We present detailed characterization of laser-driven fusion and neutron production(-10^(5)/second) using 8 mJ, 40 fs laser pulses on a thin(o liquid sheet employing a measurement suite. At relativistic intensity(~ 5 × 10^(18)W/cm^(2))and high repetition rate(1 kHz), the system produces deuterium±deuterium(D-D) fusion, al.owing for consistent neutron generation. Evidence of D-D fusion neutron production is verified by a measurement suite with three independent detection systems: an EJ-309 organic scintillator with pulse-shape discrimination, a ~3He proportional counter and a set of 36 bubble detectors. Time-of-flight analysis of the scintillator data shows the energy of the produced neutrons to be consistent with 2.45 MeV. Particle-in-cell simulations using the WarpX code support significant neutron production from D-D fusion events in the laser±target interaction region. This high-repetition-rate laser-driven neutron source could provide a low-cost, on-demand test bed for radiation hardening and imaging applications.

Spectrophotometric analyses of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine(RDX) in water

A simple and accurate spectrophotometric method for on-site analysis of royal demolition explosive（RDX） in water samples was developed based on the Berthelot reaction. The sensitivity and accuracy of an existing spectrophotometric method was improved by：replacing toxic chemicals with more stable and safer reagents; optimizing the reagent dose and reaction time; improving color stability; and eliminating the interference from inorganic nitrogen compounds in water samples. Cation and anion exchange resin cartridges were developed and used for sample pretreatment to eliminate the effect of ammonia and nitrate on RDX analyses. The detection limit of the method was determined to be 100 μg/l. The method was used successfully for analysis of RDX in untreated industrial wastewater samples. It can be used for on-site monitoring of RDX in wastewater for early detection of chemical spills and failure of wastewater treatment systems.

Major depressive disorder is a debilitating disorder affecting mill.ons of people each ***-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF)and inflammation are two prominent biologic risk factors in the pathogenesis of depression that have received considerable *** clinical and animal studies have highlighted associations between low levels of BDNF or high levels of inflammatory markers and the development of behavioral symptoms of ***,less is known about potential interaction between BDNF and inflammation,particularly within the central nervous *** evidence suggests that there is bidirectional regulation between these factors with important implications for the development of depressive symptoms and antidepressant *** levels of inflammatory mediators have been shown to reduce expression of BDNF,and BDNF may play an important negative regulatory role on inflammation within the *** this interaction more fully within the context of neuropsychiatric disease is important for both developing a fuller understanding of biological pathogenesis of depression and for identifying novel therapeutic *** we review these two prominent risk factors for depression with a particular focus on pathogenic implications of their interaction.

Experimental Evidence for Coverage Preferences in Fl.od Insurance

We used a hypothetical choice experiment to estimate the effect of dwelling value and coverage limits on the probability of purchasing fl.od insurance while holding the probability of fl.oding and insurance price constant. The results indicate that demand for fl.od insurance is negatively associated with the amount of insurance coverage. For people assigned higher-valued dwellings, however, the opposite effect is observed. Since more coverage is generally preferred to less, all else being equal, differences in purchase probability dependent on dwelling value indicate an inconsistent approach to home protection. The higher probability of purchasing fl.od insurance from people in higher-valued dwellings may indicate an investment into the home as a financial asset, a strategy that is not observed to the same extent among people in lower-valued dwellings. This suggests that use of coverage limits may be differentially preferred based on dwelling value, such that low coverage insurance may have lower uptake for those in high-valued dwellings. As Canada evaluates a national fl.od insurance program, this research suggests that variable coverage maximums could be a way to increase accessibility and uptake of *** research shows an inconsistent demand for fl.od insurance, dependent on dwelling value and independent of income.

Dominance network structure across reproductive contexts in the cooperatively breeding cichlid fish Neolamprologus pulcher

While a large number of studies have described animal social networks, we have a poor understanding of how these networks vary with ecological and social conditions. For example, reproductive periods are an important life-history stage that may involve changes in dominance relationships among individuals, yet no study to date has compared social networks of do- minance interactions （i.e. dominance networks） across reproductive contexts. We first analyzed a long-term dataset on captive so- cial groups of the cooperatively breeding cichlid Neolamprologuspulcher, and found that eviction events were significantly more common around reproduction than expected by chance. Next, we compared the structure of dominance networks during early pa- rental care and non-reproductive periods, using one of the first applications of exponential random graph models in behavioral biology. Contrary to our predictions, we found that dominance networks showed few changes between early parental care and non-reproductive periods. We found no evidence that dominance interactions became more skewed towards larger individuals, became more frequent between similar-sized individuals, or became more biased towards a particular sex during parental care. However, we did find that there were relatively more dominance interactions between opposite-sex dyads in the early parental care period, which may be a by-product of increased sexual interactions during this time. This is the first study in behavioral ecology to compare social networks using exponential random graph modeling, and demonstrates a powerful analytical framework for future studies in the field [Current Zoology 61 （1）： 45-54, 2015].

Accurate and reliable evaluation of muscle strength in para-athletes is essential for monitoring the effectiveness of strength training and/or rehabilitation programmes,and sport *** aim is to synthesise evidence related to assessing muscle strength in *** databases were searched from January 1990 to July 2021 for observational studies focusing on strength *** screening,data extraction,and quality assessment were performed in duplicate.A total.of 1764 potential studies were *** met the inclusion criteria and were included in the *** mean age of participants was 30.7 years(standard deviation[SD]:2.4).The majority were men(88%)participating in wheelchair sports,including basketball,rugby,and tennis(23/30:76%).overall quality varied,with more than half of the studies failing to identify strategies for dealing with confounding *** manual muscle testing being a standard component of para-sport classification systems,evidence examining strength characteristics in para-athletes is derived primarily from isometric and isokinetic *** studies that included comparative strength data,findings were *** studies found strength values were similar to or lower than able-bodied athletic ***,an important observation was that others reported higher shoulder strength in para-athletes taking part in wheelchair sports than both able-bodied and disabled *** need to develop accessible,standardised strength testing methods that account for training influence and establish normative strength values in *** is al.o a need for additional studies that include female para-athletes and para-athletes with greater functional impairments.

Mapping Mountain Front Recharge Areas in Arid Watersheds Based on a Digital Elevation Model and land Cover Types

A recent assessment that quantified potential impacts of solar energy development on water resources in the southwestern United States necessitated the development of a methodology to identify locations of mountain front recharge (MFR) in order to guide land development decisions. A spatially explicit, slope-based al.orithm was created to delineate MFR zones in 17 arid, mountainous watersheds using elevation and land cover data. Slopes were calculated from elevation data and grouped into 100 classes using iterative self-organizing classification. Candidate MFR zones were identified based on slope classes that were consistent with MFR. land cover types that were inconsistent with groundwater recharge were excluded from the candidate areas to determine the final MFR zones. No MFR reference maps exist for comparison with the study’s results, so the reliability of the resulting MFR zone maps was evaluated qualitatively using slope, surficial geology, soil, and land cover datasets. MFR zones ranged from 74 km2 to 1547 km2 and accounted for 40% of the total watershed area studied. Slopes and surficial geologic materials that were present in the MFR zones were consistent with conditions at the mountain front, while soils and land cover that were present would generally promote groundwater recharge. Visual inspection of the MFR zone maps al.o confirmed the presence of well-recognized alluvial fan features in several study watersheds. While qualitative evaluation suggested that the al.orithm reliably delineated MFR zones in most watersheds overall, the al.orithm was better suited for application in watersheds that had characteristic Basin and Range topography and relatively flat basin fl.ors than areas without these characteristics.
