Objective:To investigate the prevalence of methicillin-resistant staphylococci(MRS)which is a potencial risk factor of transmission between animals and humans in different types of horses(harness racing-horses,breeding mares and riding-horses)and to compare the antimicrobial resistance of the ***:A total of 191 healthy horses,housed at different locations of the Campania Region(Italy),were included in the *** swab samples were collected from each nostril of the *** mecA gene was detected by a nested PCR *** susceptibility was tested for each ***:MRS was isolated from nasal samples of 68/191(35.6%;95%CI:28.9%-42.9%)healthy *** isolates were coagulase-negative with the exception of two coagulase-positive MRS strains,identified as Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.2/83(2.4%;95%,CI:0.4%-9.2%).Interestingly,both coagulase-positive MRS isolates were from harness *** horses also presented a significantly higher positivity for MRS(53.3%;95%CI:40.1%-66.1%)than the breeding mares and riding-horses *** susceptibility testing showed difference between isolates due to different origins except for an almost common high resistance to aminopenicillins,such as ampicillin and ***:It can be concluded that harness racing-horses may act as a significant reservoir of MRS as compared to breeding mares and riding-horses.

An update on microbiological causes of canine otitis externa in Campania Region,Italy

Objective: To update the recent knowledge of the microbiological causes of canine otitis externa in Campania Region(Italy) and the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the isolated ***: A total of 122 dogs were examined by otoscopy, and auricular swab samples were collected from both ears in 74 dogs presenting clinical bilateral otitis and from single ears in 48 dogs displaying clinical unilateral otitis. Cytological examination,bacteriological analysis and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were ***: Thirty-one out of 122 dogs were positive for yeast species(25.4%, 95% confidence interval(CI): 18.2%–34.2%) with a higher prevalence of Malassezia pachydermatis(21/31 isolates, 67.7%, CI: 48.5%–82.7%), and a total of 91 out of 122 dogs were positive for bacterial species(74.6%; CI: 65.8%–81.8%) with a higher prevalence of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius(45/143 isolates, 31.5%, CI: 24.1%–39.8%). These results are the first description of Streptococcus agalactiae-associated otitis. The yeasts isolated showed high levels of susceptibility to all antifungal agents tested; on the contrary all the isolated bacterial strains were highly resistant to at least four out of ten antimicrobial classes. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria showed high resistance to amoxicillin/clavulanate and kanamycin hence they are not recommended as initial empirical therapy for the otitis ***: This update illustrates an increase in antibiotic resistances providing an insight into the current knowledge of the therapeutic procedures followed on canine otitis externa in Italy. It also emphasizes the importance of considering the results of the microbiological and sensitivity tests to decide on an appropriate antibiotic therapy.

First reported in 1976,hepatic angiomyolipoma(HAML)is a rare mesenchymal liver tumor occurring mostly in middle-aged *** of the liver mass is often incidental on abdominal imaging due to the frequent absence of specific *** 10%of HAMLs are associated with tuberous sclerosis *** contains variable proportions of blood vessels,smooth muscle cells and adipose tissue,which renders radiological diagnosis *** express positivity for HMB-45 and actin,thus these tumors are integrated into the group of perivascular epithelioid cell ***,a HAML appears on magnetic resonance imaging(or computed tomography scan)as a hypervascular solid tumor with fatty areas and with washout,and can easily be misdiagnosed as other liver tumors,particularly hepatocellular *** therapeutic strategy is not clearly defined,but surgical resection is indicated for symptomatic patients,for tumors showing an aggressive pattern(i.e.,changes in size on imaging or high proliferation activity and atypical epithelioid pattern on liver biopsy),for large(>5 cm)biopsy-proven HAML,and if doubts remain on imaging or *** management may be justified in other conditions,since most cases follow a benign clinical *** summary,the correct diagnosis of HAML is challenging on imaging and relies mainly on pathological findings.

The design of new heterogeneous photooxygenation systems able to employ visible light,oxygen,mild temperatures,and solvent with a low environmental impact has been investigated. In particular,the heterogenization of decatungstate (W10O4-32),a polyoxometalate with photocatalytic activity in oxidation reactions,has been carried out in polymeric membranes of polyvinylidenefluoride. The polymeric catalytic membranes prepared by phase inversion technique have been successfully applied in the aerobic mineralization of phenol in water,which was used as an example of organic pollutant. In order to evaluate the effect of the polymeric environment on the overall catalyst behavior,we have also heterogenized the decatungstate (opportunely functionalized) in perfluorinated membrane made of Hyflon. The photocatalytic composite membranes are characterized by different and tuneable properties depending on the nature of the polymeric micro-environment,in which the catalyst is confined. Moreover,the selective separation function of the membrane results in enhanced performance in comparison with homogeneous reactions.

