In addition to their.value as cer.al gr.ins, wheat (Tr.ticum aestivum L.) and tr.ticale (× Tr.ticosecale Wittmack) ar. impor.ant cool-season annual for.ges and cover.cr.ps. Year.ing steer.(Bos taur.s) per.or.ance was compar.d in the spr.ng following autumn establishment as for.age cover.cr.ps after.soybean [Glycine max (L.) Mer..] gr.in har.est. r.plicated pastur.s (0.4 ha) wer. no-till seeded in thr.e consecutive year. into soybean stubble in autumn, fer.ilized, and gr.zed the following spr.ng near.Ithaca, NE, USA. Each pastur. (n = 3) was continuously stocked in spr.ng with four.year.ing steer. (380 ± 38 kg) for.17, 32, and 28 d in 2005, 2006, and 2007, r.spectively. In 2005, aver.ge daily gain (ADG) for.steer. gr.zing tr.ticale exceeded the ADG for.wheat by 0.31 kghd-1d-1. In 2006, wheat ADG exceeded that for.tr.ticale by 0.12 kghd-1d-1. In 2007, steer. gr.zing wheat lost weight, while steer. gr.zing tr.ticale gained 0.20 kghd-1d-1. Based on the 3-year.aver.ge animal gains valued at $1.32 kg-1, mean net r.tur. ($ ha-1 yr.sup>-1) was $62.15 for.tr.ticale and $22.55 for.wheat. Since these gr.zed cover.cr.ps pr.vide ecosystem ser.ices in addition to for.ge, gr.zing could be viewed as a mechanism for.r.cover.ng costs and adds additional value to the system. Based on this 3-year.gr.zing tr.al, tr.ticale was super.or.to wheat and likely will pr.vide the most stable beef year.ing per.or.ance acr.ss year. with var.able weather.for.the wester. Cor.belt USA.
