Correlation of N-myc downstream-regulated gene 1 expression with clinical outcomes of colorectal cancer patients of different race/ethnicity

AIM： To evaluate the role of N-myc downstream- regulated gene 1 （NDRG1） expression in prognosis and survival of colorectal cancer patients with different ethnic backgrounds. METHODS： Because NDRG1 is a downstream target of p53 and hypoxia inducible factor-1α （HIF-1α）, we examined NDRG1 expression together with p53 and HIF-1α by irnmunohistochernistry. A total of 157 colorectal cancer specimens including 80 from Japanese patients and 77 from US patients were examined. The correlation between protein expression with clinicopathological features and survival after surgery was analyzed. RESULTS： NDRG1 protein was significantly increased in colorectal tumor compared with normal epithelium in both Japanese and US patient groups. Expression of NDRG1 protein was significantly correlated with lymphatic invasion, venous invasion, depth of invasion, histopathological type, and Dukes＇ stage in Japanese colorectal cancer patients. NDRG1 expression was correlated to histopathological type, Dukes＇ stage and HIF-1α expression in US-Caucasian patients but not in US-African American patients. Interestingly, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated that NDRG1 expression correlated significantly with poorer survival in US-African American patients but not in other patient groups. However, in p53-positive US cases, NDRG1 positivity correlated significantly with better survival. In addition, NDRG1 expression also correlated significantly with improved survival in US patients with stages Ⅲ and IV tumors without chemotherapy. In Japanese patients with stages Ⅱ and Ⅲ tumors, strong NDRG1 staining in p53- positive tumors correlated significantly with improved survival but negatively in patients without chemotherapy. CONCLUSION： NDRG1 expression was correlated with various clinicopathological features and clinical outcomes in colorectal cancer depending on the race/ethnicity of the patients. The identity of two Lyristes species described by Schmidt is readdressed based on examination of the type materials. Lyristes wui Schmidt, 1932 is recognized to be a junior synonym of Salvazana mirabilis Distant, 1913, and Lyristes altaiensis Schmidt, 1932 is a junior synonym of a North American species, Neotibicen resh （Haldeman, 1852）. Lyristes altaiensis may have been erroneously recorded from China most possibly due to the mislabeling of the holotype.

The object of this study is to obtain experimental data for the boiling heat transfer coefficients and the pressure drops for flow of CO in a horizontal small tube, of which inner diameter is 1.0mm. The experimental conditions considered in this study are following range of variables: evaporation temperature is 0℃, mass flux is from 100 to 800 kg/(ms), heat flux is from 5 to 40kW/m, quality is from 0.1 to 0.8. As a result, the experimental values of the frictional pressure drop are smaller than that given by Chisholm-Laird’s correlation. In the boiling heat transfer coefficient of CO, the nucleate boiling is predominant when the mass flux is low and the forced convection evaporation is predominant when the mass flux is high. Thus it can be assumed that the mechanism of boiling heat transfer of CO in a small tube is similar to that in a tube of relatively large diameter.

Au Nanoparticle Formation from Amorphous Au/Si Multilayer

By direct observations of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), irreversible morphological transformations of as-deposited amorphous Au/Si multilayer (a-Au/a-Si) were observed on heating. The well arrayed sequence of the multilayer changed to zigzag layered structure at 478 K (=Tzig). Finally, the zigzag structure transformed to Au nanoparticles at 508 K. The distribution of the Au nanoparticles was random within the thin film. In situ X-ray diffraction during heating can clarify partial crystallization Si (c-Si) in the multilayer at 450 K (= ), which corresponds to metal induced crystallization (MIC) from amorphous Si (a-Si) accompanying by Au diffusion. On further heating, a-Au started to crystallize at around 480 K (=Tc) and gradually grew up to 3.2 nm in radius, although the volume of c-Si was almost constant. Continuous heating caused crystal Au (c-Au) melting into liquid AuSi (l-AuSi) at 600 K (= ), which was lower than bulk eutectic temperature ( ). Due to the AuSi eutectic effect, reversible phase transition between liquid and solid occurred once temperature is larger than . Proportionally to the maximum temperatures at each cycles (673, 873 and 1073 K), both and Au crystallization temperature approaches to . Using a thermodynamic theory of the nanoparticle formation in the eutectic system, the relationship between and the nanoparticle size is explained.

