Apoptosis inhibitor of macrophages （AIMs）, a homologue of human Spa, is a mouse soluble member of the scavenger receptor cysteine-rich superfamily （SRCR-SF）. This family integrates a group of proteins expressed by innate and adaptive immune cells for which no unifying function has yet been described. Pleiotropic functions have been ascribed to AIM, from viability support in lymphocytes during thymic selection to lipid metabolism and anti-inflammatory effects in autoimmune pathologies. In the present report, the pathogen binding properties of AIM have been explored. By using a recombinant form of AIM （rAIM） expressed in mammalian cells, it is shown that this protein is able to bind and aggregate Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as pathogenic and saprophytic fungal species. Importantly, endogenous AIM from mouse serum also binds to microorganisms and secretion of AIM was rapidly induced in mouse spleen macrophages following exposure to conserved microbial cell wall components. Cytokine release induced by well-known bacterial and fungal Toll-like receptor （TLR） ligands on mouse splenocytes was also inhibited in the presence of rAIM. Furthermore, mouse models of pathogen-associated molecular patterns （PAMPs）-induced septic shock of bacterial and fungal origin showed that serum AIM levels changed in a time-dependent manner. Altogether, these data suggest that AIM plays a general homeostatic role by supporting innate humoral defense during pathogen aggression.

Malnutrition occurs frequently in patients with cancer.Indeed,a variety of nutritional and tumorrelated factors must be taken into account in these patients.Recognizing this relationship,we aimed to prospectively evaluate the risk factors that influence weight loss in patients undergoing radiotherapy with oral nutritional supplementation and dietetic counseling.Weight loss of 74 patients during radiotherapy and 1 month after treatment was analyzed.Parameters such as age,gender,tumor location,tumor stage,Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(ECOG PS)score,and the use of chemotherapy were analyzed to evaluate their influence on weight loss.All patients underwent oral nutritional supplementation and dietetic counseling.Forty-six(65.7%)patients lost weight,with a mean weight loss of(4.73±3.91)kg,during radiotherapy.At 1 month after treatment,45(66.2%)patients lost weight,presenting a mean weight loss of(4.96±4.04)kg,corresponding to a(6.84±5.24)%net reduction from their baseline weight.Head and neck cancer patients had a mean weight loss of(3.25±5.30)kg,whereas the remaining patients had a mean weight loss of(0.64±2.39)kg(P=0.028)during radiotherapy.In the multivariate analysis,the head and neck tumor location(P=0.005),use of chemotherapy(P=0.011),and ECOG PS score of 2-3(P=0.026)were considered independent risk factors.Nutritional status and parameters,such as tumor location(especially the head and neck),the use of chemotherapy,and the ECOG PS score,should be evaluated before radiotherapy because these factors can influence weight loss during radiotherapy and 1 month after treatment.

The electric field created in a curvature energy sensor on air microparticles is used to obtain a temperature-humidity map G:M→SO(2)∪F,by stereo-radially of the sensor design to detect and measure the temperature and humidity of certain local region of the environment space.Likewise,considering the curvature energy as the deviation of any field interaction,even the obstruction to its proper flow,is designed and created a humidity-resistor sensor to the control and optimization of humidity in a space with different gradients of humidity,pressure and temperature in a radial detection and measuring.Then the sensing problem is a problem of free boundary conditions where is satisfied an energy functional of norm ||ξ||_(2),to curvature functions κ,that satisfy in the temperature and humidity function ξ,the change limit condition ξ|_(∂Ω)≤2πξ(r).This carries to that the temperature-humidity sensor must be designed on a length gauge to measure the changes of humidity and temperature in the space.

K＋ uptake in the high-affinity range of concentrations and its components have been widely studied. In Arabidposis thaliana, the AtHAK5 transporter and the AtAKT1 channel have been shown to be the main transport proteins involved in this process. Here, we study the role of these two systems under two important stress conditions： low K＋ supply or the presence of salinity. T-DNA insertion lines disrupting AtHAK5 and A tAKT1 are employed for long-term experi- ments that allow physiological characterization of the mutant lines. We found that AtHAK5 is required for K＋ absorption necessary to sustain plant growth at low K＋ in the absence as well as in the presence of salinity. Salinity greatly reduced AtHAK5 transcript levels and promoted AtAKTl-mediated K＋ efflux, resulting in an important impairment of K＋ nutrition. Although having a limited capacity, AtHAK5 plays a maj.r role for K＋ acquisition from low K＋ concentrations in the presence of salinity.

The post-embryonic growth of the Arabidopsis thaliana root system can be modified by different types of stress,such as sublethal concentrations of metals,which may induce the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS).In this study,the effects of different concentrations of potassium chromate(K_(2)CrO_(4))on the distribution and relative quantity of hydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))were determined in primary and adventitious roots in A.thaliana HyPer line seedlings.This line has a biosensor that specifically reports H_(2)O_(2) levels within tissues as fluorescence.Primary root growth was inhibited at 100μM Cr(VI);in contrast,adventitious root formation was induced over the main root growth axis.These structures proliferated from 100-160μM Cr(VI),and much higher concentrations(180-200μM)of K_(2)CrO_(4) were required to affect their growth.The H_(2)O_(2) distributions were observed in the columella and lateral root cap of primary roots of plants grown in medium lacking dichromate,but following the development of toxicity symptoms,H_(2)O_(2) changed its distribution to the meristem and differentiation zones.Conversely,adventitious roots had comparable H_(2)O_(2) distribution patterns in untreated plants and those exposed to Cr(VI)supplementation.Thus,differential H_(2)O_(2) distribution correlates with the resistance of adventitious roots,but not primary roots,to dichromate and underlies cell reorganization at the apex to support growth.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent tumours,but with improved treatment and early detection,its prognosis has greatly improved in recent years.However,when the tumour is locally advanced at diagnosis or if there is local recurrence,it is more difficult to perform a complete tumour resection,and there may be a residual macroscopic tumour.In this paper,we review the literature on residual macroscopic tumour resections,concerning both locally advanced primary tumours and recurrences,evaluating the main problems encountered,the treatments applied,the prognosis and future perspectives in this field.

Acral lesions in a pediatric population during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case series of 36 patients from a single hospital in Spain

Background To describe the cutaneous acral findings in a pediatric population noticed during this pandemic.Methods A retrospective descriptive study was performed collecting data on 36 patients under 14 years old,presenting suspicious acral skin manifestations for coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).Results Patients were mostly male(63.8%).The mean age was 11.11 years.66.67%of patients showed erythematous papules,and 44.44%purpuric macules.Feet were aifected in 97.22%of patients and hands in 5.55%.Lesions were asymptomatic in 50%of patients.30.55%of patients showed extracutaneous findings,preceding skin lesions in 12.62 days.Seven patients underwent specific severe acute coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)testing;all of these patients tested negative.Conclusions The association between these symptoms and SARS-CoV-2 remains unclear.We recommend using these manifestations as a sign of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children.This could lead to the examination of asymptomatic and mildly symptomatic children so that contagions may be avoided.
