Cyanobacteria have evolved various photoacclimation processes to perform oxygenic photosynthesis under different light *** acclimation(CA)is a widely recognized and ecologically important type of photoacclimation,whereby cyanobacteria alter the absorbing light colors of a supermolecular antenna complex called the *** date,several CA variants that regulate the green-absorbing phycoerythrin(PE)and/or the red-absorbing phycocyanin(PC)within the hemi-discoidal form of phycobilisome have been *** this study,we identified a unique CA regulatory gene cluster encoding yellow-green-absorbing phycoerythrocyanin(PEC)and a rod-membrane linker protein(CpcL)for the rod-shaped form of *** the cyanobacterium Leptolyngbya *** 6406,we revealed novel CA variants regulating PEC(CA7)and the rod-shaped phycobilisome(CAO),which maximize yellowgreen light-harvesting capacity and balance the excitation of photosystems,respective!*** of the distribution of CA gene clusters in 445 cyanobacteria genomes revealed eight CA variants responding to green and red light,which are classified based on the presence of PEC,PE,cpcL,and CA photosensor *** analysis further suggested that the emergence of CA7 was a single event and preceded that of heterocystous strains,whereas the acquisition of CAO occurred multiple *** together,these results offer novel insights into the diversity and evolution of the complex cyanobacterial photoacclimation mechanisms.

Inactivation effect of pressurized carbon dioxide on bacteriophage Qβ and ΦX174 as a novel disinfectant for water treatment

The inactivation effects of pressurized CO2 against bacteriophage Qβ and ФX 174 were investigated under the pressure of 0.3-0.9 MPa, initial concentration of 107-109 PFU/mL, and temperature of 17.8℃-27.2℃. The optimum conditions were found to be 0.7 MPa and an exposure time of 25 min. Under identical treatment conditions, a greater than 3.3-log reduction in bacteriophage Qβ was achieved by CO2, while a nearly 3.0 log reduction was observed for phage ФX174. The viricidal effects of N2O （an inactivation gas with similar characteristics to CO2）, normal acid （HC1）, and CO2 treatment with phosphate buffered saline affirmed the chemical nature of CO2 treatment. The pumping cycle, depressurization rate, and release of intracellular substances caused by CO2 were its viricidal mechanisms. The results indicate that CO2 has the potential for use as a disinfectant without forming disinfection by-products.

Increased tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 expression in human colorectal adenomas

AIM: To determine the expression statuses of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, its receptors (TNF-R) and downstream effector molecules in human colorectal adenomas. METHODS: We measured the serum concentrations of TNF-α and its receptors in 62 colorectal adenoma patients and 34 healthy controls. The protein expression of TNF-α, TNF-R1, TNF-R2 and downstream signals of the TNF receptors, such as c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), nuclear factor-κ B and caspase-3, were also investigated in human colorectal adenomas and in normal colorectal mucosal tissues by immunohistochemistry. Immunofluorescence confocal microscopy was used to investigate the consistency of expression of TNF-R1 and phospho-JNK (p-JNK). RESULTS: The serum levels of soluble TNF-R1 (sTNF-R1) in adenoma patients were significantly higher than in the control group (3.67 ± 0.86 ng/mL vs 1.57 ± 0.72 ng/mL, P < 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed the high diagnostic sensitivity of TNF-R1 measurements (AUC was 0.928) for the diagnosis of adenoma, and the best cut-off level of TNF-R1 was 2.08 ng/mL, with a sensitivity of 93.4% and a specificity of 82.4%. There were no significant differences in the serum levels of TNF-α or sTNF-R2 between the two groups. Immunohistochemistry showed high levels of TNF-R1 and p-JNK expression in the epithelial cells of adenomas. Furthermore, a high incidence of co-localization of TNF-R1 and p-JNK was identified in adenoma tissue. CONCLUSION: TNF-R1 may be a promising biomarker of colorectal adenoma, and it may also play an important role in the very early stages of colorectal carcinogenesis.

Response surface method for modeling the removal of carbon dioxide from a simulated gas using water absorption enhanced with a liquid-film-forming device

This paper presents the results from using a physical absorption process to absorb gaseous CO2mixed with N2using water by producing tiny bubbles via a liquid-film-forming device（LFFD）that improves the solubility of CO2in *** influence of various parameters—pressure,initial CO2concentration,gas-to-liquid ratios,and temperature—on the CO2removal efficiency and its absorption rate in water were investigated and estimated thoroughly by statistical polynomial models obtained by the utilization of the response surface method（RSM）with a central composite design（CCD）.Based on the analysis,a high efficiency of CO2capture can be reached in conditions such as low pressure,high CO2concentration at the inlet,low gas/liquid ratio,and low *** instance,the highest removal efficiency in the RSM–CCD experimental matrix of nearly 80%occurred for run number 20,which was conducted at 0.30 MPa,CO2concentration of 35%,gas/liquid ratio of 0.71,and temperature of 15℃.Furthermore,the coefficients of determination,R^2,were 0.996 for the removal rate and 0.982 for the absorption rate,implying that the predicted values computed by the constructed models correlate strongly and fit well with the experimental *** results obtained provide essential information for implementing this method properly and effectively and contribute a promising approach to the problem of CO2capture in air pollution treatment.

