Salinity stress is a major threat to global food production and its intensity is continuously increasing because of anthropogenic *** is a staple food and a source of carbohydrates and calories for the majority of people across the ***,wheat productivity is adversely affected by salt stress,which is associated with a reduction in germination,growth,altered reproductive behavior and enzymatic activity,disrupted photosynthesis,hormonal imbalance,oxidative stress,and yield ***,a better understanding of wheat(plant)behavior to salinity stress has essential implications to devise counter and alleviation measures to cope with salt *** approaches including the selection of suitable cultivars,conventional breeding,and molecular techniques can be used for facing salt stress ***,these techniques are tedious,costly,and *** practices are still helpful to improve the wheat performance under salinity *** of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi,plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria,and exogenous application of phytohormones,seed priming,and nutrient management are important tools to improve wheat performance under salinity *** this paper,we discussed the effect of salinity stress on the wheat crop,possible mechanisms to deal with salinity stress,and management options to improve wheat performance under salinity conditions.

Forest fire risk indices and zoning of hazardous areas in Sorocaba,Sao Paulo state,Brazil

This study compares the performance of three fire risk indices for accuracy in predicting fires in semideciduous forest fragments,creates a fire risk map by integrating historical fire occurrences in a probabilistic density surface using the Kernel density estimator(KDE)in the municipality of Sorocaba,Sao Paulo state,*** logarithmic Telicyn index,Monte Alegre formula(MAF)and enhanced Monte Alegre formula(MAF+)were employed using data for the period 1 January 2005 to 31 December *** data and numbers of fire occurrences were obtained from the National Institute of Meteorology(INMET)and the Institute for Space Research(INPE),*** performance measures were calculated:Heidke skill score(SS)and success rate(SR).The MAF+index was the most accurate,with values of SS and SR of 0.611%and 62.8%,*** fire risk map revealed two most susceptible areas with high(63 km^2)and very high(47 km^2)risk of fires in the *** of the best risk index and the generation of fire risk maps can contribute to better planning and cost reduction in preventing and fighting forest fires.

We report on the performance of AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes(UV-LEDs)emitting at 265 nm grown on stripe-patterned high-temperature annealed(HTA)epitaxially laterally overgrown(ELO)aluminium nitride(AIN)/sapphire *** this purpose,the structural and electro-optical properties of ultraviolet-c light-emitting diodes(UVC-LEDs)on as-grown and on HTA planar AlN/sapphire as well as ELO AlN/sapphire with and without HTA are investigated and *** measurements reveal dark spot densities of 3.5×10^9 cm^-2,1.1×10^9 cm^-2,1.4×10^9 cm^-2,and 0.9×10^9 cm^-2 in multiple quantum well samples on as-grown planar AIN/sapphire,HTA planar AlN/sapphire,ELO AlN/sapphire,and HTA ELO AlN/sapphire,respectively,and are consistent with the threading dislocation densities determined by transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and high-resolution X-ray diffraction rocking *** UVC-LED performance improves with the reduction of the threading dislocation densities(TDDs).The output powers(measured on-wafer in cw operation at 20 mA)of the UV-LEDs emitting at 265 nm were 0.03 mW(planar AlN/sapphire),0.8 mW(planar HTA AlN/sapphire),0.9 mW(ELO AlN/sapphire),and 1.1 mW(HTA ELO AlN/sapphire),***,Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations showed a 15%increase in light-extraction efficiency due to the voids formed in the ELO *** results demonstrate that HTA ELO AlN/sapphire templates provide a viable approach to increase the efficiency of UV-LEDs,improving both the internal quantum efficiency and the light-extraction efficiency.

