Local convergence zones or discontinuous lines in the Taklimakan Desert, Northwest China

In order to study convergence zones or discontinuous lines formed locally in the Taklimakan Desert,we analyzed available MODIS images onboad TERRA or AQUA satellite for ten cases:29 March 2002,14 April 2002;2 January 2003;21 April 2003;26 March 2004;28 April 2004;30 January 2005;25 June 2005;3 December 2005;and 26 July *** used weather maps published by the Japan Mete-orological Agency for the Asia and Pacific region at 500 hPa,700 hPa and 850 hPa,at 00Z and 12Z to analyze the meteorological conditions occurring in each *** estimated the positions of air streams,convergence zones or discontinuous lines between them,and thermal conditions on the maps and con-firmed the presence of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds through satellite images in *** a review of previous studies,this paper introduced the results of the present *** warm areas in the Taklimakan Desert and on the Tibetan Plateau and local convergence zones or discontinuous lines in the Taklimakan Desert were discussed together with their diurnal changes,using composite maps of the ten *** the long axis of the desert the convergence zones or discontinuous lines normally extend 70-80 km in a west-east direction,but are suspected to exceed 100 km in extreme *** the other hand,the convergence zones or discontinuous lines extending in a north-south direction on the southern fringe of the desert have a length of 40-60 *** closed warm areas show clear diurnal changes,but they were not detected at the 500 hPa *** example of a clear convergence zone running in a north-south direction on 26 July 2006 was presented in detail with corresponding satellite images.

Climatology of yellow sand (Asian sand, Asian dust or Kosa) in East Asia

In order to study climatology of yellow sand (Asian sand, Asian dust or Kosa) in EastAsia, secular fluctuation in China, Korea and Japan in the recent 30 years was presented. Thenumber of days with sand-dust storm at five stations in China-Hotan, Zhangye, Minqin, Jurhand Beijing, decreases a lot at the former three stations, but changed little at the latter two *** that the recent global warming is more evident in Xinjiang and Gansu, where the fre-quency of cold air invasions from the higher latitudes is decreasing. But, the eastern parts ofMongolia, inner Mongolia, and North China encounter stronger cyclones in early spring as a resultof global warming. These cyclones bring cold air from higher latitudes, causing severe duststorms. Secular variation in the annual days with sand-dust storms in China and Kosa days in Ko-rea and Japan show a parallel change with higher frequency from 1975 to 1985. This may be re-lated to the higher frequency of La Nina years. However, different tendency was shown in theperiod from 1986 to 1996. Since 1996 or 1997, a sharp increase is clear, which may be caused bythe developed cyclones in East Asia as well as human activities, and stronger land degradationunder La Nina conditions. Anomalies of the total number of stations with Kosa days were dis-cussed in accordance with some synoptic meteorological conditions such as the differences be-tween Siberian anticyclone and Aleutian cyclone center at 500 hPa level during the previous winter.

LONG-RANGE CHANGES OF CORRELATION BETWEEN THE TYPHOON FREQUENCIES IN SEVEN REGIONS IN EAST ASIA AND SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE IN THE NORTH PACIFIC

The correlation coefficients between the typhoon frequencies for the seven regions in East Asia (i. e. Xisha, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Shanghai, Naha, Kagoshima and Nagoya) and the monthly-mean sea surface temperature (SST) from 2 years before to 1 year after are calculated, indicating that the most significant correlation appears in the period from the summer of 2 years before to the summer of 1 year before. During this period negative correlations are located in the northwestern part of the North Pacific while the positive ones located in the southeastern part. It is found that the positive correlations change into the negative ones in Equatorial East Pacific in the same year (simultaneous correlation). The high-level correlation region in 1 year after is found in the area of Alaska Current. It is also suggested that there are interannual variations of about 1,1.5 and 2 years for the changes of the correlation intensity.

CHARACTERISTICS ON INTERANNUAL VARIATIONS OF NORTH PACIFIC SST AND ITS RELATION TO EAST ASIA CLIMATE

The interannual variations of the monthly sea surface temperature (SST) in the North Pacific (including Equatorial East Pacific) during 1951-1980 are analysed by means of EOF method. The findings are:(1) In the cold and warm ocean current areas, such as the North Pacific Current, the California Current and the Equatorial East Pacific areas, the convergence speeds are the fastest, while in the Kuroshio and the western part of the North Equatorial Current areas they are fast only in winter.(2) The physical features of the first 3 eigenvectors are obvious. The first eigenvector shows that the SST values are high in the south and low in the north in the latitudinal distribution of the SST field. The warm current area, i.e. the northwestern part of the North Pacific is positive and the cold current area, i.e. the southeastern part of the North Pacific including the Eastern Equatorial Pacific is negative. Impact of lipoprotein lipase gene polymorphisms on ulcerative colitis

AIM： To examine the influence of lipoprotein lipase （LPL） gene polymorphism in ulcerative colitis （UC） patients.METHODS： Peripheral blood was obtained from 131 patients with UC and 106 healthy controls for DNA extraction. We determined LPL gene polymorphisms affecting the enzyme at Ser447stop, as well as Hind Ⅲ and Pvu Ⅱ polymorphisms using PCR techniques. PCR products were characterized by PCR-RFLP and direct sequencing. Polymorphisms were examined for association with clinical features in UC patients. Genotype frequencies for LPL polymorphisms were also compared between UC patients and controls.RESULTS： In patients with onset at age 20 years or younger, C/G and G/G genotypes for Ser447stop polymorphism were more prevalent than C/C genotype （OR = 3.13, 95% CI = 0.95-10.33）. Patients with H^＋/- or H^-/- genotype for Hind Ⅲ polymorphism also were more nu merous than those with H^＋/＋ genotype （OR = 2.51, 95% CI = 0.85-7.45）. In the group with H^＋/＋ genotype for Hind Ⅲ polymorphism, more patients had serum triglyceride concentrations over 150 mg/dL than patients with H^＋/- or H^- genotype （P 〈 0.01, OR = 6.46, 95% CI = 1.39-30.12）. Hypertriglycemia was also more prevalent in patients with P^＋/＋ genotypes for Pvu Ⅱ polymorphism （P 〈 0.05, OR = 3.0, 95% CI = 1.06-8.50）. Genotype frequency for LPL polymorphism did not differ significantly between UC patients and controls.
