The feelings and thoughts of mental health nurses concerning the management of distressed and disturbed in-patients: A comparative qualitative European study

High levels of distress and disturbance amongst those experiencing acute mental illness can be a major problem for mental health nurses. The feelings experienced by these nurses when caring for and supporting disturbed and/or distressed patients along with their concurrent thoughts are not well described in the literature. To date, this complex issue has not been explored within a comparative European context. The objective of this qualitative study was to explore the feelings and thoughts of mental health nurses when supporting and caring for distressed and/or disturbed patients in 6 European countries. Methods: Focus groups were used to collect data from 130 mental health nurses working in acute inpatient psychiatric settings. Results: Data were analysed using content analysis. Findings highlighted 6 broad themes: 1) Mixed emotions: expressive and responsive, 2) Procedure for caring for and supporting disturbed and/or distressed patients, 3) Use of guidelines for caring and supporting disturbed and/or distressed patients, 4) Team and organisational support, 5) Ethical concerns: Cognitive dissonance and 6) Education and training. Commonalities and differences were?found across all themes. Approaches to care, nurses’ role and education, clinical guidelines and/or standards vary from country to country, therefore the care, treatment and management of distressed and/or disturbed patients are various. As a result, mental health nurses have different experiences, various emotional quandaries concurrent with cognitive dissonance and different coping strategies when caring for and supporting distressed and disturbed patients. Conclusions: More emphasis needs to be given to the emotional quandaries and concurrent cognitive dissonance experienced by mental health nurses caring for distressed and/or disturbed inpatients in acute psychiatric settings. Increased access to education and training with particular attention to interpersonal communication and relationship building

利用Minirhizotron技术 ,研究了位于美国路易斯安那州的 19年生的火炬松新根生长动态。结果表明 ,火炬松新根的根量密度随时间呈增长趋势 ,在生长季末的 1、2月份达到最大。经过林地土壤干旱处理 (通过建立穿透雨隔离系统 ,阻止雨水到达地面 )的树木的根量密度自 9.3cm处 ,随土壤深度增加呈下降趋势 ,未经干旱处理的树木在离土表 80　 10 0cm深处仍有较高的根量密度 ,达 3.4 8　5 .12条·m- 1,是经干旱处理树木对应土壤层次中根量密度的 10多倍。火炬松从 3月份开始发生新根 ,随后迅速增加 ,至 6月份发生最多 ,然后缓慢减少 ,5　 7月的新根发生数占总量的 4 1.8% ,大部分新根发生在离土表 30cm以内的土壤中。 11个月的干旱处理显著地降低火炬松的根量密度 (1 1条·m- 1,未经干旱处理的为 3 2 7条·m- 1)和新根发生数 (5 7条·株- 1,未经干旱处理的为 15 6条·株 - 1) ,干旱处理还可导致新根推迟 1 0　 1.5个月发生。

Cytochrome C, is a mitochondrial protein(～13 kDa) which plays important roles in oxidative phosphorylation and apoptosis, or programmed cell death. Elevated plasma concentrations(～2 μg/mL) of circulating cytochrome C have been reported in patients with conditions associated with mitochondrial damage1. Use of LC-MS analysis for protein quantification has become more popular in the past few years due to the many benefits it offers(e.g., multiplexing, improved specificity, broader linear dynamic range, and faster method development times). However, for protein quantification by LC-MS, these protein digestion workflows are complex and time consuming, with enzymatic digestions often taking upwards of 24 hours to achieve sensitive and accurate quantification from complex biological matrices. Thus, We developed a rapid digestion and reproducible LC-MS method for the accurate quantification of cytochrome C in plasma. 35 μL plasma sample were digested for 10 minutes using ProteinWorks e Xpress Direct Digest Kit. Post digestion purification of signature peptides was completed using the ProteinWorks μElution SPE Clean-up Kit(15 minute SPE). Four unique tryptic peptide were identified: TGPNLHGLFGR, MIFAGIK, EDLIAYLK, and GITWGEETLMEYLENPKK. Chromatographic separation of cytochrome C tryptic peptides was achieved using a CORTECS UPLC C18+, 1.6 μm, 2.1 mm x 50 mm Column(5 minute method), which provides excellent peak shape, narrow peak widths(<3 secs at base), and resolution from matrix interferences. This method achieved excellent linearity and single digit RSDs(relative standard deviation) for duplicate calibration curves. The limit of quantification for Four unique signature tryptic peptide was 2 μg/ml. For all four peptides, at all QC levels, samples demonstrated excellent accuracy and precision with an average %CV of 2.5%. This work demonstrates proof of concept for the rapid, accurate and precise quantification of the protein biomarker, cytochrome C. The combination of the

This short review deals with soils as an important source of the greenhouse gas N2O. The production and consumption of N2O in soils mainly involve biotic processes: the anaerobic process of denitrification and the aerobic process of nitrification. The factors that significantly influence agricultural N2O emissions mainly concern the agricultural practices (N application rate, crop type, fertilizer type) and soil conditions (soil moisture, soil organic C content, soil pH and texture). Large variability of N2O fluxes is known to occur both at different spatial and temporal scales. Currently new techniques could help to improve the capture of the spatial variability. Continuous measurement systems with automatic chambers could also help to capture temporal variability and consequently to improve quantification of N2O emissions by soils. Some attempts for mitigating soil N2O emissions, either by modifying agricultural practices or by managing soil microbial functioning taking into account the origin of the soil N2O emission variability, are reviewed.
