Objective: This study was to compare this multiple-field conformal technique to the 2-dimensional (2D) conventional technique with respect to target volume coverage and dose to normal tissues. Methods: We conducted a single institutional prospective comparative dosimetric analysis of 15 patients who received radical radiation therapy for bladder cancer presented to Radiotherapy Department in National Cancer Institute, Cairo (Egypt), in period between November 2011 to July 2012 using 3-dimensional (3D) conformal radiotherapy technique for each patient, a second 2D conventional radiotherapy treatment plan was done, the two techniques were then compared using dose volume histogram (DVH) analysis. Results: Comparing different DVHs, it was found that the planning target volume (PTV) was adequately covered in both (3D & 2D) plans while it was demonstrated that this multiple field conformal technique produced superior distribution compared to 2D technique, with considerable sparing of rectum and to lesser extent for the head of both femora. Conclusion: From the present study, it is recommended to use 3D planning for cases of bladder cancer especially in elderly patients as it produces good coverage of the target volume as well as good sparing of the surrounding critical organs.

Volumetric Assessment of Corticospinal Tract Infiltration by Astrocytoma Using Diffusion Tensor Tractography

This paper presents a proposed low cost high efficiency solar cell structure. The main advantage of the structure is that it is etched through a p + silicon wafer. Highly doped silicon is considered to be low quality and impure silicon therefore the structure based on low cost starting material. In addition, the proposed structure is etched as strips through the wafer so its series resistance is very low. This result in high fill factor. Simulations for the structure are carried out using advanced TCAD tools. I - V C/C'S is presented. The open circuit voltage (V oc ), short circuit current density (J sc ), fill factor (F.F) and conversion efficiency are calculated. The output results are compared with the high efficiency;high cost single crystalline solar cells. In addition, an important study is carried out to enhance the structure to be responded to the ultraviolet part of the solar radiation spectrum. For this study, external quantum efficiency is presented as this is the best way for measuring the structure performance for each part of the input solar radiation spectrum.

Objectives: The aim of the study is to assess volumetric Corticospinal Tract infiltration by Astro-cytoma using Diffusion Tensor Tractography. Material and Methods: Preoperative, anatomic (T1- and T2-weighted) and diffusion tensor MRI were performed in 9 patients with supratentorial gliomas (WHO grade II and III). The tumors were manually segmented from the T1- and T2-weighted MRI, and their volume calculated. A three-dimensional tractography was performed in each case. A second segmentation and volume measurement was performed on the tumor regions intersecting adjacent white matter fiber tracts. Results: We identified that white matter tracts were infiltrated by 6 Astrocytoma tumors. The median tumor volume (±standard deviation) in our patient population was 33 ± 26.82 ml. The median tumor volume (±standard deviation) infiltrating white matter fiber tracts was 4.15 ± 9.23 ml. The median fraction of tumor volume infiltrating white matter fiber tracts was 26.3% ± 10.1%. Conclusions: Diffusion tensor MR Tractography is a reliable preoperative assessment tool since it detects extensive white matter infiltration by Astrocytoma irrespective of brain tumors volume. Recommendations: Prospective large population studies are required to clarify how infiltration relates to tumor location.

Objective:This study was to compare this multiple-field conformal technique to the AP-PA technique with respect to target volume coverage and dose to normal ***:We conducted a single institutional prospective comparative dosimetric analysis of 22 patients who received neoadjuvant radiation therapy for rectal cancer presented to radiotherapy department in National Cancer Institute,Cairo in period between June 2010 to September 2011 using 3D conformal radiotherapy technique for each patient,a second radiotherapy treatment plan was done using an anteroposterior (AP-PA) fields,the two techniques were then compared using dose volume histogram (DVH) ***:Comparing different DVHs,it was found that the planning target volume (PTV) was adequately covered in both (3D & 2D) plans while it was demonstrates that this multiple field conformal technique produces superior distribution compared to 2D technique,with considerable sparing of bladder,ovaries and head of both ***:From the present study,it shows that it is recommended to use 3D planning for preoperative cases of cancer rectum so far it produces good coverage of the target as well as good sparing of the surrounding critical organs.

