Background:Diabetes-related cataract extraction is a minor surgery required to regain full *** of the recognized factors that can delay or prevent full-vision recovery is poor management,and most of this management is being carried out by patients ***:This study aimed to assess the knowledge of diabetes patients on self-management after cataract extraction in two tertiary hospitals in Osun ***:A cross-sectional descriptive design was conducted among 97 diabetes patients who underwent cataract extraction and were attending clinics and follow-up visits in Osun State.A self-structured questionnaire was used for data ***:Moderate knowledge was found among the participants on an appropriate diet(56.7%),prevention of injury risk(57.5%),prevention of infection risk(50.9%),and low knowledge on the technique of administration of eye drop(60.8%)after cataract extraction,whereas 74.7%of the total respondents were knowledgeable on the indication for follow-up visit after cataract extraction,these results were found to be below the expected knowledge ***:An intensive and comprehensive educational initiative by nurses should be tailored to meet the specific needs of diabetes patients with cataract *** also need to implement the use of checklist which will enhance learning and improve patient understanding of self-management after cataract extraction.

A synergistic effect of zinc oxide nanoparticles and polyethylene butene improving the rheology of waxy crude oil

This research examined the use of 75 nm zinc oxide nanoparticles(nano ZnO)and polyethylene butene(PEB)to decrease the viscosity of Nigerian waxy crude *** rheology of the crude oil was assessed by measuring the viscosity and shear stress of samples containing PEB at 500,1000,2000,3000,4000 or 5000 ppm and nano ZnO at 1,2,3 or 4 wt% between 10 and 35℃ at shear rates from 1.7 to 1020 s^(-1).Rheological modeling indicated that a power law pseudoplastic model was the best fit for the experimental data,giving a regression coefficient of *** addition of these inhibitors induced Newtonian fluid behavior in the crude samples such that the shear stress-shear rate relationship plots were linear at all *** optimum concentrations of the inhibitors in this study were 2000 ppm PEB(providing a 33% viscosity reduction)and 1 wt% nano ZnO(providing a 26% viscosity reduction).A combination of these additives at these concentrations provided a synergistic effect and gave a greater viscosity reduction of 41%.This work demonstrates that a blend of ZnO nanoparticles and PEB can improve the flowability of waxy crude.

Assessment of nurses’knowledge of the prevention of hospital-associated venous thromboembolism in a tertiary health institution in Nigeria

Objective:This study assessed the level of nurses’knowledge of the prevention of venous thromboembolism(VTE)in a tertiary health *** and Methods:This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 328 eligible respondents,selected using a random sampling method in a teaching hospital in Nigeria.A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data on the basic knowledge,risk factors,and preventive measures of ***:Findings from the study revealed that 51.2%scored above the mean score of 28.6±*** educational status of the respondents had a significant influence on their knowledge of risk factors of VTE(F=4.696,P=0.031).Conclusion:The overall knowledge of nurses is satisfactory,although the majority could not answer correctly questions on the administration of prefilled anticoagulants and identification of some key risk factors of VTE.

Anticancer potential of metabolic compounds from marine actinomycetes isolated from Lagos Lagoon sediment

Thirty-two actinomycetes strains were isolated from sediment samples from 12 different sites at Lagos Lagoon and identified using standard physiological and biochemical procedures as well as 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis. Secondary metabolites were extracted from the strains and their anticancer activity on the K562 (Human acute myelocytic leukemia), HeLa (cervical carcinoma), AGS (Human gastric), MCF- 7 (breast adenocarcinoma) and HL-60 (Human acute promyelocytic leukemia) cell lines was determined. The metabolic extracts exhibited cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 0.030 mg/mL to 4.4 mg/mL. The Streptomyces bingchenggensis ULS14 extract was cytotoxic against all the cell lines tested. The bioactivity-guided extraction and purification of the metabolic extracts from this strain yielded two purified anticancer compounds: ULDF4 and ULDF5. The structures of the extracted compounds were determined using spectroscopic analyses, including electrospray ionization mass spectrophotometer and nuclear magnetic resonance (1 Dimensional and 2 Dimensional), and were shown to be structurally similar to staurosporine and kigamicin. The IC50 of ULDF4 and ULDF5 against the HeLa cell line was 0.034 mg/mL and 0.075 mg/mL, respectively. This study is the first to reveal the anticancer potential of actinomycetes from Lagos Lagoon, which could be exploited for therapeutic purposes.

Hyoscyamine-producing marine Actinomycetes from Lagos Lagoon sediment

Objective:To isolate and screen Actinoniycetes from Lagos Lagoon soil sediments for production of bioactive ***:Sediment samples were collected from four different locations of Lagos Lagoon and were dried for 2 weeks after which the Actinoniycetes were isolated by serial dilution using the spread plate method on starch casein and Kuster's agar supplemented with 80 ug/mL cycloheximide to prevent fungal *** plates were incubated at 28 C for 1-2 *** were selected based on their colonial characteristics as well as their Gram's reaction and subciiltured using the same media for isolation until pure cultures were obtained and incubated at 28 C for 3 ***,they were inoculated into starch casein and Kuster's broth media and incubated for 8 *** secondary metabolites were screened for antimicrobial activity against the following microorganisms:methicillin resistant Staphylococcus *** aureus ATCC *** coli ATCC *** aeruginosa ATCC *** albicans and Enterocolitis faecal is ATCC *** staphylococci isolated from HIV patients were also used(Staphylococcus *** xylosus and Staphylococcus epidennidis).The antimicrobial metabolites of the Actinoniycetes isolates were identified using gas chromatography(GC).Results:Crude extracts of isolates showed antimicrobial activity against some of the test *** GC data analysis showed the antibiotic profile of these ***:Analysis of the crude extracts of the isolates using GC method,revealed the presence of antibiotics including an anticholinergic hyoscyamine among other conclusions.

