Fra.tiona. initia.-va.ue problems(IVPs) a.d time-fra.tiona. initia.-bounda.y va.ue problems(IBVPs), ea.h with a.Ca.uto tempora. deriva.ive of order α ∈(0, 1), a.e considered. a. a.era.ed va.ia.t of the well-known L1 scheme is proved to be O(N^(-2)) convergent for IVPs on suita.ly gra.ed meshes with N points, thereby improving the O(N^(-(2-α))) convergence ra.e of the sta.da.d L1 scheme. The a.a.ysis relies on a.delica.e decomposition of the tempora. trunca.ion error tha. yields a.sha.p dependence of the order of convergence on the degree of mesh gra.ing used. This a.era.ed L1 scheme ca. be combined with a.finite difference or piecewise linea. finite element discretiza.ion in spa.e for IBVPs, a.d under a.restriction on the tempora. mesh width, one gets a.a.n O(N^(-2)) convergence in time, together with O(h^(2)) convergence in spa.e,where h is the spa.ia. mesh width. Numerica. experiments support our results.
