Excellent firm bonding between the biomaterials and bone tissue (osseointegration and osteo-conductivity) has been desired for the stability in vivo of dental implants and artificial joints. Much has been learned about this concept, which has led to significant improvements in the design and surface modification of implants in the field of implant dentistry, orthopedic surgery. We have already reported that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) irradiation can accelerate the bone bonding ability of the bio-conductive materials such as bioactive titanium and hydroxyapatite implant. However, it is still unclear whether the LIPUS could have same effect to different types of the bioactive-materials. Therefore, in this study, the differences of bone-like hydroxyapatite formation on some kind of hydroxyapatite surface in simulated body fluid (SBF) under the LIPUS irradiation were investigated. Two kinds of hydroxyapatite samples immersed in SBF was exposed to ultrasound waves, the bone-like apatite on the surface was analyzed by Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. As a result, the enhancement of hydroxyapatite formation on the surface by LIPUS was confirmed, the initial epitaxial nucleation and crystal growth of apatite depended on crystal structure of the surface of matrix materials.

Dendritic cell-based vaccine for pancreatic cancer in Japan

"Vaccell" is a dendritic cell(DC)-based cancer vaccine which has been established in Japan. The DCs play central roles in deciding the direction of host immune reactions as well as antigen presentation. We have demonstrated that DCs treated with a streptococcal immune adjuvant OK-432, produce interleukin-12, induce Th1-dominant state, and elicit anti-tumor effects, more powerful than those treated with the known DCmaturating factors. We therefore decided to mature DCs by the OK-432 for making an effective DC vaccine, Vaccell. The 255 patients with inoperable pancreatic cancer who received standard chemotherapy combined with DC vaccines, were analyzed retrospectively. Survival time of the patients with positive delayed type hypersensitivity(DTH) skin reaction was significantly prolonged as compared with that of the patients with negative DTH. The findings strongly suggest that there may be "Responders" for the DC vaccine in advanced pancreatic cancer patients. We next conducted a smallscale prospective clinical study. In this trial, we pulsed HLA class Ⅱ-restricted WT1 peptide(WT1-Ⅱ) in addition to HLA class Ⅰ-restricted peptide(WT1-Ⅰ) into the DCs. Survival of the patients received WT1-Ⅰ and-Ⅱ pulsed DC vaccine was significantly extended as compared to that of the patients received DCs pulsed with WT1-Ⅰ or WT1-Ⅱ alone. Furthermore, WT1-specific DTH positive patients showed significantly improved the overall survival as well as progressionfree survival as compared to the DTH negative patients. The activation of antigen-specific immune responses by DC vaccine in combination with standard chemotherapy may be associated with a good clinical outcome in advanced pancreatic cancer. We are now planning a pivotal study of the Vaccell in appropriate protocols in Japan.

Improving grain quality is a primary objective in contemporary rice *** modern rice breeding has developed two different types of rice,eating and sake-brewing rice,with different grain characteristics,indicating the selection of variant gene alleles during the breeding *** the critical importance of promptly and efficiently identifying genes selected in past breeding for future molecular breeding,we conducted genome scans for divergence,genome-wide association studies,and map-based ***,we successfully identified two genes,OsMnS and OsWOX9D,both contributing to rice grain *** encodes a mannan synthase that increases the white core frequency in the endosperm,a desirable trait for sake brewing but decreases the grain appearance ***9D encodes a grass-specific homeobox-containing transcription factor,which enhances grain width for better sake ***,haplotype analysis revealed that their defective alleles were selected in East Asia,but not Europe,during modern *** addition,our analyses indicate that a reduction in grain mannan content during African rice domestication may also be caused a defective OsMnS allele due to breeding *** study not only reveals the delicate balance between grain appearance quality and nutrition in rice but also provides a new strategy for isolating causal genes underlying complex traits,based on the concept of“breeding-assisted genomics”in plants.

Atmospheric aerosol has a potential to change the global climate by the direct and indirect effects on the radiation balance in the planetary atmosphere. The direct effect is generally expected to be small in the polar regions, but the indirect effect may cause a large difference of cloud optical properties between the Arctic and Antarctic regions. National Institute of Polar Research promotes the atmospheric research in both polar regions, and employs remote-sensing instruments for aerosol and cloud studies. For investigating the columnar aerosol optical properties, sky-radiometry based on a radiation inversion algorithm is powerful to retrieve the aerosol volume size distribution, single scattering albedo and complex refractive index as well as aerosol optical thickness and Angstrom exponent. In order for long-term monitoring of the aerosol properties, we are operating a Prede POM-02 skyradiometer at Syowa Station （69.0N, 39.6E） in Antarctica. Also we recently developed a new skyradiometer POM-01 MK III for ship-based measurements. In this paper, we will show preliminary results from surface-based and ship-based skyradiometer measurements during winter-over research activities at Syowa Station and the Antarctic cruises by Icebreaking R/V Shirase of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions.

