Tree-ring width(RW),density,elemental com-position,and stable carbon and oxygen isotope(δ^(13)C,δ^(18)O)are widely used as proxies to assess climate change,ecology,and environmental pollution;however,a specific pretreat-ment has been needed for each ***,we developed a method by which each proxy can be measured in the same ***,the sample is polished for ring width *** obtaining the ring width data,the sample is cut to form a 1-mm-thick wood *** sample is then mounted in a vertical sample holder,and gradually scanned by an X-ray ***,the count rates of the fluorescent photons of elements(for chemical characteriza-tion)and a radiographic grayscale image(for wood density)are obtained,*** density and the element content are ***,cellulose is isolated from the 1-mm wood plate by removal of lignin,and *** producing this cellulose plate,cellulose subsamples are separated by knife under the microscope for inter-annual and intra-annual stable carbon and oxygen isotope(δ^(13)C,δ^(18)O)*** on this method,RW,density,elemental composition,δ^(13)C,and δ^(18)O can be measured from the same sample,which reduces sample amount and treatment time,and is helpful for multi-proxy comparison and combination research.

Evaluation of bacterial contamination and medium-term oncological outcomes of intracorporeal anastomosis for colon cancer:A propensity score matching analysis

BACKGROUND Although intracorporeal anastomosis(IA)for colon cancer requires longer operative time than extracorporeal anastomosis(EA),its short-term postoperative results,such as early recovery of bowel movement,have been reported to be equal or *** IA requires opening the intestinal tract in the abdominal cavity under pneumoperitoneum,there are concerns about intraperitoneal bacterial infection and recurrence of peritoneal dissemination due to the spread of bacteria and tumor ***,intraperitoneal bacterial contamination and medium-term oncological outcomes have not been *** cavity in *** Of 127 patients who underwent laparoscopic colon resection for colon cancer from April 2015 to December 2020,75 underwent EA(EA group),and 52 underwent IA(IA group).After propensity score matching,the primary endpoint was 3-year disease-free survival rates,and secondary endpoints were 3-year overall survival rates,type of recurrence,surgical site infection(SSI)incidence,number of days on antibiotics,and postoperative biological *** Three-year disease-free survival rates did not significantly differ between the IA and EA groups(87.2%and 82.7%,respectively,P=0.4473).The 3-year overall survival rates also did not significantly differ between the IA and EA groups(94.7%and 94.7%,respectively;P=0.9891).There was no difference in the type of recurrence between the two *** addition,there were no significant differences in SSI incidence or the number of days on antibiotics;however,postoperative biological responses,such as the white blood cell count(10200 vs 8650/mm^(3),P=0.0068),C-reactive protein(6.8 vs 4.5 mg/dL,P=0.0011),and body temperature(37.7 vs 37.5℃,P=0.0079),were significantly higher in the IA *** IA is an anastomotic technique that should be widely performed because its risk of intraperitoneal bacterial contamination and medium-term oncological outcomes are comparable to those of EA.

Propensity score analysis demonstrated the prognostic advantage of anatomical liver resection in hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM:To compare the prognoses of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients that underwent anatomic liver resection(AR)or non-anatomic liver resection(NAR)using propensity score-matched ***:Between January 2002 and December2010,268 consecutive HCC patients,including 110 and158 patients that underwent AR and NAR,respectively,were retrospectively enrolled in this ***-four patients from each group were selected and matched using logistic multivariate analysis followed by propensity score ***:In the whole analysis set,the histological background of the liver,liver function,and tumor marker levels differed significantly among the *** the overall survival(OS)and recurrence-free survival rates of the two groups did not differ significantly in the whole analysis set,the OS of the AR group was significantly longer than that of the NAR group after propensity matching(76.2±6.3 mo vs 58.9±6.3mo;P=0.0039).Although AR(HR=0.456,P=0.039)was found to be a prognostic factor in the univariate analysis,only vascular invasion(HR=0.228,P=0.002)and the hepatocyte growth factor level(HR=52.366,P=0.035)were subsequently found to be independent prognostic ***:AR conveys a survival advantage over NAR in specific subpopulations of HCC patients with tumors of less than 5 cm in diameter,single tumor,and good liver function.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy has dramatically improved patient prognosis,and thereby transformed the treatment in various cancer types including esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in the past *** antibodies that selectively inhibit programmed cell death-1(PD-1)activity has now become standard of care in the treatment of ESCC in metastatic settings,and has a high expectation to provide clinical benefit during perioperative ***,anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte–associated protein 4(CTLA-4)monoclonal antibody has also been approved in the treatment of recurrent/metastatic ESCC in combination with anti-PD-1 *** understanding of the existing evidence of immune-based treatments for ESCC,as well as recent clinical trials on various combinations with chemotherapy for different clinical settings including neoadjuvant,adjuvant,and metastatic diseases,may provide future prospects of ESCC treatment for better patient outcomes.
