The novel Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has begun in China and is still affecting thousands of patient livesworldwide daily.AlthoughChest X-ray and Computed Tomography are the gold standardmedical imaging modalities for diagnosing potentially infected COVID-19 cases,applying Ultrasound(US)imaging technique to accomplish this crucial diagnosing task has attracted many physicians recently.In this article,we propose two modified deep learning classifiers to identify COVID-19 and pneumonia diseases in US images,based on generative adversarial neural networks(GANs).The proposed image classifiers are a semi-supervised GAN and a modifiedGANwith auxiliary classifier.Each one includes a modified discriminator to identify the class of the US image using semi-supervised learning technique,keeping its main function of defining the“realness”of tested images.Extensive tests have been successfully conducted on public dataset of US images acquired with a convex US probe.This study demonstrated the feasibility of using chest US images with two GAN classifiers as a new radiological tool for clinical check of COVID-19 patients.The results of our proposed GAN models showed that high accuracy values above 91.0%were obtained under different sizes of limited training data,outperforming other deep learning-based methods,such as transfer learning models in the recent studies.Consequently,the clinical implementation of our computer-aided diagnosis of US-COVID-19 is the future work of this study.

Lightweight deep convolutional neural networks(CNNs)present a good solution to achieve fast and accurate image-guided diagnostic procedures of COVID-19 patients.Recently,advantages of portable Ultrasound(US)imaging such as simplicity and safe procedures have attracted many radiologists for scanning suspected COVID-19 cases.In this paper,a new framework of lightweight deep learning classifiers,namely COVID-LWNet is proposed to identify COVID-19 and pneumonia abnormalities in US images.Compared to traditional deep learning models,lightweight CNNs showed significant performance of real-time vision applications by using mobile devices with limited hardware resources.Four main lightweight deep learning models,namely MobileNets,ShuffleNets,MENet and MnasNet have been proposed to identify the health status of lungs using US images.Public image dataset(POCUS)was used to validate our proposed COVID-LWNet framework successfully.Three classes of infectious COVID-19,bacterial pneumonia,and the healthy lung were investigated in this study.The results showed that the performance of our proposed MnasNet classifier achieved the best accuracy score and shortest training time of 99.0%and 647.0 s,respectively.This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using our proposed COVID-LWNet framework as a new mobilebased radiological tool for clinical diagnosis of COVID-19 and other lung diseases.

Leptin influences estrogen metabolism and increases DNA adduct formation in breast cancer cells

Objective: The elevated incidence of obesity has been paralleled with higher risks of breast cancer. High adiposity increases leptin secretion from adipose tissue, which in turn increases cancer cell proliferation. The interplay between leptin and estrogen is one of the mechanisms through which leptin influences breast carcinogenesis. An unbalanced estrogen metabolism increases the formations of catechol estrogen quinones, DNA adducts, and cancer mutations. This study aims to investigate the effect of leptin on some estrogen metabolic enzymes and DNA adduction in breast cancer cells.Methods: High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) was performed to analyze the DNA adducts 4-OHE1[E2]-1-N3 adenine and 4-OHE1[E2]-1-N7 guanine. Reporter gene assay, real time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction(real time RT-PCR), and Western blot were used to assess the expression of estrogen metabolizing genes and enzymes: Cytochrome P-4501B1(CYP1B1), Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-quinone oxidoreductase1(NQO1), and Catechol-O-methyl transferase(COMT).Results: Leptin significantly increased the DNA adducts 4-OHE1[E2]-1-N3 adenine and 4-OHE1[E2]-1-N7 guanine.Furthermore, leptin significantly upregulated CYP1B1 promoter activity and protein expression. The luciferase promoter activities of NQO1 and m RNA levels were significantly reduced. Moreover, leptin greatly reduced the reporter activities of the COMT-P1 and COMT-P2 promoters and diminished the protein expression of COMT.Conclusions: Leptin increases DNA adduct levels in breast cancer cells partly by affecting key genes and enzymes involved in estrogen metabolism. Thus, increased focus should be directed toward leptin and its effects on the estrogen metabolic pathway as an effective approach against breast cancer.