＜正＞Ship waves in shallow water are greatly different from those in deep water. In the present paper, the numerical method of ship waves by Tanimoto et al. was applied to open sea with a constant water depth and a coast with straight, parallel depth contours in order to investigate characteristics of propagation and transformation of ship waves. The ship length is 82m, the breadth is 14.6m and the draft is 5.88m. The ship sails on a straight course of a constant water depth from 6.5m to 18m. The wave pattern changes by the depth Froude number as pointed out by Havelock. When the ship speed is critical or super-critical, bow waves ahead of the ship are split to several isolated waves as they propagate. Transformations due to shoaling and refraction occur when ship waves propagate on the sloping coast. When the ship sails on the straight course of 15m deep and the speed is critical, the maximum wave height exceeds to 2m at the water depth of 1.5m.

AIM: To study the clinical features and computed tomography(CT) findings of appendiceal diverticulitis vs acute ***: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 451 patients who had undergone appendectomy inour in stitution from January 2007 to September 2012. Patient demographics, clinical features, pathological findings, and surgical outcomes were analyzed. We also compared preoperative CT images of 25 patients with appendiceal diverticulitis with those of 25 patients with acute ***: Among 451 patients, 44(9.7%) were diagnosed to have appendiceal diverticulitis and 398(86.9%) to have acute appendicitis. Patients with appendiceal diverticulitis were older(59 vs 37 years, P < 0.001) and had a longer duration of the illness(4.0 d vs 1.0 d, P < 0.001). Perforation rates in patients with appendiceal diverticulitis were higher(68% vs 27%, P < 0.001). The appendix could be visualized in only 13 patients(52%) among the appendiceal diverticulitis cases, but in all acute appendicitis cases. CT findings suggestive of appendiceal diverticulitis included the absence of fluid collection in the appendix(84% vs 12%, P < 0.001), absence of appendicolith(92% vs 52%, P = 0.005), and formation of abscess(68% vs 16%, P < 0.001). Appendiceal diverticula were identified in 6 patients(24%).CONCLUSION: Among patients who had undergone appendectomy, 9.7% had appendiceal diverticulitis. Patients with appendiceal diverticulitis had different clinical features and CT findings from patients with acute appendicitis.

六月龄去势公猪表现昏睡、食欲不振、站立困难。尸检发现脾脏边缘呈多重出血灶。从脾脏、肾脏、肌肉和肝脏中分离出革兰氏阳性杆菌,对分离株(TO16177)的16S rDNA基因序列比较分析发现,其可能与未发表过的隐秘杆菌属HJ57-14E菌株(登记号:gi18873551)(比较675bp个碱基,相似性达99.7%)为同一个属。脾脏组织切片的组织学检查发现呈广泛性坏死和炎症,其中革兰氏阳性杆菌显而易见。肝脏中可见多病灶的坏死斑。免疫组织化学检测发现,分离株与抗化脓性隐秘杆菌属(Arcanobacterium pyogenes)和内氏放线菌(Actinomyces naeslundii)的多克隆抗体具有交叉反应,且与后者的交叉反应更强烈。相似的反应也见于扁桃体的化脓灶中分离株,偶尔也见于脾脏和淋巴结中的分离株。本研究结果表明,这种未公开发布的隐秘杆菌属的细菌会引起生长肥育猪多器官功能衰竭,而后继发急性出血性坏死性脾炎。

The East Asian Very Long Baseline Interferometry(VLBI) Network(EAVN) is a rapidly evolving international VLBI array that is currently promoted under joint efforts among China,Japan and *** aims at forming a joint VLBI Network by combining a large number of radio telescopes distributed over East Asian *** the combination of the Korean VLBI Network(KVN) and the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry(VERA) into Ka VA,further expansion with the joint array in East Asia is actively *** we report the first imaging results(at 22 and 43 GHz) of bright radio sources obtained with Ka VA connected to Tianma 65-m and Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescopes in *** test the EAVN imaging performance for different sources,we observed four active galactic nuclei(AGN) having different brightness and *** a result,we confirmed that the Tianma 65-m Radio Telescope(TMRT) significantly enhances the overall array sensitivity,a factor of 4 improvement in baseline sensitivity and 2 in image dynamic range compared to the case of Ka VA *** addition of the Nanshan 26-m Radio Telescope(NSRT) further doubled the east-west angular *** the resulting high-dynamic-range,high-resolution images with EAVN(Ka VA+TMRT+NSRT),various fine-scale structures in our targets,such as the counter-jet in M87,a kink-like morphology of the 3 C 273 jet and the weak emission in other sources are successfully *** demonstrates the powerful capability of EAVN to study AGN jets and to achieve other science goals in *** expansion of EAVN will further enhance the angular resolution,detection sensitivity and frequency coverage of the network.