Objective: To evaluate the susceptibility of Mycobacterium aurum and Mycobacterium smegmatis in vitro to the essential oils obtained from two medicinal plants: Thymus satureioides(T. satureioides) and Mentha pulegium(M. pulegium), and to study their chemical ***: The aerial parts of T. satureioides and M. pulegium(leaves and stems) were hydro-distillated using a Clevenger-type apparatus and essential oils were analyzed and identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Antimycobacterial screening of essential oils was performed on the basis of the inhibition zone diameter by disc diffusion method against two mycobacterial strains whereas the minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration were determined by using the micro-dilution ***: Chemical analysis of their aerial part's essential oils gave as major compounds,borneol(34.26%), carvacrol(31.21%) and thymol(3.71%) for T. satureioides and R(+)-pulegone(75.48%), carvone(6.66%) and dihydrocarvone(4.64%) for M. *** their antimycobacterial effect evaluation, using the micro-dilution method,indicated that minimal inhibitory concentration values of T. satureioides essential oil ranged from 0.062% to 0.015%(v/v) and from 0.125% to 0.031%(v/v) for M. pulegium respectively against Mycobacterium aurum and Mycobacterium ***: It is clearly evident from the results obtained that the Moroccan medicinal plants have great potential to be used as anti-tuberculosis agents. These findings may help scientists to undertake several research projects to discover useful natural product as new anti-tuberculosis drug.

Utility of 2-Methyl-quinazolin-4(3H)-one in the Synthesis of Heterocyclic Compounds with Anticancer Activity

Quinolino[2,1-b]quinazolines 3 and 4, pyrrolo[2,1-b]quinazoline 5 and various substituted 2-(4-chlorostyryl)quinazoline derivatives including: 4-amino derivative 8, 4-hydrazino derivative 9, thiourea derivative 10, thiosemicarbazide derivative 19, 4-benzylidene hydrazinyl derivative 21, 4-amino thiazolidene derivatives 11, 12, 13, 22, imidazoquinazolines 15, 16, quinazolinium chloride 14, triazino[4,3-c]quinazolines 17, 18, tetrazino[1,6-c]quinazoline 20, 4-amino azetidinyl derivative 23, triazolo[4,3-c]quinazoline 24, 4-amino substituted quinazolines 25, 26, 27, 29 and quinazolino quinazoline 28 were synthesized through different chemical reactions. The obtained compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antitumor activity against HEPG2 and MCF-7 cell lines compared to the reference drug (doxorubicin). Compounds 18, 19, 20, 23 and 24 were found to be the most active against both cell lines exhibiting IC50 values ranging from 10.82 - 29.46 μM/L and 7.09 - 31.85 μM/L against Hep-G2 and MCF-7 cell lines, respectively, in addition to docking study of these five compounds against thymidylate synthase and dihydrofolate reductase enzymes active sites.

Association of XbaI GLUT1 Polymorphism with Susceptibility to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Diabetic Nephropathy

Objectives: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the chronic microangiopathic complications of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and has become the most frequent cause of end-stage renal disease. The XbaI polymorphism in the glucose transporter (GLUT1) has been suggested in the development of DN. We examined the association between XbaI polymorphism of GLUT1 and susceptibility to T2DM and development of DN. Methods: The study included 227 T2DM patients divided into 107 without DN (DM ? DN) and 120 with DN (DM + DN), in addition to 100 apparently healthy controls. Genotyping was done by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: The GLUT1 XbaI T allele was associated with increased susceptibility to T2DM, when comparing the healthy controls to the whole diabetic group, odds ratio (OR) = 1.899, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.149 - 3.136), p = 0.011. This association was also significant between healthy controls and DM ? DN OR = 1.997 (1.079 - 3.699), p = 0.026 as well as between healthy controls and DM + DN OR = 1.818 (1.016 - 3.253), p = 0.042. However there was no significant association of XbaI polymorphism with DN when comparing DM ? DN to DM + DN OR = 0.910 (0.474 - 1.747), p = 0.777. Conclusion: XbaI T allele is associated with increased susceptibility to T2DM, but not to development of DN. Further studies are needed to replicate such findings.

Silent Cerebral Infarctions in Type II Diabetes Mellitus Patients;Could Brain MRI Be a Routine Investigation?

