Recent studies have shown that base-isolated objects with long fundamental natural periods are highly influenced by long-period earthquakes. These long-period waves result in large displacements for isolators, possibly leading to exceedance of the allowable displacement limits. Conventional isolation systems, in general, fail to resist such large displacements. This has prompted the need to modify conventional base isolation systems. The current work focuses on the development of an external device, comprising a unit of negative and positive springs, for improving the performance of conventional base isolation systems. This unit accelerates the change in the stiffness of the isolation system where the stiffness of the positive spring varies linearly in terms of the displacement response of the isolated objects. The target objects of the present study are small structures such as computer servers, sensitive instruments and machinery. Numerical studies show that the increase in the damping of the system and the slope of the linear function is effective in reducing the displacement response. An optimal range of damping values and slope, satisfying the stability condition and the allowable limits of both displacement and acceleration responses when the system is subjected to near-fault and long-period ground motions simultaneously, is proposed.

Utilization of novel materials,particularly high-T_(c)(critical temperature)superconductors,is essential to pursue the United Nations’Sustainable Goals,as well as to meet the increasing worldwide demand for clean and carbon-free electric power *** magnets are beneficial in several real-life applications including transportation,energy production,magnetic resonance imaging(MRI),and drug delivery *** achieve high performance,one must develop uniform,large-grain,infiltration-growth(IG)processed bulk YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(y)(Y-123)*** this study,we report the magnetic and microstructural properties of a large-grain,top-seeded,IG-processed Y-123 pellet,which is 20 mm in diameter and 6 mm in height;the pellet is produced utilizing liquid Yb-123+Ba_(3)Cu_(5)O_(8) as the liquid *** the samples cut from the top of the bulk exhibit a sharp superconducting transition(approximately 1 K wide)with the onset T_(c) of approximately 90 ***,in the samples cut from the bottom surface,the onset T_(c) values slightly decreased to between 88 and 90 K,although still exhibiting a sharp superconducting *** top and bottom samples exhibited the highest remnant value of J_(c)(critical current density)at 77 K H//c-axis of 50 and 55 kA/cm^(2),*** remnant J_(c) and irreversibility field values significantly fluctuated,being fairly low in some bottom *** electron microscopy identified nanometer size Y-211(Y2BaCuO5)secondary-phase particles dispersed in the Y-123 ***-dispersive spectroscopy clarified that the decreased both T_(c) and J_(c) for the bottom samples were attributed to liquid phase dispersion within the Y-123 phase.

The collective Hamiltonian up to the fourth order for a multi-O(4) model is derived for the first time based on the self-consistent collective-coordinate(SCC) method,which is formulated in the framework of the time-dependent Hartree-Bogoliubov(TDHB) *** collective Hamiltonian is valid for the spherical case where the HB equilibrium point of the multi-O(4) model is spherical as well as for the deformed case where the HB equilibrium points are *** validity is tested numerically in both the spherical and deformed *** simulations indicate that the low-lying states of the collective Hamiltonian and the transition amplitudes among them mimic fairly well those obtained by exactly diagonalizing the Hamiltonian of the multi-O(4) *** numerical results for the deformed case imply that the "optimized RPA boundary condition" is also valid for the well-known η*,η expansion around the unstable HB point of the multi-O(4) *** these illuminate the power of the SCC method.

Horizontal impedance functions of inclined single piles are measured experimentally for model soil-pile systems with both the effects of local soil nonlinearity and resonant *** practical pile inclinations of 5掳 and 10掳 in addition to a vertical pile embedded in cohesionless soil and subjected to lateral harmonic pile head loadings for a wide range of frequencies are *** obtained with low-to-high amplitude of lateral loadings on model soil-pile systems encased in a laminar shear box show that the local nonlinearities have a profound impact on the horizontal impedance functions of *** impedance functions of inclined piles are found to be smaller than the vertical pile and the values decrease as the angle of pile inclination *** values of horizontal impedance functions are obtained for the ＇positive＇ and ＇negative＇ cycles of harmonic loadings,leading to asymmetric force-displacement relationships for the inclined *** of these experimental results is carried out through three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analyses,and the results from the numerical models are in good agreement with the experimental *** analyses conducted on the numerical models suggest that the consideration of local nonlinearity at the vicinity of the soil-pile interface influence the response of the soil-pile systems.

