Antifibrotic effects of ambrisentan,an endothelin-A receptor antagonist,in a non-alcoholic steatohepatitis mouse model

AIM: To examine the effects of the endothelin type A receptor antagonist ambrisentan on hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in a steatohepatitis mouse ***: Fatty liver shionogi(FLS) FLS-ob/ob mice(male, 12 wk old) received ambrisentan(2.5 mg/kg orally per day; n = 8) or water as a control(n = 5) for 4 wk. Factors were compared between the two groups, including steatosis, fibrosis, inflammation, and endothelin-related gene expression in the ***: In the ambrisentan group, hepatic hydroxyproline content was significantly lower than in the control group(18.0 μg/g ± 6.1 μg/g vs 33.9 μg/g ± 13.5 μg/g liver, respectively, P = 0.014). Hepatic fibrosis estimated by Sirius red staining and areas positive for α-smooth muscle actin, indicative of activated hepatic stellate cells, were also significantly lower in the ambrisentan group(0.46% ± 0.18% vs 1.11% ± 0.28%, respectively, P = 0.0003; and 0.12% ± 0.08% vs 0.25% ± 0.11%, respectively, P = 0.047). Moreover, hepatic RNA expression levels of procollagen-1 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1) were significantly lower by 60% and 45%, respectively, in the ambrisentan group. Inflammation, steatosis, and endothelin-related m RNA expression in the liver were not significantly different between the ***: Ambrisentan attenuated the progression of hepatic fibrosis by inhibiting hepatic stellate cell activation and reducing procollagen-1 and TIMP-1 gene expression. Ambrisentan did not affect inflammation or steatosis.

The Building Standard Law of Japan and related Enforcement Order and Notifications have been substantially revised since the year 2000 to introduce a performance-based regulatory and deregulation system for building control systems. Up to then,time-history analyses were mandatory for isolated buildings and had to be specially approved by the Minster of the Ministry of Construction (MOC).Simplified design procedures based on the equivalent linear method for seismically isolated buildings have been issued as'Notification 2009-Structnral calculation procedure for buildings with seismic isolation'from MOC,and are now integrated into the Ministry of Land,Infrastructure,and Transportation (MLIT).Along with Notification 2009,'Notification 1446 of year 2000-Standard for specifications and test methods for seismic isolation devices'was also *** with heights equal to or less than 60m and that are designed according to these Notifications,including base isolated buildings,only need approval from local building officials,and no longer require the special approval of the Minister of *** paper summarizes:1) some statistics related to buildings with seismic isolation completed up to the end of 2001; 2) simplified design procedures required by Notification 2009 of year 2000;and 3) performance of seismic isolation devices required by Notification 1446 of year 2000.

Spherical silicon solar cell with reflector cup fabricated by decompression dropping method

A spherical Si solar cell with a reflector cup was successfully fabricated by a dropping method at decompression state. In the dropping method, melted Si droplets were instilled at decompression state (0.5×105 Pa) to reduce crystal growth rate, dominating crystal quality such as dislocation density in crystal grains. Spherical Si solar cells were fabricated using the spherical Si crystals with a diameter of 1 mm and then mounted on a reflector cup. The current-voltage measurement of the solar cell shows an energy conversion efficiency of 11.1% (short-circuit current density (Jsc): 24.7 mA·cm-2, open-circuit voltage: 601 mV, fill factor: 74.6%). Minority carrier diffusion length determined by surface photovoltage method was 98 μm. This value can be enhanced by the improvement of crystal quality of spherical Si crystals. These results demonstrate that spherical Si crystals fabricated by the dropping method has a great potential for substrate material of high-efficiency and low-cost solar cells.

Current status of treatment for colorectal liver metastases in the United Kingdom

Hepatectomy is the treatment choice for resectable colorectal cancer(CRC)liver metastases(LM)(CRCLM)according to the national guidelines(1-3).The National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines indicate that the treatment for liver-limited metastases depends on the resectability(1).In the European Society for Medical Oncology guideline,a similar statement is made on the treatment of resectable CRCLM,except for the recommendation of perioperative chemotherapy for some populations with resectable CRCLM(2).In the Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum(JSCCR)guidelines,hepatic resection is recommended for LMs if all the lesions are curatively resectable(3).

Resonant Third-Order Optical Nonlinearities of Poly（methyl methacrylate） Films Containing J-Like Aggregates of a Thiadicarbocyanine Dye

The third-order optical nonlinearities and responses of poly（methyl methacrylate）（PMMA） coating films containing J-like aggregates of a thiadicarbocyanine dye, 3,3＇-diethyl-2,2＇-thiadicarbocyanine iodide （DTDC1）, are measured by degenerate four-wave mixing （DFWM） technique under resonant conditions. The temporal profiles of the DFWM signal of PMMA coating films containing J-like aggregates of DTDC1 are found to consist of three components： i.e., the coherent instantaneous nonlinear response （electronic response） and the two slow responses uqth decay time constants of about 0.8ps and about 7.0ps. The electronic component of the effective third-order nonlinear susceptibility, χc^（3）, of one of the present films is as high as about 2.1×10^-8 esu, and the figure of merit of third-order nonlinearity F （F=χ^（3）/α） is evaluated to be about 1.9 ×10^-13 esu cm at 850nm.

