A plant growth chamber system equipped with aerosol generators for studying aerosol-vegetation interactions

Understanding aerosol-vegetation interactions is vital in ecosystems.However,the interactions remain elusive partly due to the lack of suitable plant growth chamber systems.Particularly,deposition of submicron particles on leaf surfaces is challenging due to its low deposition velocities compared to larger particles.In this work,we present a plant-growth chamber that was used to study the effect of sub-micron black carbon(BC)particles on the growth and photosynthesis of plants.The chamber system simultaneously enables the growth of multiple plants in pots and the deposition of submicron particles onto them.Two spraying methods assisted by ultrasonic and electrostatic forces were employed as aerosol generators to realize the particle deposition.The flow regime inside the chamber was numeri-cally calculated to predict the transportation of aerosol particles,suggesting the optimal operating conditions of the chamber.The gas-phase particle size distribution measurements showed that gener-ated BC particles were suspended in submicron diameter ranges.The aerosol generators were examined in the chamber using three conductor and insulator substrates as a model of plant leaves.Microscope observations and spectroscopic analysis ascertained that submicron BC particles generated from our generators were deposited on all substrate surfaces.Using the developed chamber system,systematic studies can be performed to advance the fundamental understanding of aerosol-vegetation interactions.

Computer generated hologram from full-parallax 3D image data captured by scanning vertical camera array(Invited Paper)

Full-parallax light-field is captured by a small-scale 3D image scanning system and applied to holographic display. A vertical camera array is scanned horizontally to capture full-parallax imagery, and the vertical views between cameras are interpolated by depth image-based rendering technique. An improved technique for depth estimation reduces the estimation error and high-density light-field is obtained. The captured data is employed for the calculation of computer hologram using ray-sampling plane. This technique enables high-resolution display even in deep 3D scene although a hologram is calculated from ray information, and thus it makes use of the important advantage of holographic 3D display.

Dear Editor,I am Chihiro Koiwa,from the Department of Ophthalmology,Juntendo University Hospital.I am writing this letter to present a case of multiple excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomies(PTKs)for Avellino corneal dystrophy(ACD).Corneal dystrophy is a common type of hereditary,noninflammatory,and bilateral corneal disorder that involves various pathological,histological,and clinical manifestations[1].Advanced molecular gene sequencing has identified specific mutations that are associated with most dystrophies of this type.ACD,also known as granular corneal dystrophy typeⅡ[2],is autosomal dominant and associated with the R124H mutation of the transforming growth factor beta-induced(TGFBI)gene and characterized by deposits consistent with both discrete granular and lattice corneal opacities[3-4].An analysis of the TGFBI gene is essential to differentiate ACD because heterozygous R124H mutation carriers have minimal corneal abnormalities,whereas homozygotes have severe visual impairment,starting from early childhood,and early postoperative recurrence of corneal opacity.

Encrypted Sensing Based on Digital Holography for Fingerprint Images

We propose a novel biometric sensing technique for personal authentication in which fingerprint images are captured using an optical encryption method. This method can reduce the risk of data theft or leakage of personal information captured by biometric sensing. This method, termed encrypted sensing, is implemented using digital holography with double random phase encoding. We demonstrate experimentally that a fingerprint image can be captured as an optically encrypted image and can be restored correctly only when the correct cipher key is used. Moreover, we investigate experimentally the verification accuracy of the decrypted images.

Segmentation of Sinusoids in Hematoxylin and Eosin Stained Liver Specimens Using an Orientation-Selective Filter

The liver comprises cell layers of hepatocytes called trabeculae, which are separated by vascular sinusoids. Under- standing the structure of hepatic trabeculae and liver sinusoids in hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained liver specimens is important for the differential diagnosis of liver diseases. In this study, we develop an approach to extracting liver sinusoids from HE-stained images. The proposed approach involves: 1) a new orientation-selective filter (OS filter) for edge enhancement and image denoising, 2) the clustering of image pixels to identify candidate sinusoids, and 3) a classification procedure that discards unlikely candidates and selects the final sinusoid areas. Experimental studies using a database of 16 images with a resolution of 512 × 512 pixels showed that the proposed approach could segment liver sinusoid pixels with 81% of specificity and 94% of sensitivity. A comparison with a method based on bilateral filters showed that this method improved the sensitivity for all images with an average improvement of 4% and no difference in specificity. The results were presented to a group of pathologists and they confirmed that the images were highly representative of the tissue morphology features.

