A novel organic-inorganic chromium(III) hybrid salt, triethylammonium trans-diaquabis(oxalato-κ2O1,O2)chromate(III), (C6H16N)[Cr(C2O4)2(H2O)2] (1), has been synthesized in aqueous solution and characterized by elemental and thermal analyses, FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, and by single crystal X-ray structure determination. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, Pbcn space group with the unit cell parameters a = 11.1776(10), b = 7.6105(10), c = 17.5654(2) Å, α = β = γ = 90°, V = 1494.24(3) Å3, Z = 4 and Z’ = 1/2. The structure of 1 consists of [Cr(C2O4)2(H2O)2]− mononuclear anions and triethylammonium [(C2H5)3NH]+ cations. In the anionic unit, the CrIII ion is six coordinated, in a distorted octahedral geometry, by four equatorial O atoms of two oxalate anions acting as chelating ligands and two O atoms from trans-coordinated water molecules occupying the apical positions with longer metal-oxygen distances. In the solid, O-H … O and N-H … O intra and inter molecular hydrogen bonding interactions connect the components into a 3D network. A new organic-inorganic hybrid salt pipéridinium trans-diaquabis(oxalato)- chromate(III) tetrahydrate, (C5H10NH2)[Cr(C2O4)2(H2O)2]·4H2O (1), has been synthesized in water and characterized by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopies, elemental and thermal analyses and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic non-centrosymmetric space group Cmc21 with the unit cell parameters a = 7.4329(3), b = 9.9356(5), c = 23.6756(11) Å, α = β = γ = 90°, V = 1748.45(14) Å3 and Z = 4. The structure of 1 consists of [Cr(C2O4)2(H2O)2]- mononuclear anions, piperidinium cations and uncoordinated water molecules. The CrIII ion in the complex [Cr(C2O4)2(H2O)2]- is coordinated in a slightly distorted octahedral environment by four O atoms from two chelating oxalate dianions in the equatorial plane, and two O atoms from trans-coordinated water molecules occupying the apical positions. In the crystal, N-H···O and O-H···O hydrogen bond interactions connect the components into a 3-D framework. The IR spectrum of 1 is consistent with the presence of the various molecular building constituents, namely oxalato and aqua ligands, piperidinium cations and solvent water molecules. The UV-Vis spectrum shows two absorption bands around 564 and 416 nm which are compatible with an anionic chromium(III) complex in an octahedral environment. Thermal analysis shows a three-step decomposition of 1, leading to formation of a metal oxide residue.

Magnetic resonance imaging in children and adolescents with chronic inflammatory bowel disease

Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD) represent challenges, both from a diagnostic, and therapeutic point of view. Deep-seated anatomic structures are difficult to assess by ultrasound technique alone. As radiation-free alternative cross-sectional imaging method, magnetic resonance imaging of the intestinal structures is costly and time-consuming. Examination of pediatric patients imply additional considerations: reduction of body motions in younger children and consideration of the most appropriate preparation, and examination technique. The demanding Sellink technique is the only means for appropriately distending the lesser intestine in order to detect small bowel strictures. Oral intake of contrast medium(CM) alone shows its limitations regarding distensibility. The need for intravenous contrast media application needs to be considered, too. Active inflammation of both intestinal wall, and mesentery can be demonstrated accurately. Nevertheless, viable alternatives to CM application is desirable, considering non-negligible adverse reactions. Recent data suggest diffusion weighted imaging might fill this diagnostic gap. Irrespective of sequence technique chosen, bowel movement remains a major obstacle. Antispasmolytics in their function as smooth muscle relaxants help in improving image quality, however, their use in children might be off-label. Optimal preparation for the examination and appropriate imaging technique allow for diagnosing typical patterns of changes in IBD, such as bowel wall thickening, ulcers, mural stratification, strictures, creeping fat, and comb sign, and lymphadenopathy. The article gives a detailed overview of current significance of magnetic resonance imaging pediatric patients suffering from IBD, considering indications, limitations, and safety aspects.