BACKGROUND Phosphoglyceride crystal deposition disease(PCDD)is a rare acquired disease in which phospholipid crystals deposit in bone and soft tissue long after surgery,trauma,or repeated *** SUMMARY A 60-year-old-woman was referred to our department because of multiple abdominal masses after open splenectomy for idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura 29 years *** the masses showed marked fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG)uptake on ^(18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography(^(18)F-FDGPET)and were strongly suspected to be malignant *** biopsies were performed,and the abdominal masses were found to be aligned vertically,three in a row,along the tissue layers cut in the patient’s previous *** finding of the specimens showed foreign body granuloma consisting of histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells accumulating around needle-like *** crystals were confirmed as phosphoglyceride by Raman spectroscopy,and PCDD was *** our knowledge,this is the first report of PCDD diagnosed by Raman *** We made a definitive diagnosis of PCDD in a patient with multiple tumors showing marked FDG uptake on ^(18)F-FDG-PET by incisional biopsy and composition analysis using Raman spectroscopy,a method that has not previously been reported for the diagnosis of PCDD.

A hydrogen bond-assisted α-selective glycosylation reaction by using 4,6-dibenzyloxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl(DBT) β-glycosyl donors was developed for the efficient construction of 1,2-cis-α-glycosidic bond in natural products. This method was applied successfully to the direct synthesis of complex oligosaccharidederived glycolipids with simple protecting chemistry. Mechanistic studies using the NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculation provide a proof of concept for hydrogen bond-assisted glycosylation reaction towardsα-specific construction of O-glycosidic linkage.

The mass of very small vehicles is often comparable to that of their drivers,and thus there is a greater degree of coupling between the vehicle and the driver,compared with a case for traditional *** developing small vehicles,it is necessary to give ample consideration to the dynamics of the person who ride ***,a model of a human body riding a small personal vehicle was constructed to investigate the dynamics of the person inside such a ***,an experiment on posture maintenance by acceleration of direction of travel was conducted and the parameters for posture control were identified using agenetic *** shows that body behavior could be successfully simulated using the proposed model,and the control parameters were effective in determining the posture maintenance characteristics of the vehicle occupant.

Loss of apico-basal polarity is one of the crucial factors that drives epithelial tumor progression, scribbleldiscs largellethal giant larvae （scrib/dlg/lgl）, a group of apico-basal polarity genes, were initially identified as members of ＂neoplastic＂ tumor-suppressors in flies. The components of the Hippo signaling pathway, which is crucial for organ size control and cancer development, were also identified through Drosophila genetic screens as members of ＂hyperplastic＂ tumor-suppressors. Accumulating evidence in recent studies implies that these two tumor-suppressor signaling pathways are not mutually exclusive but rather cooperatively act to give rise to highly malignant tumors. Recently, substantial attention has been paid to the strain sensitivity of the carbon nanotubes＇（CNTs＇） electronic properties. In this study, the relationships between the geometric structures and electronic states of zigzag CNTs under uniaxial compressive strain were investigated. We found that different factors dominate the electronic states of zigzag CNTs depending on the strain regions： the initial stage of the strain loading, which lasts until column-buckling deformation begins, and the strain regions corresponding to column- and shell-buckling deformations. Because shell-buckling deformation significantly increases the re-orbital angle, the angle between the π orbital axis vectors of adjacent atoms, strong localization of the density of states （LDOS） occurs in the buckled area. We also analyzed the current able to pass through deformed CNTs using a tight-binding-based Green＇s function approach and determined that the current can be significantly suppressed by applying uniaxial compressive strain. Our method of predicting the electronic state of a deformed CNT based on the π-orbital angle is expected to be useful for predicting the electronic properties of CNT-based electronic devices and sensors.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage by a ruptured cerebral aneurysmremains the most devastating cerebrovascular disorderswith high morbidity and mortality (Suzuki et al.,2017), which are mainly caused by early brain injury anddelayed cerebral ischemia. Despite many experimentaland clinical research efforts, the mechanisms of earlybrain injury as well as delayed cerebral ischemia remainunclarified. However, recent works have suggested thattenascin-C, which is a special type of secreted extracellularmatrix proteins, is promising as a novel therapeutictarget against post-subarachnoid hemorrhage early braininjury and delayed cerebral ischemia.
