Blood flow restriction(BFR)during exercise bouts has been used to induce hypertrophy of skeletal muscle,even with low ***,the effects of BFR during the rest periods between sets are not *** have tested the hypothesis that BFR during rest periods between sets of high-intensity resistance training would enhance ***-two young adult male university students were recruited for the current study,with n=11 assigned to BFR and n=11 to a control *** results revealed that four weeks training at 70%of 1 RM,five sets and 10 repetitions,three times a week with and without BFR,resulted in similar progress in maximal strength and in the number of maximal *** miR-1 and miR-133a decreased significantly in the vastus lateralis muscle of BFR group compared to the group without BFR,while no significant differences in the levels of miR133b,miR206,miR486,and miR499 were found between *** conclusion,it seems that BFR restrictions during rest periods of high-intensity resistance training,do not provide benefit for enhanced performance after a four-week training ***,BFR-induced downregulation of miR-1 and miR-133a might cause different adaptive responses of skeletal muscle to high intensity resistance training.

Effectiveness of an Educational Intervention for Postpartum Depression in a Pre-Parent Classroom

The global incidence of postpartum depression is estimated at approximately 10% - 20%. A lack of partner support is a key factor associated with perinatal depression. This study examined the effects of an educational intervention that provided information for the prevention and early detection of postpartum depression to first-time mothers and fathers who participated in a “First-Time Parent Class.” The study was utilized quasi-experimental research, conducted first with the control group and followed by an assessment of the intervention group. Mothers were assessed using the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale and the Japan Child and Family Research Institute Child-Rearing Support Questionnaire. Fathers’ assessments were conducted using the Japan Child and Family Research Institute Child-Rearing Support Questionnaire for Fathers and were based on responses to questions regarding their coping strategies. Data were obtained from 158 data (72 interventions, 86 controls) couples analyzed. No significant difference was found between mothers’ child-rearing difficulty and depression score rates in the first month after childbirth. There was a difference among fathers in the control group and those in the intervention group regarding their responses to maternal depression: the “consult family” (p = 0.035), “consult friends” (p = 0.033), and “consult the city health center” (p = 0.047) variables were higher in the intervention group;however, the effect size was small. Providing first-time parents with information during pregnancy to prevent and detect postpartum depression will deepen parents’ understanding and help them cope with postpartum depression.

Ubiquitous expression of Sry induces embryonic lethality related to suppression of Tie2/Tek expression

Sry (sex-determining region on the Y chromosome) is a mammalian sex-determining gene on the Y chromosome. In mice, the transient expression of Sry in supporting cell precursor cells between 10.5 and 12.5 days post-coitus (dpc) triggers the differentiation of Sertoli cells from granulosa cells. The importance of the strict regulation of Sry expression remains unknown. Thus, we attempted to produce a Sry ubiquitous-expressing transgenic (Tg) mouse in which foreign Sry is driven by the CAG (cytomegalovirus immediate-early enhancer, chicken beta-actin promoter, and the fusion intron of chicken beta-actin and rabbit beta-globin)-Sry gene for ubiquitous expressing Sry. A low rate (2/127) of Tg pups was observed, whereas the rate of early-stage transgenic embryos before birth was 19.2% (5/26). The Sry ubiquitous-expressing embryos showed abnormal development. The results suggest that ubiquitous expression of Sry exerts a negative effect on embryonic development. One of the two adult Tg mice showed low levels of Sry expression. The other Tg mouse showed high Sry transgene expression, but was mosaic for the transgene. Developmental analysis of transgenic F1 embryos produced from the mosaic Tg mouse revealed that ubiquitous expression of Sry had a lethal effect on embryonic development around 12.5 dpc. The histological data indicated that ubiquitous expression of Sry induced abnormal cardiovascular development, resulting in embryonic death. Enhanced expression of Sry suppressed endogenous Tie2/Tek (tyrosine kinase with Ig and EGF homology domains 2/tunica interna endothelial cell kinase) expression in Sry-transfected primary cultured cells from wild type embryonic hearts. The results indicate that the tissue-specific and stage-specific expression of Sry is essential for normal embryogenesis.

Molecular Phylogeny and Phenotypic Characterization of Yeasts with a Broad Range of pH Tolerance Isolated from Natural Aquatic Environments

In this study, yeasts with broad range of pH tolerance were isolated and characterized from natural aquatic environments in Japan. Only a few basic and application studies of alkali-tolerant yeasts have been reported, despite the unmet industrial needs. First, we surveyed alkali-tolerant yeasts from natural aquatic environments at pH 7.6 - 9.4. We isolated 35 yeast strains that grew in pH 9.0 medium, from seven genera and nine species: 25 strains (N1, N2, through N6, N9, K1, K3 through K19) were Rhodotorula mucilaginosa;one (N7) was Rhodosporidium fluvial;one (N8) was Scheffersomyces spartinae;two (N10 and N13) were Wicherhamonyces anomalus;one (N11) was Cyberlindnera saturnus;one (S1) was Candida sp.;two (S2 and S4) were Candida intermedia;one (S3) was Candida quercuum;and one (K2) was Cryptococcus liquefacience. We examined the effects of pH on the growth of representative yeast strains. Strains K12 and S4 showed high growth at pH 3 - 10. Strains N7, N8, N10, N11, and S3 showed high growth at pH 3 - 9. Strains K2 and S1 showed high growth at pH 4 - 8. All nine of these strains had neutralizing activities from acidic media at pH 3 - 5 to pH 6 - 8. We previously isolated acid-tolerant yeasts (Cryptococcus sp. T1 [1] and Candida intermedia CeA16 [2]) from extremely acidified environments;they showed high growth at pH 3 - 9 and neutralizing activities of acidic media by releasing ammonium ions. Thus, alkali-tolerant yeasts and acid-tolerant yeasts were found to be similar species and have both high growth at a broad range of pH and neutralizing activities of acid media. Previously, we also isolated acid-tolerant, acid-neutralizing yeasts from neutral natural environments (26 strains, 12 species) [3]. Suspected Anaphylactic Shock Associated with Rocuronium in an Infant: A Case Report

We report a case of severe anaphylactic shock in a 5-month-old infant who was scheduled to undergo an external inguinal hernia repair under general anesthesia. Rocuronium used for anesthesia induction was the most likely cause of anaphylaxis. High levels of serum tryptase and histamine detected in the blood sample collected during the anaphylactic reaction confirmed the diagnosis of anaphylactic shock. The patient’s clinical status improved within 90 min of intervention by the intravenous injection of vasopressors and a steroid. Surgery was canceled, and the patient stayed in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) under artificial ventilation for 5 h before safe extubation. The patient achieved full recovery the next day, without any sequelae. The rescheduled surgery was successfully completed 5 months later under general anesthesia without the use of neuromuscular blocking agents.

Clothing Area Factor for Typical Seasonal Clothing of Infant

It is not ethical to conduct experiments on infants regarding the thermal environment. Therefore, to examine the thermal environment of infants, experiments and simulations using a human body thermal model may be feasible by clarifying the human body coefficient values of infants. When focusing on the heat transfer area of the infant’s body coefficient values, the body surface area and solar radiation area factor have only been clarified as the standard. The essential basic data for examining the thermal environment of infants have not been sufficiently obtained. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the clothing area factor for infants’ clothing in a typical season. The clothing area factor of infants clothed in summer, mid-season, and winter clothing was measured using a photographic method. The clothing area factor was 1.22, 1.42, and 1.90 for summer, mid-season, and winter clothing, respectively, indicating a significant seasonal difference. It was also found that the clothing area factor was significantly greater for infants than for adults.