Objective: To study the prevalence of silent cerebral infarction in Type II diabetes mellitus. Patients and Methods: The study was a prospective on 80 patients recruited from neurology, endocrine outpatient clinics. Patients were type II diabetics as described by the American Diabetes Association, 2011 criteria. All patients underwent full metabolic profiles to diagnose diabetes mellitus and MRI brain scans to detect cerebral infarction. Results: Silent cerebral infarctions were detected in 60% of patients (48/80 patients) predominately along periventricular white matter area and subcortical areas (Basal ganglia, Thalamus). Conclusion: Asymptomatic Type II diabetes mellitus patients could have vascular cerebral changes without neurological symptoms. MRI brain scans could be recommended as routine diagnosis (if possible) for early cerebral infarct detection in type II diabetic patients.

Interplanting Some Soybean Cultivars with Mandarin Trees in Sandy Soil

Two-year field experiments were carried out at El-Kassasen Horticultural Research Station, Agricultural Research Center (ARC), Ismailia government, Egypt, during 2018 and 2019 summer seasons to evaluate some soybean cultivars for interplanting with mandarin trees to achieve high productivity of both crops, land usage and profitability under sandy soil conditions. The treatments were the combinations of two cropping systems (interplanting and solid cultures) and five soybean cultivars (Giza 21, Giza 22, Giza 35, Giza 82 and Giza 111). A strip plot design with three replications was used. Interplanting soybean cultivar Giza 22 with mandarin trees gave a higher total count of rhizobia in rhizosphere of mandarin roots after 75 days from soybean sowing than the other treatments in both seasons. The highest fruit weight and volume, total soluble solids (T.S.S.), fruit yields per tree and per ha were obtained by growing soybean cultivar Giza 22 or Giza 111 with mandarin compared with the other treatments in both seasons. With respect to soybean crop, interplanting soybean with mandarin trees decreased percentages of light intensity at the middle and bottom of the plant, chlorophylls a and b, as well as, plant dry weight after 75 days from soybean sowing compared with those of solid culture in both seasons. Soybean cultivars Giza 22 and Giza 82 had higher light intensity at the middle and bottom of the plant, as well as chlorophyll a, meanwhile soybean cultivars Giza 22 and Giza 111 had higher plant dry weight than the other soybean cultivars after 75 days from soybean sowing in both seasons. Soybean cultivar Giza 22 and Giza 111 had higher plant dry weight than the other soybean cultivars under interplanting and solid plantings in both seasons. Interplanting soybean with mandarin trees decreased soybean seed yield and its attributes compared with soybean solid culture in both seasons. Background: Paracetamol exerts toxic effects on liver cells through its metabolism into N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone imine (NAPQI), which is detoxified by conjugation with cellular glutathione (GSH). Once GSH is depleted, NAPQI stimulates a range of oxidative reactions that result in cell necrosis. The aim of the present investigation is to find a new strategy that would selectively protect normal hepatic tissues and sensitize liver cancer cells to the toxic effects of paracetamol or its metabolite. This may lead to the development of a targeted therapy for liver cancer. Methods: The anti-proliferative effects of paracetamol and buthionine sulfoximine BSO (a glutathione depleting agent) alone and in combination on the liver cancer cells HepG2 and normal rat hepatocytes were investigated by sulphorhodamine-B assay. Effects on cell cycle regulation and induction of apoptosis were tested by flow cytometry. The level of prostaglandin expression was measured by ELISA. Results: The present study showed that both agents alone or in combination have anti-proliferative effects on both cell types. Surprisingly, BSO showed a cytoprotective effects on normal hepatocytes treated with high concentrations (1.75 and 2 mM) of paracetamol. This was confirmed by cell cycle analysis that recorded decreased fraction of sub-G1 cells indicating reduction of apoptosis in normal hepatocytes. Analysis of prostaglandin E2 revealed differential effects of paracetamol on normal and liver cancer cells. A significant increase in PGE2 level over the control was observed in normal hepatocytes whereas a significant decrease was seen in HepG2 cells after treatment with paracetamol. Conclusion: These results indicate that combination of paracetamol/BSO has differential effects on liver cancer cells and normal hepatocytes, which opens the avenue for a new effective and selective combination for management of liver cancer.
