Effects of native and invasive Prosopis species on topsoil physiochemical properties in an arid riparian forest of Hormozgan Province,Iran

Biological invasions can alter soil properties within the range of their introduced,leading to impacts on ecosystem services,ecosystem functions,and *** better understand the impacts of biological invasions on soil,we compared topsoil physiochemical properties at sites with invasive alien tree species(Prosopis juliflora),native tree species(Prosopis cineraria,Acacia tortilis,and Acacia ehrenbergiana),and mixed tree species in Hormozgan Province of Iran in May *** this study,we collected 40 soil samples at a depth of 10 cm under single tree species,including ***,***,***,and ***,as well as under mixed tree *** results showed that organic matter,moisture,potassium,calcium,nitrogen,and magnesium in topsoil at sites with *** and *** growing in combination with *** were higher than that at sites where *** was present(P<0.05).Sodium at sites with *** and *** growing in combination with *** and *** was lower as compared to that at sites with just *** and *** conductivity was lower at sites with *** and *** growing in combination with ***,and it was higher at sites with mixed Acacia and *** *** on the generally more positive effect of native Acacia and *** on topsoil physiochemical properties as compared to the ***,afforestation with native tree species is preferable for soil *** addition,due to the negative effects of *** on soil properties,*** spread should be better managed.

Mangrove forests are valuable resources in tropical and subtropical regions,which have been faced dieback due to various human activities including rapid expansion of shrimp farming,urban development,and pollution,as well as natural factors such as rising sea level,increasing air temperature,drought,and sharp decrease in ***,the mechanisms of dieback of mangrove forests are not well ***,this research aimed to assess the vegetative,chemical,and physiological status of grey mangrove(Avicennia marina(Forsk.)Vierh.)forests at different intensities of dieback in the Hormozgan Province,Iran.A total of 40 plots categorized into four dieback intensities(severe,medium,low,and control)were randomly selected for monitoring,and various parameters related to vegetative,chemical,and physiological status of grey mangrove forests were *** results revealed that the control group had the highest tree density,seedling density,vitality levels,aerial root density,and aerial root ***,as dieback severity increased,a decrease in demographic and vegetative parameters of trees and seedlings was observed in the dieback *** amounts of heavy metals(lead,cadmium,and nickel)in the sediment,roots,and leaves of grey mangrove trees at different dieback levels indicated that lead levels were the highest in the sediment,roots,and leaves in the severe dieback *** the same time,the control had the lowest *** concentrations in the sediment followed the pattern of severe dieback>moderate dieback>low dieback>control with no significant differences in the roots and *** amounts in all three parts,i.e.,sediment,roots,and leaves showed the highest levels in the severe dieback ***,metal level analysis in the organs of grey mangrove trees at different dieback levels revealed that lead and nickel were more abundant in the root organ compared with the *** contrast,the leaf organ exhibited the highes

Impact of trimming intensity on the growth of mangrove in Iran

Mangrove forests in southern Iran are of high ecological and economic *** forests are being threatened because of uncontrolled harvesting to provide fodder for *** objective of this study is to provide recommendations for appropriate harvesting intensities by quantifying the effect of different harvesting intensities on vegetative and vigor characteristics of mangrove *** study was conducted using a randomized complete block design comprising four treatments(10.00%,20.00%,and 30.00% trimming,along with a control)replicated three *** characteristics were measured before and after trimming(five-year period)and analyzed using generalized linear model statistical *** growths of the average diameter of canopy,canopy area,canopy volume,canopy height,tree height,and collar diameter in the control treatment were all significantly higher than those in the trimming *** addition,there was a decreasing trend in leaf fresh and dry mass,leaf area index,total area of canopy leaves,and health status of tree in the trimming *** example,the percentage change in fresh and dry leaf mass in the control treatment was positive(29.87% and 38.31%,respectively),whereas the trimming treatments of 10.00%,20.00% and 30.00% had negative effects(-7.01% and -4.79%,-11.32% and -14.30%,and -15.84% and -17.29%,respectively).In addition,the changes in leaf area index in the control(4.95%)and 30.00% trimming(-24.57%)treatments were the highest and lowest,*** percentage change in soil organic matter in the control,10.00%,20.00%,and 30.00% treatments were 22.94%,-9.90%,-16.91%,and -18.68%,*** study demonstrated that gray mangrove trees were highly sensitive to canopy trimming,with even minimal trimming intensities negatively affecting vegetative growth and soil organic ***,it is recommended that cutting and trimming of mangrove trees should be prevented even at low intensity to preserve mangrov

Protective Effects of Flavonoid Baicalein against Menadione-Induced Damage in SK-N-MC Cells