Static Stretching Combined with Conscious Slower Breathing May Increase Parasympathetic Activity and Reduce Stress in Adult Women

Background: Women are thought to be more susceptible to stress than men in a stressful society, and reducing stress is crucial for women to maintain their health. Static stretching (SST) is applied in various fields to not only increase muscle flexibility but also reduce stress. Additionally, conscious slower breathing (CSB) predominates parasympathetic activity, causing a relaxing effect. These results indicate that combining SST and CSB may be more useful in reducing stress. However, to the best of our knowledge, the effect of this combination remains unclear. Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the effects of the combination of SST and CSB on autonomic activity and stress in adult women. Methods: Eleven healthy Japanese adult female participants performed SST with nonconscious natural breathing for 20 min. The same participants performed SST in combination with CSB (2 s inspiratory and 4 s expiratory) for 20 min on another day. Salivary cortisol and chromogranin A levels were measured before and after stretching as stress markers of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic nervous system. The coefficient of variation of the R-R interval (CVR-R) and high-frequency component (HF), which reflect parasympathetic nerve activity, and heart rate and low-frequency component (LF)/HF ratio, which reflect sympathetic nerve activity, were measured before, during, and after stretching. Results: SST decreased cortisol levels but with no significant changes in chromogranin A, heart rate, CVR-R, HF, or LF/HF ratio. The combination of SST and CSB increased CVR-R and HF levels in addition to decreasing cortisol levels but with no significant changes in chromogranin A, heart rate, or LF/HF levels. Conclusion: These results indicate that the combination of SST and CSB may increase parasympathetic activity and reduce stress. However, future randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes should support this conclusion.

Photocatalytic dry reforming of methane by rhodium supported monoclinic TiO_(2)-B nanobelts

The conversion of methane and carbon dioxide into syngas(dry reforming of methane;DRM)has attracted attention owing to the potential to reuse greenhouse gases.Titanium dioxide(TiO_(2))-based photocatalysts,which have been widely commercialized owing to their high efficiency,non-toxicity,and low cost,are strongly desired in DRM.Here,we report a monoclinic-phase TiO_(2)-B nanobelts-supported rhodium(Rh/TiO_(2)-B nanobelts)catalyst that efficiently promotes DRM under ultraviolet light irradiation at low temperatures.Photogenerated holes in the TiO_(2)-B nanobelts were used to oxidize methane,while the electrons were trapped in rhodium to reduce carbon dioxide.Rh/TiO_(2)-B nanobelts exhibited considerably higher durability and activity than Rh-loaded conventional TiO_(2)(anatase and rutile),owing to the lattice and/or surface oxygen reactivity in TiO_(2)-B nanobelts,which was suggested by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and photocatalytic performance tests under an atmosphere of methane alone.This study paves the path for the effective utilization of methane by constructing active TiO_(2)-based nanometal photocatalysts.

Seeking and developing efficient CO_(2)reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR)electrocatalysts is a hot topic in this era of global warming.Among material candidates for sustainable and cost-effective applications,metal sulfides have attracted attention as promising nature-inspired materials due to multiple adsorption sites which are enhanced by the covalent character of sulfur.This article summarizes the current status regarding the utilization and development of metal sulfide materials as CO_(2)RR electrocatalysts.First,the research background and basic principles of electrochemical CO_(2)RR are introduced.Next,an overview of the main obstacles to developing efficient CO_(2)RR electrocatalysts is presented.The section is followed by a summary of the empirical evidence supporting the application of metal sulfides as CO_(2)RR electrocatalysts beside nature-inspired motivation.The summary of synthesis methods of various metal sulfides is also presented.Furthermore,the paper also highlights the recent works on metal sulfide as efficient CO_(2)RR including the undertaking strategy on the activity enhancement,and finally,discusses the challenges and prospect of metal sulfides-based CO_(2)RR electrocatalysts.Despite recent efforts,metal sulfides remain relatively unexplored as materials for CO_(2)RR electrocatalytic applications.Therefore,this review aims to stimulate novel ideas and research for improved catalyst designs and functionality.

Boiogito Increases the Synthesis and Secretion of Adiponectin by Promoting Differentiation in Cultured Human Adipocytes

Boiogito (BOT) ameliorates insulin resistance and diabetes in several animal models;however, the underlying mechanisms for these in vivo effects remain unclear. Thiazolidine derivatives, which are peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) agonists for the treatment of type II diabetes, promote adiponectin production by inducing adipocyte differentiation, thereby reducing insulin resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of BOT on adipocyte differentiation using cultured human visceral preadipocytes (HVPAds) compared with the thiazolidine derivative troglitazone (TRG). We investigated the effects of BOT (0.125 - 1 mg/mL) and TRG (10 μM) on the differentiation of adipocytes treated with or without tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α: 5 ng/mL). On day 14 of culture, the following adipocyte differentiation marker levels were measured: intracellular lipids, extracellular (i.e., medium) adiponectin, and intracellular differentiation-related genes (PPARγ, CCAAT/enhancer binding protein, adiponectin, differentiation cluster 36, glucose transporter type 4). BOT and TRG increased factors associated with differentiation including lipid, adiponectin, and differentiation-related gene expression levels compared with the controls. The increases in these differentiation markers were inhibited by the PPARγ antagonist GW9662 (20 μM). Furthermore, TNF-α decreased all differentiation marker levels. The decreases in differentiation markers were inhibited by BOT and TRG;however, these inhibitory effects were blocked by GW9662. The results suggest that BOT increases the synthesis and secretion of adiponectin by promoting differentiation similar to TRG. This study is the first to demonstrate that adipocyte differentiation-promoting activity is a mechanism for the beneficial effects of BOT on diabetes and insulin resistance.