Anisotropy in Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Susceptibility of a Squarylium Dye in a Nematic Liquid Crystal

A squarylium dye is dissolved in 4-cyano-4＇-pentylbiphenyl （SCB） and oriented by sandwiching mixtures between two pieces of rubbed glass plates. The optical absorption spectra of the oriented squarylium dye-5CB layers exhibit high anisotropy. The third-order nonlinear optical responses and susceptibilities X^（3）e of squarylium dye in 5CB are measured with light polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the orientational direction by the resonant femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing （DFWM） technique. Temporal profiles of the DFWM signal of the oriented squarylium dye-5CB layers with light polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the orientational direction are measured with a time resolution of 0.3ps （FWHM）, and are found to consist of two components, i.e., the coherent instantaneous nonlinear response and slow response due to the formation of excited molecules. A high anisotropic ratio of x^（3）e, 10.8 ：k 1.2, is observed for the oriented layers.

Fast Optical Switching Using Oriented Cyanine Dye-Doped Nematic Liquid Crystal

A cyanine dye, 2-[7-（1,3-dihydro-1,3,3-trimethyl-2H-indol-2-ylidene）-1,3,5-heptatrienyl]-1,3,3-trimethyl-3H-indolium iodide （NK-125）, is doped in 4-cyano-4＇-pentylbiphenyl （5 CB）, and the mixture is sandwiched between two pieces of rubbed glass plates. The third-order nonlinear optical properties of the oriented NK-125-SCB layers are measured by the resonant femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing （DFWM） technique at 760 nm. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of one of the present samples is 5.5×10^-8 esu. The slow DFWM response of the NK-125-SCB layers due to a population grating is accelerated by the increasing laser power because of amplified spontaneous emission （ASE）. On the other hand, we do not observe a similar phenomenon for NK-125- polyethylene glycol （PEG-400）. Oriented NK-125 molecules in nematic liquid crystals must have very high ASE efficiency. Hence the population grating in a DFWM signal disappears within about 4 ps. It is expected that NK-125-SCB can be used as a material for very fast all-optical switching.

Large Third-Order Optical Nonlinearity and Fast Response of a Squarylium Dye

The third-order optical nonlinearities and responses of a squarylium dye, 2,4-di-3-guaiazulenyl-1,3-dihydroxycyclobutenediylium dihydroxide, in tetrahydrofuran （THF） solution and in polystyrene （PS） coating films are measured by the femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing technique under resonant conditions. The molecular hyperpolarizability γ of the squarylium dye in the THF solution is determined to be 3.0 × 10^-29 esu at 764 nm, and its electronic component γe is determined to be 1.1 × 10^-29 esu. The third-order nonlinear susceptibility X^（3） of one of the present PS coating films containing the squarylium dye is as high as 3.1 × 10^-8 esu at 80Ohm, and its electronic component Xe^（3） is 1.3 × 10^-8 esu.

Surgical resection for pulmonary recurrence of esophageal cancer after curative esophagectomy

Aim:To clarify the significance of surgical resection for pulmonary recurrence after curative esophagectomy for esophageal ***:Clinical details,such as the recurrence site,timing,and contents of therapies for recurrence,and the prognosis,were examined in 14 patients who underwent surgical resection for pulmonary recurrence that developed after curative ***:The median disease-free interval after esophagectomy was 17.2 *** patients underwent pulmonary resection two times,and in one patient,three *** pulmonary resections were performed when other extra-pulmonary recurrences had been controlled,and R0 resection was *** and/or radiotherapy were additionally performed for pulmonary metastasis in 13 *** median survival time after initial pulmonary resection was 45.5 months,and the 1-,3-,and 5-year overall survival rates were 93%,68%,and 43%,*** 5-year overall survival rate after initial pulmonary resection was 13%in patients with Stage III or IV esophageal cancer and 100%in those with Stage I or II disease(P=0.010).The rate was 56%in patients with tumors<20 mm in size,while all 5 patients with lesions≥20 mm in size died within 3 years(P=0.005).Conclusion:Surgical resection along with systemic therapy is a promising treatment strategy for pulmonary recurrence after curative esophagectomy when it is solitary and *** factors,such as the esophageal cancer stage and the size of the pulmonary metastasis,are useful for deciding on the surgical indication.

Multiple carcinosarcomas of the esophagus with adenocarcinomatous components: A case report

BACKGROUND Carcinosarcoma(spindle cell carcinoma) of the esophagus is an extremely rare event;the etiology and origins of this neoplasm have not yet been ***-mesenchymal transition(EMT) has been associated with invasion and metastasis, and may be related to the generation of a stem cell population within this *** SUMMARY We present the case of a 61-year-old male with nausea and fever. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed the presence of type 1 and 0-Ⅱc lesions located 35 cm from the incisors toward the esophago-gastric *** esophagectomy was performed. Macroscopic analysis revealed three polypoid lesions in the abdominal esophagus that accompanied the main lesion in the lower thoracic esophagus and 0-Ⅱc lesions that spread continuously with them. Histologically, the lesions included proliferating spindle cells. Adenocarcinomatous components were detected in a section near the foot, and squamous cell carcinoma was identified in the mucosa at the base of the *** patient was diagnosed with multiple carcinosarcomas, staged at pT1b(SM3),pN1(#110, #7), cM0, Stage Ⅱ(sarcomatous metastasis to the lymph nodes).Spindle cells did not express E-cadherin but were positive for EMT markers,including zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox 1, TWIST, and snail family transcriptional repressor 2. The patient has experienced no recurrence at 5 years and 2 mo after *** This report suggests that multiple sarcomatous tumors may be generated from primary squamous cell carcinoma via mechanisms related to EMT.