BACKGROUND Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis-related cirrhosis is one of the liver complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and reported to be a risk factor for developing hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).A reliable screening biomarker of liver cirrhosis(LC)and HCC among T2DM patients is important to reduce the morbidity and mortality of this disease.MicroRNA(miRNA)is considered a key player in HCC and T2DM,and it might be a hidden culprit in diabetes-associated HCC,making it a promising reliable prognostic tool.AIM To investigate the signature of serum miRNAs as early biomarkers for the screening of HCC among diabetic patients.METHODS Expression profiles of miRNAs in serum samples of diabetic LC and diabetic HCC patients were assessed using Illumina sequencing;then,RT-qPCR was used to validate significantly altered miRNAs between the two groups.Candidate miRNAs were tested in serum samples of 200 T2DM patients,270 LC patients,200 HCC patients,and 225 healthy control subjects.Additionally,receiver operating characteristic(ROC)analysis,with area under the curve(AUC),was performed to assess the diagnostic performance of the screened miRNAs for discriminating HCC from LC and nonmalignant patients(LC+T2DM).RESULTS Expression of the sequenced miRNAs in serum was different in HCC vs LCpositive T2DM patients.Two miRNAs(miR-34a,miR-221)were significantly upregulated and five miRNAs(miR-16,miR-23-3p,miR-122-5p,miR-198,miR-199a-3p)were significantly down-regulated in HCC compared to LC patients.Analysis of ROC curve demonstrated that the combination of these seven miRNAs can be used as a reliable biomarker for detection of HCC in diabetic patients,as it could identify HCC with high diagnostic accuracy in diabetic LC patients(AUC=0.993)and in diabetic nonmalignant patients(AUC=0.961).CONCLUSION This study validates a panel of serum miRNAs that can be used as a reliable noninvasive screening biomarker of HCC among T2DM cirrhotic and noncirrhotic patients.The study recommends further research to shed light on a possible role of

Validation of a serum microRNA panel as biomarkers for early diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma post-hepatitis C infection in Egyptian patients

AIM To investigate the prospective importance of serum micro(mi)RNAs(mi R-125 b, mi R-138 b, mi R-1269, mi R-214-5p, mi R-494, mi R375 and mi R-145) as early biomarkers for the diagnosis of hepatitis C virus(HCV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS Two-hundred and fifty HCV4 a patients, 224 HCV4 aHCC patients, and 84 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Expression levels of mi R214-5p, mi R-125 b, mi R-1269 and mi R-375 were quantified using quantitative real-time PCR.RESULTS Expression of the selected mi RNAs in serum wassignificantly lower in HCC patients than in the healthy controls, except for mi R-1269 and mi R-494. There was a significant difference between HCC and HCV patients, in particular for HCC and late stage fibrosis, rather than HCV patients and early fibrosis. It is obvious that mi R-1269 was significantly upregulated in HCC cases compared to hepatic fibrosis cases. Each mi RNA can show HCC progression. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the tested panel of mi RNAs(mi R214-5p, mi R-125 b, mi R-1269 and mi R-375) represent accurate and specific indictors of HCC development.CONCLUSION This study presents a panel of mi RNAs with strong power as putative diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for HCV-induced HCC. Moreover, mi R-214-5p and mi R-1269 could be considered as early biomarkers for tracking the progress of liver fibrosis to HCC.

From appropriation to formal intervention:An analytical framework for understanding the appropriation process in residual spaces of Cairo

The paper addresses the issue of how residual spaces are intervened upon through formal and informal processes.It argues that a profound understanding for the dynamics of informal interventions,denoted by appropriation,could enhance the performance of their formal peers.Adopting a qualitative approach,the paper departs from Lefebvre's unitary theory of space and arrives at an analytical framework that helps to understand the appropriation processes in residual spaces.It,then,attempts to empirically challenge the applicability of this framework through analyzing a Cairene residual space that has undergone two cycles of intervention:a formal and informal one.