The presence of green spaces within city centres has been recognized as a valuable component of the city *** provides a variety of benefits including energy saving,improved air quality,reduced noise pollution,decreased ambient temperature and psychological *** also shows that the amount of vegetation,known as‘greenness’,in densely populated areas,can also be an indicator of the relative wealth of a ***‘grey-green divide’,the contrast between built-up areas with a dominant grey colour and green spaces,is taken as a proxy indicator of sustainable management of cities and planning of urban *** and continuous assessment of greenness in cities is therefore essential for monitoring progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal *** availability of multi-temporal greenness information from Landsat data archives together with data derived from the city centres database of the Global Human Settlement Layer(GHSL)initiative,offers a unique perspective to quantify and analyse changes in greenness across 10,323 urban centres all around the *** this research,we assess differences between greenness within and outside the built-up area for all the urban centres described by the city centres database of the *** also analyse changes in the amount of green space over time considering changes in the built-up areas in the periods 1990,2000 and *** results show an overall trend of increased greenness between 1990 and 2014 in most *** effect of greening is observed also for most of the 32 world *** conclude that using simple yet effective approaches exploiting open and free global data it is possible to provide quantitative information on the greenness of cities and its changes over *** information is of direct interest for urban planners and decision-makers to mitigate urban related environmental and social impacts.

Investigation of compensatory postures with videofluoromanometry in dysphagia patients

AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of head compensatory postures to ensure safe oropharyngeal transit. METHODS: A total of 321 dysphagia patients were enrolled and assessed with videofluoromanometry (VFM). The dysphagia patients were classified as follows: safe transit; penetration without aspiration; aspiration before, during or after swallowing; multiple aspirations and no transit. The patients with aspiration or no transit were tested with VFM to determine whether compensatory postures could correct their swallowing disorder. RESULTS: VFM revealed penetration without aspiration in 71 patients (22.1%); aspiration before swallowing in 17 patients (5.3%); aspiration during swallowing in 32 patients (10%); aspiration after swallowing in 21 patients (6.5%); multiple aspirations in six patients (1.9%); no transit in five patients (1.6%); and safe transit in 169 patients (52.6%). Compensatory postures guaranteed a safe transit in 66/75 (88%) patients with aspiration or no transit. A chin-down posture achieved a safe swallow in 42/75 (56%) patients, a head-turned posture in 19/75 (25.3%) and a hyperextended head posture in 5/75 (6.7%). The compensatory postures were not effective in 9/75 (12%) cases. CONCLUSION: VFM allows the speech-language therapist to choose the most effective compensatory posture without a trial-and-error process and check the effectiveness of the posture.

Data on global population distribution are a strategic resource currently in high demand in an age of new Development Agendas that call for universal inclusiveness of ***,quality,detail,and age of census data varies significantly by country and suffers from shortcomings that propagate to derived population grids and their *** this work,the improved capabilities of recent remote sensing-derived global settlement data to detect and mitigate major discrepancies with census data is *** layers mapping builtup presence were used to revise census units deemed as‘unpopulated’and to harmonize population distribution along *** procedures to detect and mitigate these anomalies,while minimizing changes to census geometry,preserving the regional distribution of population,and the overall counts were developed,tested,and *** two procedures employed for the detection of deficiencies in global census data obtained high rates of true positives,after verification and *** also show that the targeted anomalies were significantly mitigated and are encouraging for further uses of free and open geospatial data derived from remote sensing in complementing and improving conventional sources of fundamental population statistics.

Influence of age on outcome of total laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease

AIM: To demonstrate that age does not influence the choice of treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). We hypothesized that the outcome of total fun-doplication in patients > 65 years is similar to that of patients aged ≤ 65 ***: Four hundred and twenty consecu-tive patients underwent total laparoscopic fun-doplication for GERD. Three hundred and fifty-five patients were younger than 65 years (group Y), and 65 patients were 65 years or older (group E). The following elements were considered: pres-ence, duration, and severity of GERD symptoms; presence of a hiatal hernia; manometric evalu- ation, 24 h pH-monitoring data, duration of operation; incidence of complications; and length of hospital stay. RESULTS: Elderly patients more often had atypical symptoms of GERD and at manometric evaluation had a higher rate of impaired esophageal peristalsis in compari-son with younger patients. A mild intensity of heartburn often leads physicians to underestimate the severity of erosive esophagitis. The duration of the operation was similar between the two groups. The incidence of intra-operative and postoperative complications was low and the difference was not statistically significant between the two groups. An excellent outcome was observed in 92.9% young patients and 91.9% elderly patients. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic antireflux surgery is a safe and effective treatment for GERD even in elderly pa-tients, warranting low morbidity and mortality rates and a significant improvement of symptoms comparable to younger patients.