Determination of the Anti-Adhesive and Anti-Biofilm Capacity of a Wheat Extract on <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i>in Farms

The formation of biofilm by pathogenic microorganisms has become a problem in the livestock industry since it is considered a potential source of infection for farm animals while increasing microbial resistance to physical and chemical agents. Some plant extracts, such as soluble wheat extract, have been shown to be effective in inhibiting or destroying the biofilm of certain micro-organisms under specific conditions. The objective of this study is to evaluate the capacity of the pathogen to form biofilm on different surfaces used in livestock, as well as to evaluate the anti-biofilm capacity of the soluble wheat extract against S. aureus on these surfaces. The inhibition potential of inhibition or destruction of biofilm was tested in vitro. Wheat extract at a concentration of 0.29 mg/100mL showed anti-biofilm activity on S. aureus, inhibiting its formation, as well as destroying it greatly after a contact time of 24 hours, on those surfaces where the microorganism presents more adhesion capacity.

Real Time MR Thermometry Using Tm-DOTMA

We present results of real-time and sensitive MR Thermometry (MRT) using a paramagnetic lanthanide complex thulium 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetramethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraa-cetate (Tm-DOTMA) to study radio frequency (RF) heating induced by a copper wire and a titanium bone screw in an agarose gel phantom. The temperature dependent chemical shift coefficient (TDCSC) of the methyl resonance was found to be 0.7 ± 0.03 ppm/°;C in agarose gel. The methyl protons of Tm-DOTMA were imaged using 2D chemical shift imaging (CSI) and 3D phase mapping methods (PMM), approximately 7 sec long, and compared with conventional water proton resonance frequency (PRF) method. Two RF-induced heating approaches were tested: 1) using a prescan before the MRT;or 2) using the heating caused by the imaging pulse during continuous imaging. Both approaches allowed detection of temperature changes which are less than 1°;C and continuously mapping temperature changes around the copper wire. Using a heating pre-scan, the Tm-DOTMA 2D-CSI allowed better qualitative visualization of the temperature changes around the titanium screw compared with water phase shift thermometry. Numerical electromagnetic field simulations were also conducted for the evaluation of orientation dependency using the copper wire in 4.7 T (200 MHz). Thermometry approach using Tm-DOTMA can detect smaller temperature changes with decreased scanning time resulting in real-time and sensitive temperature mapping.

Background/Aim: Antarctic seaweeds are considered a promising source of compounds with anticancer activity. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most incident cancers with high mortality rates worldwide. This work aimed to characterize chemically extracts of the Antarctic macroalgae Iridaea cordata, Cystosphaera jacquinotii and Desmarestia anceps and to evaluate the cytotoxic effects against human colon cancer HCT 116 cell line. Materials and Methods: The extracts were obtained by depletion using an ultrasound probe and were identified by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Cell viability was determined by MTT assay. Results: Hexanic and chloroform extracts of the I. cordata and the hexanic, chloroform and methanolic extracts of D. anceps were able to inhibit growth of colorectal cancer cells in the three different incubation times (24, 48 and 72 h). Through GC analysis, 01 compounds were identified in the hexane extract and 02 compounds in the chloroform extract of the algae I. cordata. The hexane extract of D. anceps macroalgae presented 5 compounds, chloroform extract 10 and methanolic extract 3 respectively, with special highlight to fucosterol. Carotenoid analysis by HPLC identified β-carotene in all species, while zeaxanthin was present in the spectrum of I. cordata and C. jacquinotii. Fucoxanthin and violaxanthin were confirmed in the brown seaweeds C. jacquinotii and D. anceps. Conclusion: Extracts of macroalgae I. Cordata and D. anceps may be a source of therapeutic agents against CRC.

In this paper we describe the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry(eXTP) mission for studies related to accretion flows in the strong field gravity regime around both stellar-mass and supermassive black-holes. eXTP has the unique capability of using advanced "spectral-timing-polarimetry" techniques to analyze the rapid variations with three orthogonal diagnostics of the flow and its geometry, yielding unprecedented insight into the inner accreting regions, the effects of strong field gravity on the material within them and the powerful outflows which are driven by the accretion process.
