Influence of climatic conditions,topography and soil attributes on the spatial distribution of site productivity index of the species rich forests of Jalisco,Mexico

This paper presents an approach based on field data to model the spatial distribution of the site productivity index （SPI） of the diverse forest types in Jalisco, Mexico and the response in SPI to site and cli-matic conditions. A linear regression model was constructed to test the hypothesis that site and climate variables can be used to predict the SPI of the major forest types in Jalisco. SPI varied significantly with topog-raphy （elevation, aspect and slope）, soil attributes （pH, sand and silt）, climate （temperature and precipitation zones） and forest type. The most important variable in the model was forest type, which accounted for 35% of the variability in SPI. Temperature and precipitation accounted for 8 to 9% of the variability in SPI while the soil attributes accounted for less than 4% of the variability observed in SPI. No significant differences were detected between the observed and predicted SPI for the individual forest types. The linear regression model was used to develop maps of the spatial variability in predicted SPI for the individual forest types in the state. The spatial site productivity models developed in this study provides a basis for understanding the complex relationship that exists between forest productivity and site and climatic conditions in the state. Findings of this study will assist resource managers in making cost-effective decisions about the management of individual forest types in the state of Jalisco, Mexico.

Empirical evaluation of confidence and prediction intervals for spatial models of forest structure in Jalisco,Mexico

In recent years there has been an increasing interest in developing spatial statistical models for data sets that are seemingly spatially *** lack of spatial structure makes it difficult,if not impossible to use optimal predictors such as ordinary kriging for modeling the spatial variability in the *** many instances,the data still contain a wealth of information that could be used to gain flexibility and precision in *** this paper we propose using a combination of regression analysis to describe the large-scale spatial variability in a set of survey data and a tree-based stratification design to enhance the estimation process of the small-scale spatial *** this approach,sample units（i.e.,pixel of a satellite image） are classified with respect to predictions of error attributes into homogeneous classes,and the classes are then used as strata in the stratified *** variables used as a basis of stratification included terrain data and satellite imagery.A decision rule was used to identify a tree size that minimized the error in estimating the variance of the mean response and prediction uncertainties at new spatial *** approach was applied to a set of n=937 forested plots from a state-wide inventory conducted in 2006 in the Mexican State of *** final models accounted for 62% to 82% of the variability observed in canopy closure（%）,basal area（m2·ha-1）,cubic volumes（m3·ha-1） and biomass（t·ha-1） on the sample *** spatial models provided unbiased estimates and when averaged over all sample units in the population,estimates of forest structure were very close to those obtained using classical estimates based on the sampling strategy used in the state-wide *** spatial models also provided unbiased estimates of model variances leading to confidence and prediction coverage rates close to the 0.95 nominal rate.

A highly acidic spill from one of the most important copper mines in the Americas (Buenavista del Cobre) occurred in Sonora, Mexico in August, 2014. 40,000 m3 of metals-enriched sulphate solution escaped into the Sonora River representing the worst ecological disaster in Mexican history. The spill affected the economy, water accessibility and the health of residents near the river. Despite the economic importance of mining in this area, no environmental assessment was undertaken. There is no information about the health impact of this event on the local population. The study assesses the health risk among children exposed to arsenic and mercury via groundwater in five communities located in a mining area into the Sonora River Basin, Mexico. Local drinking water from the localities was sampled one year after the spill and it was analyzed for arsenic and mercury by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry coupled with Hydride Generation (AAS/HG). Further, some of the traditional local foods were sampled and analyzed for the same elements. Results indicate that levels of arsenic in drinking water did not exceed the Mexican Norm (25 μg As/L) or the EPA Guideline (10 μg As/L). The concentrations of mercury exceeded the WHo and Mexican Legislation value (1.0 μg Hg/L). The Hazard Quotient (HQ) values for arsenic were >1 in 42% of children exposed and for mercury in 67% of the children. Foods concentrations contained in the ranges of 9.2 to 62.0 μg As/Kg and 0.28 to 42 μg Hg/Kg for arsenic and mercury respectively. These values are below the Codex Alimentarius limits. Children affected by mining activities are at risk of developing chronic diseases associated with low arsenic and mercury exposure via groundwater consumption, without consideration of the contribution from these metals by other important exposures routes.

