Linking forest diversity and tree health： preliminary insights from a large-scale survey in Italy

Forest health is currently assessed in Europe （ICP Forests monitoring program）. Crown defoliation and dieback, tree mortality, and pathogenic damage are the main aspects considered in tree health assessment. The worsening of environmental conditions （i.e., increase of temperature and drought events） may cause large-spatial scale tree mortality and forest decline. However, the role of stand features, including tree species assemblage and diversity as factors that modify environmental impacts, is poorly considered. The present contribution reanalyses the historical dataset of crown conditions in Italian forests from ] 997 to 2014 to identify ecological and structural factors that influence tree crown defoliation, highlighting in a special manner the role of tree diversity. The effects of tree diversity were explored using the entire data set through multivariate cluster analyses and on individual trees, analysing the influence of the neighbouring tree diversity and identity at the local （neighbour） level. Preliminary results suggest that each tree species shows a specific behaviour in relation to crown defoliation, and the distribution of crown defoliation across Italian forests reflects the distribution of the main forest types and their ecological equilibrium with the environment. The potentiality and the problems connected to the possible extension of this analysis at a more general level （European and North American） were discussed.

Human presence and activities have profoundly altered animals’habitats,exposing them to greater risks but also providing new opportunities and *** animals’capacity to effectively navigate and strike a balance between risks and benefts is crucial for their survival in the Anthropocene *** foxes(Vulpes vulpes),adept urban dwellers,exhibit behavioral plasticity in human-altered *** investigated variations in detection frequency on trail cameras and the behavioral responses(explorative,bold,and fearful)of wild red foxes living along an urbanization gradient when exposed to a metal bin initially presented clean and then flled with anthropogenic *** fox populations displayed an increased interest and similar explorative behavioral responses toward the anthropogenic food source,irrespective of the urbanization *** no impact on explorative behaviors,foxes in more urbanized areas initially showed heightened fear toward the empty bin,indicating increased apprehension toward novel ***,this fear diminished over time,and in the presence of food,urban foxes displayed slightly reduced fear compared with their less urban *** results highlight foxes’potential for adaptability to human landscapes,additionally underscoring the nuanced interplay of fear and explorative behavioral response of populations living along the urbanization gradient.

Exosomes have been recognized as extracellular vesicles that mediate systemic information exchange and long-distance interactions between cells.1 Their functions are all highly reliant on systemic biological distribution so that it is possible to promote the biological effects for therapy by accurately manipulating exosome ***,given that the mechanisms for regulating the exosome biodistribution are unclear,it is challengeable to achieve the manipulation of exosome biodistribution by regulating molecular ***,Liu et al.2 reported a vesicle shuttle(VS),which was composed of a ferroferric oxide core,a silica shell,and a stimuli-cleavable poly(ethylene glycol)corona conjugated to two types of antibody(one against antigens on the exosomes of interest,and the other targeted to the recipient injured cells).2 They showed that the VS could effectively collect,transport,and release circulating exosomes to the designated areas inside the organism.

The effects of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), lavender (Lavandula angustifola), oregano (Origanum vulgare) and savory (Satureja montana) extracts, alone and in mixtures, on lipid oxidation in cold-marinated shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) were studied. During the two-month screening period using the thiobarbituric reactive substances assay (TBARS) the most effective extract mixture (rosemary:oregano:lavender extracts in 3:2:1 ratio, ROL) was selected for the shelf-life study in pilot production of marinated shrimp to determine its effects on the quality characteristics of the final product. Degradation of the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaeonic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during 8 months of refrigerated storage, was inhibited in shrimp marinated with ROL compared to control samples. In addition, lower levels of total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA-N) were observed in shrimp treated with extracts while the TBARS values remained below the limit of 3 mu mol malondialdehyde (MDA)/100g during the 8-month shelf-life study period, whereas the control sample exceeded this value in the third month. The total number of aerobic mesophilic and psychrophilic microorganisms was reduced after marinating with extracts. The obtained results are promising with regard to the application of plant extracts, especially the tested ROL mixture, to extend the shelf-life of food products and to reduce lipid oxidation and microbial load in the food model.

AIM:To demonstrate a high prevalence of extraintestinal manifestations(EIMs)in a prospective populationbased cohort of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)patients at first diagnosis as well as during the early course of the ***:EIMs are common in patients with *** on the frequency of EIMs have mostly been assessed in patients from tertiary centers;however,data about the prevalence of EIMs at first diagnosis as well as factors influencing their incidence during the early course of disease from prospective population-based cohorts are *** present data of patients of our population-based"Oberpfalz cohort"(Bavaria,Germany)from first diagnosis(up to 3 mo after first diagnosis)as well as during the early course of the *** risk factors were assessed by calculating the relative risk(RR)as well as using logistic regression ***:In total,data of 257 newly diagnosed patients with IBD were evaluated[161 Crohn’s disease(CD),96 ulcerative colitis(UC)].Median duration of follow-up was 50 mo after first *** 63.4%of all patients(n=163),an EIM was diagnosed at any point during the observation *** first diagnosis,patients with CD had a significantly increased risk of an EIM[n=69(42.9%)]compared with UC patients[n=21(21.9%);P<0.001;RR=1.96;95%CI:1.30-2.98].Active smoking increased the risk of CD patients developing an EIM during the early course of the disease,but notably not of UC patients(P=0.046;RR=1.96;95%CI:1.01-3.79).In addition,using logistic regression analysis,the need for IBD-related surgery and a young age at first diagnosis were identified as risk factors for the development of an EIM in CD *** association with EIMs was found for the factors sex,localization of the disease and positive family history of *** contrast,no key factors which increased the risk of development of an EIM could be identified in UC ***:We found a high prevalence of EIM in this cohort at first diagnosis and during th