Analysis of Incremental Load Damaging Effects of Overloaded Trucks on Federal Highway Pavement Structures in Nigeria

The study is to assess the present serviceability rating of Nigerian highways and the load damage effects of overloaded trucks. The researchers used the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) methods. In this study, the highway section of Lokoja-Abuja, Ilorin-Jebba and Abakiliki-Ogoja via Mbok roads were selected, and data were collected through an axle-load survey, automatic traffic count and from secondary sources. The rate of gross vehicle weight violation was found, ranging from 20% to 94% of the axle load distribution across the studied network. Comparing the overloaded vehicle damage factor (V.D.F.) and standard V.D.F., the range was from 1.2 to 41.34 times across the road networks studied, and this explained why the pavement structures of Nigerian roads tend to deteriorate during its service life rapidly. Present serviceability rating was estimated at 3.45, 4.41 and 3.35 for Lokoja-Abuja, Ilorin-Jebba and Abakiliki-Ogoja roads respectively, showing depletion from their initial conditions. The damaging effects of the HGV are less severe at Lokoja-Abuja Road (with g = 0.30), followed by Ilorin-Jebba Road (with g = 0.35) and more in Abakiliki-Ogoja Road (with g = 0.43). The heaviest overload of 94% of the 6-axle vehicles plying at the Lokoja-Abuja road could explain this intense damaging effect on the road pavement

Protective effects ofLactobacillus plantarum against epithelial barrier dysfunction of human colon cell line NCM460

AIM: To investigate the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum ) in the intestinal permeability and expression of tight junction (TJ) using the normal human colon cell line NCM460. METHODS: Paracellular permeability of NCM460 monolayers was determined by transepithelial electrical resistance and dextran permeability. Expression of TJ proteins in NCM460 cell monolayers was detected by Western blotting and quantitative real-time polymerase chain ***: L. plantarum played an important role in increasing transepithelial electrical resistance and decreasing the permeability to macromolecules of NCM460 monolayers against the disruption caused by enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli ) or enteroinvasive E. coli . L. plantarum also prevented the decrease in the expression of TJ proteins and F-actin in NCM460 ***: L. plantarum can protect against dysfunction of NCM460 intestinal epithelial barrier caused by enteropathogenic E. coli or enteroinvasive E. coli , and thus can be a potential candidate of therapeutic agents for the treatment of intestinal diseases.

Terminal-Modality-Based Joint Call Admission Control Algorithm for Fair Radio Resource Allocation in Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

There is a problem of unfairness in allocation of radio resources among heterogeneous mobile terminals in heterogeneous wireless networks. Low-capability mobile terminals (such as single-mode terminals) suffer high call blocking probability whereas high-capability mobile terminals (such as quad-mode terminals) experience very low call blocking probability, in the same heterogeneous wireless network. This paper proposes a Terminal-Modality-Based Joint Call Admission Control (TJCAC) algorithm to reduce this problem of unfairness. The proposed TJCAC algorithm makes call admission decisions based on mobile terminal modality (capability), network load, and radio access technology (RAT) terminal support index. The objectives of the proposed TJCAC algorithm are to reduce call blocking/dropping probability, and ensure fairness in allocation of radio resources among heterogeneous mobile terminals in heterogeneous networks. An analytical model is developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed TJCAC scheme in terms of call blocking/dropping probability in a heterogeneous wireless network. The performance of the proposed TJCAC algorithm is compared with that of other JCAC algorithms. Results show that the proposed algorithm reduces call blocking/dropping probability in the networks, and ensure fairness in allocation of radio resources among heterogeneous terminals.

Turning teawaste particles into magnetic bio-sorbents particles for arsenic removal from wastewater:Isotherm and kinetic studies

The primary objective of this research was to assess the potential of magnetic bleached biochar(MBBC)as a cost-effective adsorbent for arsenic *** achieve this,locally collected tea wastes underwent meticulous cleaning,bleaching,and modifications via thermal and chemical *** non-magnetic and magnetic biochar adsorbents were thoroughly characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)and thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA).Subsequently,the adsorptive performance of MBBC in removing arsenic from wastewater samples was investigated,considering various crucial parameters such as adsorbent-adsorbate contact time,concentration of As,temperature,adsorbent dosage,and the regeneration-ability of the *** experimental data for the adsorption process were best represented by the Langmuir isotherm,indicating its suitability for the MBBC ***,the MBBC demonstrated a maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of approximately 714 mg/g at room temperature,highlighting its efficiency as an arsenic ***,the Lagergren's Pseudo-second order kinetic model proved to be the most suitable for describing the adsorption kinetics,confirming the chemisorption nature of the *** results also indicated that the adsorption process is endothermic and feasible,suggesting its viability for practical *** all findings into account,the comprehensive analysis strongly supports the potential use of MBBC as a highly promising and cost-effective adsorbent for efficiently removing arsenic from aqueous *** research contributes valuable insights to the field of wastewater treatment and offers a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for tackling arsenic contamination in water sources.