Bioethanol Production from Molasses by Yeasts with Stress-Tolerance Isolated from Aquatic Environments in Japan

Bioethanol is a safe and renewable source of energy that continues to be a research focus, since fossil fuels have been linked to global warming and nuclear energy sources are affected by the increased safety concerns following the 2011 nuclear power plant accident in Japan. In general, bioethanol is converted from a biomass by yeast fermentation. The production efficiency of this bioethanol is not sufficiently high, and its practical use as a substitute for fossil fuels and nuclear energy is thus limited. For the industrial production of bioethanol, the yeast fermentation of biomass cultures containing high concentration sugar, NaCl, and ethanol is necessary, but this might induce phenomena in which the stresses arising in the yeasts weaken their cells during fermentation. As described herein, we isolated 1028 strains of yeasts from natural aquatic environments: Japan’s Tama River and Lake Kasumigaura. Among them, 412 strains were fermentative yeasts and 31 strains showed high fermentation ability under a 30% sorbitol + 10% ethanol condition. These strains were identified as Torulaspola delbrueckii, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Candida glabrata, Pichia kudriavzevii, Saccharomyces cf. cerevisiae/paradoxus, and Lachancea kluyveri. The strains T. delbrueckii, W. anomalus, and C. glabrata also showed tolerance against 15% NaCl. Most importantly, S. cf. cerevisiae/paradoxus H28 and L. kluyveri F2-67 produced 57.4 g/L and 53.9 g/L ethanol from molasses (sucrose 104.0 g/L, fructose 33.4 g/L, and glucose 24.8 g/L) within 48 hrs at 25°C, respectively.

CBIR系统由于受图像低层特征的限制,制约了它的检索效果。机器学习和统计方法是一种有效的提高检索性能的方法,但通常需要大量的训练样本才能达到满意的检索精度。提出一种理想的距离度量函数,在对图像进行简单分类并提供少量训练样本的基础上,通过类的距离度量矩阵M的学习来考虑分量之间的相关性。这个度量导入二次最佳化问题的解,将训练样本类结构的倾斜最小化。试验结果表明,该方法能在学习样本极少的情况下提高检索的性能。

The Biological Actions and Mechanisms of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor in Healthy and Disordered Brains

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a neurotrophin that elicits neuronal survival and differentiation, synaptic transmission, and the modulation of synaptic plasticity. The biological actions of BDNF are mediated via two distinct receptors: the high-affinity tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) receptor and the low-affinity p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). Recent findings regarding the actions and mechanisms of BDNF are reviewed here. Activity-dependent synaptic plasticity, as exemplified by long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), underlies the cellular mechanism of learning and memory. An accumulating body of evidence shows that BDNF modulates synaptic plasticity. This function requires extracellular neurotrophin release, synaptic activity-dependent local protein synthesis. In addition, a precursor of BDNF, proBDNF, is emerging as a new ligand with biological activities that are distinct from those of BDNF. The proteolytic cleavage of proBDNF is also proposed as a mechanism that determines the direction of BDNF actions. This review discusses the post-translational processing of proBDNF, the modulatory roles of the human BDNF polymorphism Val66Met, recent reports of the novel mechanisms of BDNF expression, and clinical reports showing the roles of BDNF in the blood. Taken together, these data provide new insights into the biological roles of BDNF and its related molecules in the central nervous system.

Proposition of a New Type of Jointless System For Existing Concrete Bridges

Since 1990s, the use of deicing salts （i.e., chlorides） has dramatically increased in areas with heavy snowfall in Japan. As a result, the water mixed with salts has accelerated the damage of the reinforced concrete （hereafter, RC） structures. Recently conducted inspection results of RC bridges have reported that many of the damages or deteriorations are observed at the girder ends and abutments This is caused from the water leakage due to the aged expansion joints. In general, the cost for repairing the damaged RC structures is much higher than that for renewing the expansion joints. Therefore, to prevent these damages, we developed a new highly durable jointless system, named RC plug joint, for existing RC bridges with a bridge length less than 40 meters. The RC plug joint connects the abutment＇s backwall to the superstructure＇s deck using reinforcing steel bars and fiber reinforced concrete. The newly developed RC plug joint system can prevent water leakage and allow for a smooth ride of vehicles at the joint. This paper will explore and discuss the development of the RC plug joint, analysis of conducted investigations, and future installation methods.

The number of patients with lifestyle-related diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and cancer, is increasing all over the world, and that of diabetics is increasing especially rapidly. Diabetic animal models have played a key role in elucidating the etiology of diabetes and developing anti-diabetic drugs. In this review, we overviewed characteristics of diabetic mouse models and pharmacological evaluation using the diabetic models.