Background:Acute-onset neurodegenerative diseases in older patients are rare clinical cases,especially when the degeneration only affects specific regions of the nervous *** neurological disorders have been described in which the degeneration of brain parenchyma originates from and/or primarily affects the brain *** diagnosis in these patients,however,is often complicated due to a poor understanding of these diseases and their underlying *** presentation:In this manuscript we report on a 73-year-old female who had experienced a sudden onset of complex neurological symptoms that progressively worsened over a period of 2 *** evaluation had suggested a MRI-negative stroke as underlying *** combination of patient’s medical history,clinical examination and exceptional pattern of brain stem degeneration presenting as“kissing swan sign”in MR imaging was strongly suggestive of acute onset of Alexander’s *** leukoencephalopathy is caused by GFAP(glial fibrilary acidic protein)gene mutations and may present with brain stem atrophy and stroke-like onset of symptoms in elderly ***,a pathognomonic GFAP gene mutation could not be identified by Sanger ***:After an extended differential diagnosis and exclusion of other diseases,a definite diagnosis of the patient’s condition presently remains ***,whole-exome sequencing performed from patient’s blood revealed 12 potentially disease-causative heterozygous variants,amongst which several have been associated with neurological disorders in vitro and in vivo–in particular the axon degeneration-related NMNAT2 gene.

As a dendritic cell-specific C-type lectin receptor, DC-sign plays an important role in the early stages of many viral infections, including HIV and Ebola, making it an interesting therapeutic target. It has been found that DC-sign can recognize both highly mannosylated and branched fucosylated oligosaccharides. Herein, we synthesized a new series of homo-and Man-Fuc heteroglycoclusters with diverse structures. The binding properties of these compounds to tetrameric extracellular DC-sign were assessed by surface plasmon resonance(SPR). Heteroglycocluster 17 b showed high DC-sign-binding activity(K;= 2.6 μM). The structural determinants of this high affinity of 17 b were rationalized by docking and compared with its much less potent isomer 17 a. Therefore, 17 b might serve as a base for the development of potent inhibitors of DC-sign-dependent viral infection.

Co and Phthalocyanine Overlayers on the Quantum-Well System Co(001)/Cu: Spin-Polarized Electron Reflection Experiments

The influence of a Co or phthalocyanine (Pc) molecular overlayer on the properties of quantum-well resonances (QWR) in Cu layers atop Co(001) is studied by means of spin-polarized electron reflection. For Co atoms and Pc molecules, an energy shift of the QWR-induced signal is observed with increasing coverage and is attributed to a variation of the electron reflection phase at the Cu/Co and Cu/Pc interface. For Co we find a linear energy shift in the Cu QWR energy position with increasing coverage down to the sub-monolayer regime. This shows that the phase accumulation model remains accurate within the sub-monolayer regime of a discontinuous interface. An opposite sign in the energy shift between Co and Pc overlayers could reflect an opposite impact on the Cu surface work function of overlayer adsorption.

Platinum diselenide(PtSe_(2))is a promising two-dimensional(2D)material for the terahertz(THz)range as,unlike other transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs),its bandgap can be uniquely tuned from a semiconductor in the nearinfrared to a semimetal with the number of atomic *** gives the material unique THz photonic properties that can be ***,we demonstrate that a controlled THz nonlinearity—tuned from monolayer to bulk PtSe_(2)—can be realized in wafer size polycrystalline PtSe_(2)through the generation of ultrafast photocurrents and the engineering of the bandstructure *** is combined with the PtSe_(2)layer interaction with the substrate for a broken material centrosymmetry,permitting a second order ***,we show layer dependent circular dichroism,where the sign of the ultrafast currents and hence the phase of the emitted THz pulse can be controlled through the excitation of different bandstructure *** particular,we show that a semimetal has a strong dichroism that is absent in the monolayer and few layer semiconducting *** microscopic origins of this TMD bandstructure engineering are highlighted through detailed DFT simulations,and shows the circular dichroism can be controlled when PtSe_(2)becomes a semimetal and when the K-valleys can be *** well as showing that PtSe_(2)is a promising material for THz generation through layer controlled optical nonlinearities,this work opens up a new class of circular dichroism materials beyond the monolayer limit that has been the case of traditional TMDs,and impacting a range of domains from THz valleytronics,THz spintronics to harmonic generation.