In recent days,internet of things is widely implemented in Wireless Sensor Network(WSN).It comprises of sensor hubs associated together through the WSNs.The WSNis generally affected by the power in battery due to the linked sensor nodes.In order to extend the lifespan of WSN,clustering techniques are used for the improvement of energy consumption.Clustering methods divide the nodes in WSN and form a cluster.Moreover,it consists of unique Cluster Head(CH)in each cluster.In the existing system,Soft-K means clustering techniques are used in energy consumption in WSN.The soft-k means algorithm does not work with the large-scale wireless sensor networks,therefore it causes reliability and energy consumption problems.To overcome this,the proposed Load-Balanced Clustering conjunction with Coyote Optimization with Fuzzy Logic(LBC-COFL)algorithm is used.The main objective is to perform the lifespan by balancing the gateways with the load of less energy.The proposed algorithm is evaluated using the metrics such as energy consumption,throughput,central tendency,network lifespan,and total energy utilization.

This paper presents a novel Simulink models with an evaluation study of more widely used On-Line Maximum Power Point tracking(MPPT)techniques for Photo-Voltaic based Battery Storage Systems(PV-BSS).To have a full comparative study in terms of the dynamic response,battery state of charge(SOC),and oscillations around the Maximum Power Point(MPP)of the PV-BSS to variations in climate conditions,these techniques are simulated in Matlab/Simulink.The introduced methodologies are classified into two types;the first type is conventional hill-climbing techniques which are based on instantaneous PV data measurements such as Perturb&Observe and Incremental Conductance techniques.The second type is a novel proposed methodology is based on using solar irradiance and cell temperature measurements with pre-build Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System(ANFIS)model to predict DC–DC converter optimum duty cycle to track MPP.Then evaluation study is introduced for conventional and proposed On-Line MPPT techniques.This comparative study can be useful in specifying the appropriateness of the MPPT techniques for PV-BSS.Also the introduced model can be used as a valued reference model for future research related to Soft Computing(SC)MPPT techniques.A significant improvement of SOC is achieved by the proposed model and methodology with high accuracy and lower oscillations.

Bayesian belief-based model for reliability improvement of the digital reactor protection system

The digital reactor protection system(RPS)is one of the most important digital instrumentation and control(I&C)systems utilized in nuclear power plants(NPPs).It ensures a safe reactor trip when the safety-related parameters violate the operational limits and conditions of the reactor.Achieving high reliability and availability of digital RPS is essential to maintaining a high degree of reactor safety and cost savings.The main objective of this study is to develop a general methodology for improving the reliability of the RPS in NPP,based on a Bayesian Belief Network(BBN)model.The structure of BBN models is based on the incorporation of failure probability and downtime of the RPS I&C components.Various architectures with dual-state nodes for the I&C components were developed for reliability-sensitive analysis and availability optimization of the RPS and to demonstrate the effect of I&C components on the failure of the entire system.A reliability framework clarified as a reliability block diagram transformed into a BBN representation was constructed for each architecture to identify which one will fit the required reliability.The results showed that the highest availability obtained using the proposed method was 0.9999998.There are 120 experiments using two common component importance measures that are applied to define the impact of I&C modules,which revealed that some modules are more risky than others and have a larger effect on the failure of the digital RPS.

The developments of multi-core systems(MCS)have considerably improved the existing technologies in thefield of computer architecture.The MCS comprises several processors that are heterogeneous for resource capacities,working environments,topologies,and so on.The existing multi-core technology unlocks additional research opportunities for energy minimization by the use of effective task scheduling.At the same time,the task scheduling process is yet to be explored in the multi-core systems.This paper presents a new hybrid genetic algorithm(GA)with a krill herd(KH)based energy-efficient scheduling techni-que for multi-core systems(GAKH-SMCS).The goal of the GAKH-SMCS tech-nique is to derive scheduling tasks in such a way to achieve faster completion time and minimum energy dissipation.The GAKH-SMCS model involves a multi-objectivefitness function using four parameters such as makespan,processor utilization,speedup,and energy consumption to schedule tasks proficiently.The performance of the GAKH-SMCS model has been validated against two datasets namely random dataset and benchmark dataset.The experimental outcome ensured the effectiveness of the GAKH-SMCS model interms of makespan,pro-cessor utilization,speedup,and energy consumption.The overall simulation results depicted that the presented GAKH-SMCS model achieves energy effi-ciency by optimal task scheduling process in MCS.
