Encapsulated islets transplantation: Past, present and future

Islet transplantation could become an ideal treatment for severe diabetes to prevent hypoglycemia shock and irreversible diabetic complications, once some of the major and unresolved obstacles are overcome, including limited donor supplies and side effects caused by permanent immunosuppressant use. Approximately 30 years ago, some groups succeeded in improving the blood glucose of diabetic animals by transplanting encapsulated islets with semi-permeable membranes consisting of polymer. A semi-permeable membrane protects both the inner islets from mechanical stress and the recipient’s immune system (both cellular and humoral immunities), while allowing bidirectional diffusion of nutrients, oxygen, glucose, hormones and wastes, i.e., immune-isolation. This device, which enables immune-isolation, is called encapsulated islets or bio-artificial pancreas. Encapsulation with a semipermeable membrane can provide some advantages: (1) this device protects transplanted cells from the recipient’s immunity even if the xenogeneic islets (from large animals such as pig) or insulin-producing cells are derived from cells that have the potential for differentiation (some kinds of stem cells). In other words, the encapsulation technique can resolve the problem of limited donor supplies; and (2) encapsulation can reduce or prevent chronic administration of immunosuppressants and, therefore, important side effects otherwise induced by immunosuppressants. And now, many novel encapsulated islet systems have been developed and are being prepared for testing in a clinical setting.

Corporations need to improve business processes in order to enhance velocity and service levels while reducing their processing costs and differentiating themselves in the face of competition. The levitation of importance beyond support roles has raised IT investment decisions to high priority in chief executive officers＇ agendas. Corporate planning groups as well as lines of business are increasingly applying techniques of IT applications portfolio management in a more systematic fashion to improve decision-making and resource-allocation processes. Recent advances in software engineering and IT service delivery methodologies have achieved the logical separation of business functions from implementation. This separation has made a new breed of innovative IT project possible with a new project risk structure; the adjustment of portfolio management techniques is appropriate. We present an integrated portfolio management model so that the corporation can focus on organic growth through sources at both the department and top management levels. The research gives clear advice as to how top management can seek economic growth by selecting an entrepreneurial strategic posture, implying a strong risk-taking propensity. By integrating a risk-return model and risk-tolerance paradigm to cope with today＇s risk structure, overall capabilities can improve the decision process and the corporation＇s performance as well. The application of the integrated technique to a Japanese manufacturing firm is described.

Japan lacked resources is a large import country and also a large consuming *** it is turned society structure system of consumption goods stocked in domestic,which leads to 450 millions ton waste ***,because of continuing development of intermediate handling and recycled utilization technology,finally disposed waste materials approximately 30 millions *** quantity of concrete product is consumed 300 millions ton per year unprecedented,beau case of large scope,it is expected valid and large absorption industry of recycled material. The purpose of this paper is to do a report on applied present status and future assignment of recycled material and building structure in Japan.

Penetration analysis of elements and bioleaching treatment of spent refractory for recycling

Acidithiobacillusferrooxidans ATCC23270 and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans TM-32 were used for bioleaching of spent refractories of aluminium and copper melting furnaces for their recycling. Firstly, penetration of elements into ahiminium melting furnace refractory was investigated and it was found that up to 7 cm from surface was contaminated. Comparison on leaching efficiency by the strains ATCC23270 and TM-32 found that the strain ATCC23270 could treat larger amount of the refractories than the strain TM-32 could do. In the experiment of bioleaching of spent refractory alumiulum melting furnace by the strain ATCC23270, high leaching efficiency were obtained on A1, Si, and Ca, and extremely low leaching performance was, however, shown on the rest of elements i.e., Na, Mn, and Zn. Under the strain TM-32 use, relatively high leaching performance was recognized on A1, Si, Ca, Na, Mn, and Zn. In the experiment of bioleaching for spent refractory copper melting furnace, almost the same leaching trends were shown on Cu, Zn, A1, and Si under the strains ACTT23270 and TM-32 uses.

