Percutaneous closure of secundum type atrial septal defects:More than 5-year follow-up

AIM: To investigate long-term efficacy of two different devices more than five years after percutaneous atrial septal defect(ASD) closure in ***: All patients who underwent percutaneous closure of an ASD in the St. Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands, between February 1998 and December 2006 were included. Percutaneous closure took place under general anaesthesia and transesophageal echocardiographic moni toring. Transthoracic echocardiography(TTE) was performed 24 h post-procedure to visualize the device position and to look for residual shunting using color Doppler. All complications were registered. All patients were invited for an outpatient visit and contrast TTE more than 5-years after closure. Efficacy was based on the presence of a residual right-to-left shunt(RLS), graded as minimal, moderate or severe. The presence of a residual left-to-right shunt(LRS) was diagnosed using color Doppler, and was not graded. Descriptive statistics were used for patients' characteristics. Univariate analysis was used to identify predictors for residual ***: In total, 104 patients(mean age 45.5 ± 17.1 years) underwent percutaneous ASD closure using an Amplatzer device(ASO) in 76 patients and a cardioseal/Starflex device(cS/SF) in 28 patients. The mean follow-up was 6.4 ± 3.4 years. Device migration occurred in 4 patients of whom two cases occurred during the index hospitalization(1 ASO, 1 cS/SF). The other 2 cases of device migration occurred during the first 6 mo of follow-up(2 cS/SF). The recurrent thrombo-embolic event rate was similar in both groups: 0.4% per follow-up year. More than 12 mo post-ASD closure and latest follow-up, new-onset supraventricular tachyarrhythmia's occurred in 3.9% and 0% for the ASO and cS/SF group, respectively. The RLS rate at latest follow-up was 17.4%(minimal 10.9%, moderate 2.2%, severe 4.3%) and 45.5%(minimal 27.3%, moderate 18.2%, severe 0%) for the ASO- and cS/SF groups, respectively. Sediment Pollution Assessment of Abandoned Residential Developments Using Remote Sensing and GIS

The current economic crisis has left numerous residential developments in the southeastern United States in various stages of construction. Many of them are currently graded and essentially abandoned, creating a major source of sediment runoff to waterways. Residential development locations with significant bare soil areas were identified through classification of Landsat 5 TM satellite imagery and subsequently verified from high-resolution county aerial photographs. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) was used in a geographic information system (GIS) as a tool for prioritizing identified locations on the basis of potential soil loss assuming the worst case scenario of a completely unmaintained site. Initial GIS identification indicated 301 sites with a total bare soil area of 2 378 ha over three counties in Upstate South carolina. A random sample of 153 sites was visited over 17 days and assessed using a mobile GIS, global positioning system (GPS), and digital camera for field validation. Results indicated that 78% (119) of the sites were classified correctly (residential construction sites in varying stages of completion); 88% of identified areas were less than 25% built compared to the previous year; 48% were categorized as moderate to severe problems. Abandoned and unfinished developments in Upstate South carolina may represent a major source of sediment pollution to streams. Well-maintained erosion control devices may be useful in preventing offsite sedimentation.

Potential contribution of combined Atmospheric ca^(2+) and Mg^(2+) Wet Deposition Within the continental U.S. to Soil Inorganic carbon Sequestration

Soil inorganic carbon （SIc） stocks continuously change from the formation of pedogenic carbonates, a process requiring inputs of ca2＋ and Mg2＋ ions. This study ranked the soil orders in terms of potential inorganic carbon sequestration resulting from wet ca2＋ and Mg2＋ deposition from 1994 to 2003 within the continental United States. The analysis revealed that average annual atmospheric wet deposition of ca2＋ and Mg2＋ was the highest in the central Midwest-Great Plains region, likely due to soil particle input from loess-derived soils. The soil orders receiving the highest total average annual atmospheric wet ca2＋ and Mg2＋ deposition, expressed as potential inorganic carbon formation （barring losses from erosion and leaching）, were： 1） Mollisols （1.1 × 10^8 kg c）, 2） Alfisols （8.4 × 10^7 kg c）, 3） Entisols （3.8 × 10^7 kg c）, and 4） Aridisols （2.8 × 10^7 kg c）. In terms of area-normalized result, the soil orders were ranked： 1） Histosols （73 kg c km-2）, 2） Alfisols and Vertisols （64 kg c km-2）, 3） Mollisols （62 kg c km-2）, and 4） Spodosols （52 kg c kin-2）. The results of this study provide an estimate of potential soil inorganic carbon sequestration as a result of atmospheric wet ca2＋ and Mg2＋ deposition, and this information may be useful in assessing dynamic nature of soil inorganic carbon pools.

