Introduction: In hospitals and other healthcare settings the presence of airborne and sedimented fungi is an extrinsic risk factor for opportunistic infections involving both immunocompromised and non-immunocompromised persons. In hospitalized patients, it is estimated that 9% of hospital-acquired infections are caused by fungi. Lethality rate varies from 40% to 100% depending on the immunosuppression degree of stakeholders. To prevent healthcare-associated infections, the control of environmental fungal contamination through use of sanitizing/disinfecting practices is basic. However, the widespread use of common disinfectants could promote the growth of antibiotic-resistant superbugs and cause environmental harm. These aspects stimulated the search of new antimicrobial agents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of essential oils of Mentha insularis Req., Mentha pulegium L., Mentha requienii Bentham, Artemisia caerulescens L. ssp. densiflora (Viv), Rosmarinus officinalis L. var. albiflorus, Rosmarinus officinalis L. var. lavandulescens, and Ocotea puchury major Mart. against fungi species frequently found in hospitals and potentially responsible for opportunistic mycoses. Methods: The essential oils’ antifungal activity was carried out by agar disc diffusion technique. Results: All tested essential oils are effective, though to a different degree, against both molds that yeasts assessed. The major antifungal activity was showed by Mentha oils. Particularly, Mentha requienii and Mentha insularis oils were active until 1:8 dilution against Rhodotorula spp. and 1:16 dilution against mixed molds, while M. pulegium was strongly active until 1:2 against both fungi. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, few or no data are available in literature on the activity of essential oils against hospital environmental isolates of fungi. AIM: To identify suitable biomarkers of response to bevacizumab(BV)- it remains an open question. The measurement of serum vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) has been proposed as a predictive factor for this drug, even if literature data are contradictory. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated the role of BV, total and not BV-bound VEGF and angiopoietin-2(Ang-2) serum levels as potential predictive factors of response for BV in combination with an oxaliplatinbased chemotherapy. BV, Ang-2, total and not BVbound VEGF levels were measured at baseline, before 2^(nd) and 5^(th) cycle of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy in 20 consecutive metastatic colorectal cancer patients. RESULTS: Results were correlated to response to treatment. Variability in BV levels have been found, with decreased level in less responding patients. In particular, the concentration of BV increased of 3.96 ± 0.69 folds in serum of responsive patients after 3 more cycles of therapy compared to those with stable or progressive disease with a 0.72 ± 0.25 and 2.10 ± 0.13 fold increase, respectively. The determination of free and total VEGF demonstrated that the ratio between the two values, evaluated immediately before the 2^(nd) and the 5^(th) cycle of therapy, decreased from 26.65% ± 1.33% to 15.50% ± 3.47% in responsive patients and from 53.41% ± 4.75 to 34.95% ± 2.88% in those with stable disease. Conversely, in those with progression of disease, the ratio showed the opposite behavior coming up from 25.99% ± 5.23% to 51.71% ± 5.28%. The Ang-2 levels did not show any relationship. CONCLUSION: Our data show that the ratio of not BV-bound VEGF to total VEGF serum and BV plasma concentrations for predicting the response to BV plus oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy could be a promising biomarker of response to BV.

The current guidelines of the European Union Common Agricultural Policy face the agricultural sector in the position of the backbone for the economic development of rural areas and regions with difficult economic differentiation. The EU Common Agricultural Policy defines agriculture as "multifunctional" and among the different roles and functions expected, there is also the "social function", defined as the ability that the farm has to generate services with respect to a population with risk of social exclusion. This paper investigated all the agricultural initiatives with social impacts that were carried in the lands confiscated from the organized crime (called mafia), mainly in the South of Italy and especially in Sicily. Through an Italian law, these lands could be used with social purposes by a particular kind of associations which might exercise an agricultural activity with the aim to produce food products, sell them in the market and offer employment opportunities in the agricultural sector. In particular, in Sicily, the activity of the "Social Cooperative Placido Rizzotto-Libera Terra" and its winery "Cantina Centopassi" which received honors and awards for its production of wine obtained from the earliest harvests and for its social work in that territory were well known. This work, which was part of a much broader study on "wine and legality", aimed to know the opinion of Sicilian wine consumers and their knowledge about this topic with particular reference to the Cantina Centopassi.

Dermatitis herpetiformis(DH)is a gluten-sensitive autoimmune blistering disorder with a chronic-relapsing *** recently,several Authors reported atypical cases of patients with DH,suggesting that different clinical subsets may exist at least among different ethnicities and that the classical picture of DH probably need a significant ***,different pathogenetic aspects of the disease are currently under investigation,including the role of epidermal transglutaminase,apoptosis and inflammatory cells in the occurrence of skin lesions,in order to explain why only a subgroup of celiac patients will develop ***,although glutenfree diet is still regarded as the only curative approach to the disease,it is very hard to comply with and even small amounts of gluten can re-activate the ***,different therapeutical approaches for the spectrum DH/celiac disease are still under *** the present paper,the most recent advances in DH will be discussed,and a novel interpretation of the disease based on the data emerging from the Literature will be proposed.

目的探讨不同浓度的葡萄糖对体外培养的ECV-304细胞增殖和氧化应激的影响。方法体外培养人脐静脉内皮细胞株ECV-304细胞,用浓度为5.5mmol/L(正常对照组)、15mmol/L(HG15组)、25mmol/L(HG25组)、35mmol/L(HG35组)、45mmol/L(HG45组)的葡萄糖培养液分别干预培养48、72和96h。采用MTT法检测不同干预组的细胞增殖能力;硫代巴比妥酸盐法测定细胞中丙二醛(Malondialdehyde,MDA)含量;采用二硫代双硝基苯甲酸比色法测定细胞中还原型谷胱甘肽(glutathione,GSH)含量。结果随着葡萄糖浓度和暴露时间的增加,细胞增殖明显被抑制,细胞内GSH含量显著降低,与正常对照组比较各组细胞间差异有统计学意义(P<0.01)。同时,高浓度葡萄糖组MDA含量显著增加,与正常对照组比较各组细胞间差异有统计学意义(P<0.01)。结论葡萄糖可以明显抑制体外培养的人脐静脉内皮细胞株ECV-304细胞增殖,并造成显著的细胞内氧化应激,并且随着葡萄糖浓度的升高和暴露时间的延长,上述效应呈现出向严重发展的趋势。