Oxidative damage and redox metal homeostasis loss are two contributing factors in brain aging and widely distributed neurodegenerative diseases. Oxidative species in company with excessive amounts of intracellular free iron result in Fenton-type reaction with subsequent production of highly reactive hydroxyl radicals which initiate peroxidation of biomolecules and further formation of non-degradable toxic pigments called lipofuscin that amasses in long-lived postmitotic cells such as neurons. Dietary flavonoid baicalein can counteract the detrimental consequences through exertion of a multiplicity of protective actions within the brain including direct ROS scavenging activity and iron chelation. In this study, we evaluated the neuroprotective effects of baicalein in menadione (superoxide radical generator)-treated SK-N-MC neuroblastoma cell line. Our results showed that treatment of cells with menadione led to lipofuscin formation due to elevated intracellular iron contents and accumulation of oxidative products such as MDA and PCO. Also, menadione caused apoptotic cell death in SK-N-MC cells. However, pretreatment with baicalein (40 μM) reversed the harmful effects by chelating free iron and preventing biomolecules peroxidations. Moreover, baicalein prevented cell death through modulation of key molecules in apoptotic pathways including suppression of Bax and caspase-9 activities and induction of bcl2 expression. Key structural features such as presence of hydroxyl groups and iron-binding motifs in baicalein make it the appropriate candidate in antioxidant-based therapy in age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

Anharmonic 1D actuator model including electrostatic and Casimir forces with fractional damping perturbed by an external force

We modeled a one-dimensional actuator including the Casimir and electrostatic forces perturbed by an external force with fractional damping. The movable electrode was assumed to oscillate by an anharmonic elastic force originated from Murrell- Mottram or Lippincott potential. The nonlinear equations have been solved via the Adomian decomposition method. The behavior of the displacement of the electrode from equilibrium position, its velocity and acceleration were described versus time. Also, the changes of the displacement have been investigated according to the frequency of the external force and the voltage of the electrostatic force. The convergence of the Adomian method and the effect of the orders of expansion on the displacement versus time, frequency, and voltage were discussed. The pull-in parameter was obtained and compared with the other models in the literature. This parameter was described versus the equilibrium position and anharmonicity constant.

Forced vibration of smart laminated viscoelastic plates by RPT finite element approach

In this study,a finite element formulation based on the four-variable refined plate theory(RPT)is presented for forced vibration analysis of laminated viscoelastic composite plates integrated with a piezoelectric *** the best of the authors’knowledge,this is the first time that the proposed approach is extended for study of the dynamic behavior of the smart viscoelastic *** utilized RPT which works for both thick and thin plates predicts a parabolic variation for transverse shear stresses across the plate *** a linear viscoelastic model for the substrate material,the relaxation module is predicted by the Prony *** Hamilton’s principle,the weak form equation is constructed and a four-node rectangular plate element is utilized for discretizing the *** Newmark scheme is employed for advancing the solution in time.A MATLAB code is developed based on the formulations and several benchmark problems are *** the findings with existing results in previous studies confirms the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed *** dynamic response of the smart viscoelastic plates under various electromechanical loads is investigated and the results show that *** can be passively controlled by adding and actuating the piezoelectric *** damping effects of viscoelastic parameters on the results are investigated,too.

Substitution of a fraction of zircon by cristobalite in nano hematite encapsulated pigment and examination of glaze application

Hematite pigment has a long history,but it cannot be used for ceramic application,because it must be thermally and chemically stable at high firing temperature when using a pigment in a glaze or ceramic ***,through encapsulated systems,a new pigment with suitable thermal and chemical stability can be obtained by encapsulating hematite crystals into selected silica or zircon *** means that nano-sized red hematite has been encapsulated into the protected *** electron micrographs of hematite encapsulated into silica and zircon matrices by sol-gel method show spherical single crystals with diameter of about 5-10 *** order to optimize ceramic glaze formulations for application of the synthesized red inorganic nanocomposite inclusion pigment by sol-gel method,four different types of glazes(i.e.,alkalis,borate,earth alkalis,and leaded glazes)have been *** results show that the substitution of a fraction of zircon by cristobalite in hematite-zircon pigment produces acceptable stability with red hue.

Reduction of the wind erosion potential in dried-up lakebeds using artificial biocrusts

The artificial creation of biocrusts can be a rapid and pervasive solution to reduce wind erosion potential(WEP)in dried-up lakes(e.g.,Lake Urmia).So,in this study,we created a biocrust by the inoculation of bacteria and cyanobacteria on trays filled by soils collected from the dried-up bed of Lake Urmia,Iran,to reduce WEP in laboratory *** used the wind erodible fraction of soil(EF)and soil crust factor(SCF)equations to calculate the WEP of the treated *** and SCF were decreased(p<0.05)through applying the co-inoculation of bacteria and cyanobacteria by 5.6%and 10.57%,respectively,as compared to the control;also,the"cyanobacteria alone"inoculation decreased EF by 3.9%.Our results showed that the artificial biocrusts created by soil inoculation,especially with the co-using of bacteria and cyanobacteria,significantly reduced the WEP of a newly dried-up ***,we found that inoculation decreased the WEP of the study soil by increasing the soil organic matter content from 3.7 to 5 *** to scanning electron microscopy images,the inoculated microorganisms,especially cyanobacteria,improved soil aggregation by their exopolysaccharides and filaments;thus,they can be used with other factors to estimate the soil erodibility in well-developed *** inoculation technique could be considered as a rapid strategy in stabilizing lakebeds against wind ***,it should be confirmed after additional experiments using wind tunnels under natural conditions.
