defined. The cataclasites are composed of chert fragments in a fine grained matrix, and deformed with jigsaw puzzle structures. The chert\|siliceous mudstone unit is made up of four slabs of chert\|siliceous mudstone sequence. Mesoscopic duplex zones in thickness from 1 to 3m are recognized at slab boundaries. Flat and ramp structure and associated P foliations, R1 shears, Y surfaces are developed. Shear spacing range from 1 to 10cm. The slip senses are dextral strike\|slip movement along these duplex zones. The cataclasite zone is cut by the duplex zone along the southern boundary.

A new method for constructing quadratic spline to interpolate a given sat of data points ispresented. The constructed spline preserves the shape of the given data points such as monotonicityand convexity , and is visually pleasing. Numerical experiments are included which compare the ″visu-ally pleasing″ and the approximation accuracy of the new method with other two methods.

The Ceno\|Tethys is a southern branch of the Tethyan ocean and existed in the Mesozoic and early Cenozoic times. The evolution of the Ceno\|Tethys has been discussed based mainly on geological and paleontological data obtained from shallow marine sediments on the both sides of the ocean. Pelagic sediments deposited in a deep ocean basin of the Ceno\|Tethys are often incorporated in suture zones. However, geological and paleontological data from the pelagic sediments, which enable us to elucidate the paleoceanography and tectonic evolution of the Ceno\|Tethys, are still limited. The Xialu chert crops out about 30 km south of Xigaze and occupies the southern marginal part of the E—W trending Yarlung Zangbo Suture zone. As a result of radiolarian biostratigraphic research along two continuous sections, we identified seven different aged radiolarian assemblages from pelagic and hemipelagic sediments ranging early Middle Jurassic (Aalenian) to Early Cretaceous. The Aalenian radiolarian fauna is the oldest known record so far for the Xialu chert. It is noteworthy to point out that the fauna came from a chert sample which contains no terrigenous elements other than clay minerals. There is a possibility that radiolarian faunas older than Aalenian age will be discovered from the Xialu chert in the future.