One of the major research focuses in the field of gene therapy is the development of clinically applicable, safe, and effective gene-delivery methods. Since the first case of human gene therapy was performed in 1990, a number of gene-delivery methods have been developed, evaluated for efficacy and safety, and modified for human application. To date, viral-vectormediated deliveries have shown effective therapeutic results. However, the risk of lethal immune response and carcinogenesis have been reported, and it is still controversial to be applied as a standard therapeutic option. On the other hand, delivery methods for nonviral vector systems have been developed, extensively studied, and utilized in in vivo gene-transfer studies. Compared to viral-vector mediated gene transfer, nonviral systems have less risk of biological reactions. However, the lower gene-transfer efficiency was a critical hurdle for applying them to human gene therapy. Among a number of nonviral vector systems, our studies focus on hydrodynamic gene delivery to utilize physical force to deliver naked DNA into the cells in the living animals. This method achieves a high gene-transfer level by DNA solution injections into the tail vein of rodents, especially in the liver. With the development of genome editing methods, in vivo gene-transfer therapy using this method is currently the focus in this research field. This review explains the method principle, efficiency, safety, and procedural modifications to achieve a high level of reproducibility in large-animal models.

A New Species of Fejervarya(Anura: Dicroglossidae) from Mawphlang,Northeastern India

A new Dicroglossid species is described from Mawphlang,Meghalaya,northeastern India. The new species differs from all the congeners occurring in this region in body size and call characteristics. It is larger than Fejervarya syhadrensis and F. nepalensis,but smaller than F. teraiensis. It overlaps F. pierrei in snout-vent length,but clearly differs from it in advertisement call,with much shorter note duration,much longer inter note interval,and much lower dominant frequency. Paucity of genetic information and underestimation of species diversity in this region are discussed.

Effect of dissolved oxygen on methane production from bottom sediment in a eutrophic stratified lake

Clarifying the role of sulfate and dissolved oxygen (DO) in methane production may allow for precise and accurate modeling of methane emissions in eutrophic *** conducted field observations of sulfate,methane,and DO concentrations in Lake Abashiri,a typical brackish and eutrophic lake in a cold region,to develop a DO-based method for quantitively estimating methane production in a eutrophic lake and analyzed the *** found that sulfate concentrations decreased rapidly from 900.0 mg/L in water overlying the sediments to nearly 0.0 mg/L in the bottom *** production was almost uniform across sediment depths of 0.05 to 0.25 m,ranging from 1400 to 1800μmol/m^(2)/***,methane production was found to be a function of DO concentrations in water overlying the bottom and could be modeled by a logistic function:constant production at 1,400μmol/m^(2)/day for DO concentrations of 0.0 to 3.0 mg/L,rapidly decreasing to 0μmol/m^(2)/day for DO concentrations of 3.0 to 6.0 mg/*** methane model was verified using a simple one-dimensional numerical model that showed good agreement with field *** results thus suggest that the proposed methane model reduces uncertainty in estimating methane production in a eutrophic lake.

The new turning method was proposed and verified its effectiveness to pathogens by laboratory scale *** the results obtained from the previous studies,it could be said that turning of a composting pile was essential in terms of hygienic aspects but the number of turning should be *** of inactivation was estimated for each composting *** this estimation,turning by layers,which is different from conventional turning that mixes compost pile entirely,was proposed and investigated its performance by *** operations with static pile method,complete mix(conventional)turning method,and proposed turning(layer turning)method were done and their effectiveness on inactivation of indicator microorganism was evaluated and *** results,the conventional turning method was not a proper method in terms of pathogen inactivation,whereas,the proposed turning method showed an excellent performance and should be employed in a composting operation.

The Ontology registry system is developed to collect, manage, and compare ontological information for integrating global observation data. Data sharing and data service such as support of metadata deign, structuring of data contents, support of text mining are applied for better use of data as data interoperability. Semantic network dictionary and gazetteers are constructed as a trans-disciplinary dictionary. Ontological information is added to the system by digitalizing text based dictionaries, developing 'knowledge writing tool' for experts, and extracting semantic relations from authoritative documents with natural language processing technique. The system is developed to collect lexicographic ontology and geographic ontology.