AIM:To investigate the trend in gastric cancer surgery in the context of rapid therapeutic advancement in Japan and East ***:A retrospective analysis was performed on 4163 patients who underwent gastric resection for gastric cancer with histological confirmation between 1971 and 2007 at the surgical unit in Kitasato University Hospital,to determine the trend in gastric cancer requiring ***:Gastric cancer requiring surgical resection increased in our hospital,but the incidence adjusted for population was constant during the observed ***,the ratio of diffuse type/intestinal type gastric cancer was unexpectedly unchanged,and that of advanced/early gastric cancer(EGC)was,however,markedly reduced,while the actual incidence of potentially curative advanced gastric cancer tended to *** incidence of EGC requiring surgery tended to increase as a whole,which is consistent with increased prevalence of endoscopic *** a result,overall survival and mortality of gastric cancer requiring gastric resection has recently markedly ***:In Japan,planned interventions may improve surgical gastric cancer mortality,but an unexpected trend of persistent existence of intestinal type cancer suggests the need for more robust medical intervention.

Protective effects of oral glutathione on fasting-induced intestinal atrophy through oxidative stress

AIM To determine whether oral glutathione(GSH)administration can alleviate the effects of fasting-induced intestinal atrophy in the small intestinal mucosa. ＜正＞This paper presents an iterative CKY parsing algorithm for probabilistic contextfree grammars （PCFG）. This algorithm enables us to prune unnecessary edges produced during parsing, which results in more efficient parsing. Since pruning is done by using the edge’s inside Viterbi probability and the upper-bound of the outside Viterbi probability, this algorithm guarantees to output the exact Viterbi parse, unlike beam-search or bestfirst strategies. Experimental results using the Penn Treebank Ⅱcorpus show that the iterative CKY achieved more than 60% reduction of edges compared with the conventional CKY algorithm and the run-time overhead is very small. Our algorithm is general enough to incorporate a more sophisticated estimation function, which should lead to more efficient parsing.

Prognostic Impact of Surgical Margin Width in Hepatectomy for Colorectal Liver Metastasis

As for resection for colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM), secur-ing an adequate surgical margin is important for achieving a better prognosis. However, it is often difficult to achieve ade-quate margins for the resection of CRLM. So the current sur-vival impact of sub-centi/millimeter surgical margins in he-patectomy for CRLM should be evaluated. In the current era of multidisciplinary treatment options, this review focused on the prognostic impact of a sub-centi/millimeter surgical margin width in hepatectomy for CRLM. We systematically reviewed retrospective studies that clearly described the sur-gical margin width for hepatectomy for CRLM. We selected studies conducted since 2000 that involved patients diag-nosed as having CRLM. We focused on studies that investi-gated not only surgical margins, but also microscopic surgical curability such as R0 (microscopically complete resection) or R1 (microscopically incomplete resection), which clearly de-scribe their definitions. Based on our literature review, 1, 2, or 5 mm was considered the minimum surgical margin width for hepatectomy for CRLM. Although a surgical margin width of 1 mm is acceptable for hepatectomy for CRLM, submil-limeter margins, which are defined as R1 in many reports, are only acceptable for limited patients such as those who have undergone preoperative chemotherapy. Zero-mm mar-gins are also acceptable in limited patients such as those who show a good response to preoperative chemotherapy. New chemotherapy agents have been reported to reduce the prognostic impact of a narrow surgical margin width. The incidence of margin recurrence, which is a major concern regarding R1 resection of CRLM, is about 20-30% according to the majority of earlier reports. As evaluations of the actual prognostic impact of the surgical margin remain difficult, fur-ther study is warranted.

Cryptogenic cirrhosis in the region where obesity is not prevalent

AIM： Recent studies have demonstrated that obesity is the common feature of cryptogenic cirrhosis （CC） and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. However, there is little information on CC in the region where obesity is not prevalent, METHODS： The clinical features, and the liver-related morbidity and mortality of CC were analyzed in Japan where the prevalence of obesity is low. Among 652 cirrhotic patients, we identified 29 patients （4.4%） with CC. Of these, 24 CC patients who were followed up for more than 6 months were compared in a case-control study with age-, sex-, and Child-Pugh score-matched controls having cirrhosis of viral etiology. RESULTS： Obesity （BMI≥25 kg/m^2）, diabetes mellitus, and hypertriglyceridemia were more frequent, and the visceral fat area was larger in the CC patients than in the controls. The indices of insulin resistance were higher and the serum aminotransferase levels were lower in the CC patients than in the controls. Logistic regression analysis identified the elevated hemoglobin A1c, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m^2, and normal aminotransferase levels as independent predictors of CC. Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated lower occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and higher survival rate in the CC than in the controls in contrast to the similar cumulatlve probability of liverrelated morbidity between those ***： CC more frequently presents with the clinical features suggestive of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis compared with controls even in the region where obesity is not prevalent. The lower occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma and higher survival rate may indicate an indolent clinical course in CC as compared with viral cirrhosis.