Comparative study of quality of life after hospital-at-home or in-patient admission for acute decompensation of chronic heart failure

AIMS: Hospitalisation at home (HaH) achieves comparable health outcomes to conventional in-patient care, in terms of cost-effectiveness and quality of life. our objective was to assess the impact of episodes of acute decompensation of heart failure (ADCHF) on functional status and quality of life, in patients under HaH care compared with a matched group receiving conventional in-patient care at a Cardiology ward (CW). Methods: Randomised clinical trial in 71 patients with ADCHF attending the Emergency Department. Patients were either admitted to the hospital’s CW or to the HaH service. The functional status and health related quality of life (HRQoL) were assessed using the Barthel Index (BI) and the EQ-5D, Short Form-36 (SF-36) and Minnessota Living with Heart Failure (MLHFQ) questionnaires, administered at admission and, depending on the test, at discharge and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after discharge. Results: MLHFQ and SF-36 experienced significant improvement in most domains with respect to the initial values at discharge and 6 months after only in the HaH group;though by 12-months there were no significant differences. Barthel Index and EQ-5D value scores showed improvement with respect to initial values in both arms. The improvement could be appreciated in more components and for longer among the HaH patients. Conclusions: Functional independence and quality of life improve at discharge compared to admission, after both home-based and in-patient hospitalisation, outcomes being better in various respects over the first year of follow-up after hospital-at-home care.

Characterizing the diversity and structure of host–parasite communities is crucial to understandingtheir eco-evolutionary *** and related haemosporidian parasites are responsible forfitness loss and mortality in bird species ***,despite exhibiting the greatest ornithologicalbiodiversity,avian haemosporidians from Neotropical regions are quite ***,we analyze the genetic diversity of bird haemosporidian parasites(Plasmodium andHaemoproteus)in 1,336 individuals belonging to 206 bird species to explore for differences in diversityof parasite lineages and bird species across 5 well-differentiated Peruvian *** 70 different haemosporidian lineages infecting 74 bird *** showed that 25 out ofthe 70 haplotypes had not been previously ***,we also identified 81 new host–parasite interactions representing new host records for these haemosporidian *** outcomesrevealed that the effective diversity(as well as the richness,abundance,and Shannon–Weaver index)for both birds and parasite lineages was higher in Amazon basin ***,we also showed that ecoregions with greater diversity of bird species also had highparasite richness,hence suggesting that host community is crucial in explaining parasite *** parasites were found in ecoregions with lower bird diversity,implying that the abundanceand richness of hosts may shape the exploitation strategy followed by haemosporidian *** outcomes reveal that Neotropical region is a major reservoir of unidentified *** studies analyzing host distribution and specificity of these parasites inthe tropics will provide important knowledge about phylogenetic relationships,phylogeography,and patterns of evolution and distribution of haemosporidian parasites.

人们需要对环境状况有更好的理解。同时,当地群众被排斥在环境决策之外的现象日益引起人们的关注。其中一项提出的解决方案就是参与式环境监测。在评估环境监测的有效性时,科学家通常关注的焦点可能在于准确性,或者保护作用的效率。为了测试投资于参与式的生物多样性监测在为管理决策获取数据方面是否有经济价值,我们在菲律宾各公园比较了参与式的和常规生物多样性监测手段的成本效益。我们发现,从政府的角度讲,在发挥保护管理干预方面投资于与科技和参与密切结合的监测比在近似水平的投资下投资于只有常规科技手段的监测显然更有效。此外,当地人似乎能从土地和其它资源方面的比较可靠的实际使用权上受益。参与式的生物多样性监测不但是在常规监测不能发挥作用时象征成本效益的可供选择的方法,而且在已经实施常规监测的地方也能发挥意想不到的有效的补充作用,从而实现更高水平的保护管理干预。
