Recent Advances in Protein Extraction and Chiral Separation of Biomolecules

Reverse micelles create unique environment in organic media. They are capable of solubilizing hydrophilic biomolecules （e.g., proteins, peptides, amino acids, and DNAs） in their aqueous interior. This feature brings about the practical use of biomaterials in organic media because reverse micelles solubilize them with the intrinsic activity. In this paper, we focus on recent two topics concerning protein extraction and chiral separation of biomolecules using liquid membranes. In the first topic, we present recent attempts to extract proteins from an aqueous solution into isooctane using reverse micelles, and some important operational parameters to achieve an efficient protein transfer are discussed. Furthermore, novel function of reverse micelles as a protein activation medium is introduced. In the reverse micellar phase, denatured proteins were completely reactivated in the reverse micellar solution. The reverse micellar technique is found to be a useful tool not only for protein separation but also for protein refolding. Furthermore, we found that a cyclic ligand carixarene has an extraction ability to set up optimum conditions for protein transfer. In the second topic, we have found that a supported liquid membrane （SLM） encapsulating enzymes shows high enantioselectivity （enantioselective excess value is over 96%） in the transport of racemic pharmaceutical compound ibuprofen. A different experiment also suggests that the α-chymotrypsin-catalyzed reactions droved the enantioselective transport of L-phenylalanine based on the enantioselectivity of the enzyme. The SLM encapsulating the surfactant-enzyme complex enabled the highly enantioselective separation of racemic mixtures. It can be envisioned that arrangement of appropriate enzymes in the SLM system will allow enantioselective separation of various useful organic compounds.

Introduction Scandium(Sc) belongs in the heavy rare earth metal group and use of Sc has continued to increase in many application fields such as light alloy,lighting and fuel-cell *** the recovery of Sc become an important research *** solid phase extraction(SPE) is one of the most useful separation methods because good separation and enrichment factors are obtainable by using a highly efficient adsorbent(ion exchange resin).Recently,novel extractant,N-[N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)aminocarbonylmethyl]glycine(DEHAG) was developed and employed the separation of several metal *** this study,we synthesized a novel adsorbent having amic acid type functional group like DEHAG on a silica gel and examined theseparation and recovery of *** Novel adsorbent was synthesized by modyficating an amic acid having glycine group to silica gels and resin in a similar way as synthesis of *** aqueous feed solutioncontaining 0.1 mM each of metal ions including Sc was prepared by dissolving their nitrate salts in an acid solutionand the p H value was adjusted by HNO or HSO and their ammonium salts.A five milliliter of feed solution and an appropriate amount of modified silica gel were mixed in asealed tube for 60 s in a vibrating mixer,followed by gently shaken at 298 K for 12 h to reach *** aqueous phase was separated and then the metal concentrations were determined by an *** adsorption A((Ci – Ceq)/Ci) *** and Discussion The adsorption behavior of metals by using modified adsorbents is shown in *** shown in Fig.1 the adsorption of metal ions increased with increasing the p H value and the quantitative recovery of Sc was attained at p H>1 under the experimental conditions,where the adsorption of the other metal ions was very *** behavior was similar as that obtained in the liquid-liquid extraction with *** adsorption was also tested using silica gels and resin without modification,and no adsor

Zn Dissolution-Passivation Behavior with ZnO Formation via In Situ Characterizations

In this study,ZnO formation during the dissolution-passivation process of Zn anodes is observed via in situ Raman and optical *** Zn passivation during galvanostatic anodization merely follows the dissolution-precipitation model,whereas that of potentiodynamic polarization exhibits different behaviors in different potential ***,the Zn electrode is gradually covered by a ZnO precipitation film and then undergoes solid-state oxidation at~255 *** starting point of solid-state oxidation is well indicated by the abrupt current drop and yellow coloration of the electrode *** the pseudo passivation,an intense current oscillation is ***,blink-like color changes between yellow and dark blue are revealed for the first time,implying that the oscillation is caused by the dynamic adsorption and desorption of OH *** as-formed ZnOs then experience a dissolution-reformation evolution,during which the crystallinity of the primary ZnO film is improved but the solid-state-formed ZnO layer becomes rich in oxygen ***,oxide densification is realized,contributing to the Zn *** study provides new insights into the Zn dissolution-passivation behavior,which is critical for the future optimization of Zn batteries.

Effects of Water Immersion in Different Water Depths on Respiratory Function and Respiratory Muscle Strength among Elderly People: An Observational Study

The aim was to investigate the effect of three water levels (umbilical, 4th rib, and clavicular) on the respiratory function and respiratory muscle strength among elderly. Spirometry and respiratory strength were measured on land as baseline data. Next, water depth conditions were determined randomly, and spirometry and respiratory muscle strength were measured at each water level. The Vital Capacity and Expiratory reserve volume in the clavicular level were significantly lower than those in the land and umbilical trials. No significant difference was observed in other respiratory functions. Chest circumference and respiratory muscle strength were not significantly different among all conditions.

Preoperative assessment of liver function and perioperative management of posthepatectomy liver failure

PHLF is the status of disfunction in synthesis,excretion and *** to International Study Group of Liver Surgery(ISGLS),PHLF is defined by an increased bilirubin level and international normalized ratio(INR)on or after postoperative 5 days,and is graded by clinical severity from grades A to C(1,2).Grade A is the condition without any *** B deviates from normal postoperative management and requires blood products,diuretics,oxygen administration,and so *** C is the status with multiple organ failure which requires intensive management including respirator,dialysis,and liver transplantation,*** mortality rates in A,B and C were estimated 0%,12%,and 54%,respectively(1).Although PHLF has decreased due to extensive studies of risk factors for PHLF and improvements in surgical techniques,it remains high for several types of *** to a nationwide survey of board-certified training institutions by the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery,90-day mortality rates is 10.3%and 6.7%after left trisectionectomy and hepatopancreatectomy,respectively(3).Further,the mortality rates after associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy(ALPPS)was reported over 5%(4).

Understanding aerosol-vegetation interactions is vital in ***,the interactions remain elusive partly due to the lack of suitable plant growth chamber ***,deposition of submicron particles on leaf surfaces is challenging due to its low deposition velocities compared to larger *** this work,we present a plant-growth chamber that was used to study the effect of sub-micron black carbon(BC)particles on the growth and photosynthesis of *** chamber system simultaneously enables the growth of multiple plants in pots and the deposition of submicron particles onto *** spraying methods assisted by ultrasonic and electrostatic forces were employed as aerosol generators to realize the particle *** flow regime inside the chamber was numeri-cally calculated to predict the transportation of aerosol particles,suggesting the optimal operating conditions of the *** gas-phase particle size distribution measurements showed that gener-ated BC particles were suspended in submicron diameter *** aerosol generators were examined in the chamber using three conductor and insulator substrates as a model of plant *** observations and spectroscopic analysis ascertained that submicron BC particles generated from our generators were deposited on all substrate *** the developed chamber system,systematic studies can be performed to advance the fundamental understanding of aerosol-vegetation interactions.
