The first social experiment program in Japan to reduce domestic wastewater pollutant discharge by ＂soft interventions＂ in households has been conducted in the Yamato-gawa River drainage area since 2005. The Yamato-gawa River has been listed as one of the worst water quality rivers in Japan because of the larger annual average BOD. ＂Hard interventions＂ including deployment of wastewater treatment facilities and artificial installation of natural purification facilities in the river has been conducted in these years to improve river water quality. At the first Yamato-gawa River social experiment program （YR-SEP） in March 2005, BOD at the monitoring point near the river mouth decreased about 6% during the Program. Natural purification effect along the river was evaluated in this article with one-dimensional water quality model for the six river sections. Larger biological oxygen consumption rate, kb, was estimated in the sections with artificially installed natural purification facilities. The effect of ＂soft interventions＂ in households in the YR-SEP was estimated as 25% BOD decrease in the nearest monitoring point to the river mouth, when all the households participate in the Program and BOD discharge reduction rate with ＂soft interventions＂ in households was 40%.

Pneumoscrotum is uncommon and also rarely reported as a complication associated with colonic perforation. A case of colonic perforation in delayed fashion associated with EMR, revealed by pneumoscrotum, is reported and the associated literatures are reviewed. A 52-year-old male received piecemeal EMR for a laterally spreading tumor 35 mm in size in our hospital. He complained of enlargement of the scrotum and revisited our hospital the day alter the procedure. A diagnosis of pneumoscrotum was made, and as most such cases have been reported to be associated with pneumoperitoneum, colonic perforation was suspected. Free air but no fluid collection was found by abdominal computed tomography, and delayed colonic perforation was diagnosed. However, as there were no clinical signs of peritoneal irritation, conservative treatment was administered and the patient recovered uneventfully. Pneumoscrotum could be a sign of colonic perforation alter EMR, and treatment should be carefully chosen.

AIM To investigate the role of macrophage colony-stimulating factor(M-CSF) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) after surgery. METHODS Expression of M-CSF, distribution of M2 macrophages(Mφs), and angiogenesis were assessed in the liver, including tumors and peritumoral liver tissues. The prognostic power of these factors was assessed. Mouse isolated hepatic Mφs or monocytes were cultured with media containing M-CSF. The concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in media was assessed. Furthermore, the role of the M-CSF-matured hepatic Mφs on proliferation of the vascular endothelial cell(VEC) was investigated. RESULTS A strong correlation between the expressions of M-CSF and CD163 was observed in the peritumoral area. Also, groups with high density of M-CSF, CD163 or CD31 showed a significantly shorter time to recurrence(TTR) than low density groups. Multivariate analysis revealedthe expression of M-CSF or hepatic M2Mφs in the peritumoral area as the most crucial factor responsible for shorter TTR. Moreover, the expression of M-CSF and hepatic M2Mφs in the peritumoral area had better predictable power of overall survival. Values of VEGF in culture media were significantly greater in the hepatic Mφs compared with the monocytes. Proliferation of the VEC was greatest in the cells co-cultured with hepatic Mφs when M-CSF was present in *** M-CSF increases hepatocarcinogenesis, most likely by enhancing an angiogenic factor derived from hepatic Mφ and could be a useful target for therapy against HCC.

Polyarteritis nodosa clinically mimicking nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia

Here, we present the case of a 74-year-old Japanese man with segmental intestinal necrosis, which developed after treatment with pulsed methylprednisolone for mononeuritis multiplex. The patient was weakly positive for myeloperoxidase (MPO)-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA). Computed tomography and surgical findings were compatible with nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI). He underwent small intestinal resection by emergency surgery and an intestinal fistula was made. Pathologically, necrotizing vasculitis with fibrinoid necrosis was present in medium to small-sized arteries, which was equivalent to Arkin's classification Ⅱ-Ⅳ. Most of the arteries had fibrous intimal thickening, which was considered to obstruct the arteries and thus cause segmental intestinal necrosis. A diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) was made, and intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse therapy was added to the therapeutic regimen. This patient was successfully treated with these multidisciplinary therapies and his stoma was finally closed. This is a very rare and indicative case of PAN weakly positive for MPO-ANCA and clinically mimicking NOMI, which occurred even after treatment with pulsed methylprednisolone.

Effects of puddling on percolation and rice yields in rainfed lowland paddy cultivation: Case study in Khammouane province, central Laos

We investigated the effects of puddling on percolation and rice yields in rainfed lowland paddy cultivation. We selected a study village in Khammouane province, central Laos, and set up non-puddling and puddling plots from high to low positions. Even when puddling was conducted carefully, the ponding water in the plots disappeared in the case of little rainfall. Further, percolatifons during the later periods of rice growth increased drastically. Therefore, it is difficult to overcome drought stresses only by conducting puddling. We also compared the water conditions in the non-puddling and puddling plots. In the puddling plots at high position and low position along a stream, the number of days without ponding water in the puddling plots was less than that in the non-puddling field in July, suggesting the possibility of a different transplanting date. We tried to estimate the effects of transplanting date on the rice yields and found that transplanting 15 days earlier leads to an increase of 0.5 t/ha in the rice yields. Moreover, the profits from the increased yields exceed the puddling costs considerably, leading to a definite increase in income. Because the transplanting date has no effects in the fields with high ground water, puddling is effective in paddy fields where ponding does not occur to a significant degree.

The amount of waste heat in a space facility became larger, because of increase in the space platform size and its power consumption. It requires development of high-performance space thermal management systems handling a large amount of waste. Boiling two-phase flow could become powerful means for this system because a boiling and condensation system is one of the most efficient modes of heat transfer due to phase change （liquid-vapor）. However, gravity effects on boiling two-phase flow phenomena and the corresponding heat transfer characteristics are not clear. Therefore, we prepare the experiments of boiling two-phase flow utilizing a long-term microgravity environment onboard a Japanese Experimental Module ＂KIBO＂ in the International Space Station （ISS） as one of the JAXA official projects. In this paper, recent progress of the preparation for the project is reported.