Induction of chromosomal Aberrations by Propoxur in Mouse Bone Marrow cells

Propoxur is a widely used dithiocarbamate insecticide. In this study, the clastogenic effect of propoxur has been evaluated using chromosomal aberration assay in mouse bone marrow cells. Single i. p. administration of propoxur, at 25 mg/kg ***., a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) and 12 .5mg/kg *** (50% of MTD) have significantly induced different types of aberrations after 24 h of treatment. The aberrations were dose and time dependent and reached a maximum after 24 h of exposure. The sresult suggest a genotoxic potential of propoxur.

Seasonal changes on two different spatial scales： response of aquatic invertebrates to water body and microhabitat

Knowledge about the spatial and temporal scales of both habitat use and the functional significance of different adaptations is essential for an understanding of the population dynamics of invertebrate assemblages. This fundamental knowledge is not only interesting from an academic point of view, but is sorely lacking and needed in the field of restoration ecology. Many species are threatened due to degradation. Knowing what environmental conditions are needed dtLring the life cycle of these species is important in the design of restoration measures which aim to lift existing bottlenecks for threatened species. To assess the relative importance of water type and microhabitat in structuring the invertebrate assemblage during different seasons, invertebrates were sampled in three water bodies differing in trophic level and acidity. Different parts within a water body （microhabitats） were sampled separately and each water body was sampled in all four seasons. Results show that water body is an important factor structuring the invertebrate assemblage early in the season, whereas microhabitat became more important later in the season. Structural complexity of microhabitats was related to the type of locomotion employed by invertebrates. Seasonal differences could be related to population dynamics （reproduction, mortality）. Moreover, fluctuations in resource availability were expected to differ between the water bodies, with highest fluctuations in the eutrophic water body and with fluctuations becoming less predictable later in the season. This was confirmed by the data： species synchronization to pulses in food availability was strongest in the eutrophic water body. Moreover, synchronization was strongest in summer, while in autumn waters were invaded by dispersive species. Based on these results a synthesis is presented on the functioning of the different waters during the different seasons.

Through a bioreplication approach, we have fabricated artificial visual decoys for the invasive species Agrilus planipen- nis--commonly known as the Emerald Ash Borer （EAB）. The mating behavior of this species involves an overflying EAB male pouncing on an EAB female at rest on an ash leaflet before copulating. The male spots the female on the leaflet by visually detecting the iridescent green color of the female＇s elytra. As rearing EAB and then deploying dead females as decoys for trapping is both arduous and inconvenient, we decided to fabricate artificial decoys. We used a dead female to make a negative die of nickel and a positive die of epoxy. Decoys were then made by first depositing a quarter-wave-stack Bragg reflector on a polymer sheet and then stamping it with a pair of matched negative and positive dies to take the shape of the upper surface of an EAB female. As nearly 100 artificial decoys were fabricated from just one EAB female, this bioreplication process is industrially scalable. Preliminary results from a field trapping test are indicative of success.

In 2015,17 Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)were approved,including SDG13,which addresses actions to increase carbon capture(cO_(2)-c storage)for climate change ***,no analytical procedures have been defined for quantifying soil organic carbon(SOc)*** paper presents a rapid tool for guiding farmers and for monitoring SOc sequestration in farmer *** tool consists of multiconstituent soil analyses through near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS)and an SOc mineralization *** tool provides forecasts of SOc sequestration over *** analyses by NIRS have been calibrated and validated for farmer fields in European countries,china,New Zealand,and *** indicate a high accuracy of determination for SOc(R^(2)≥0.93),and for inorganic c,soil texture,and soil bulk *** oxidizable soil c is used as proxy for active SOc,to detect early management-induced changes in SOc contents,and is also quantified by NIRS(R^(2)=0.92).A pedotransfer function is used to convert the results of the soil analyses to SOc sequestration in kg·ha^(-1)c as well as cO_(2).In conclusion,the tool allows fast,quantitative,and action-driven monitoring of SOc sequestration in farmer fields,and thereby is an essential tool for monitoring progress of SDG13.
