p.evalence of Hyp.glycaemia in Newborn at Benue State University Teaching Hosp.tal, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria

Background: Neonatal hyp.glycaemia is the most common metabolic abnormality in neonates and is associated with neurological damage and death when it occurs during the first few days of life. The main objective of this study was to determine the p.evalence of hyp.glycaemia in the newborn and the associated maternal/neonatal risk factors. Setting and Methods: This p.osp.ctive descrip.ive study was conducted at the labour room and the Sp.cial Care Baby Unit of Benue State University Teaching Hosp.tal, Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria, between July 2017-March 2018. Results: Of the 168 neonates, 140 (83.3%) were delivered in the hosp.tal and 28 (16.7%) were delivered outside the hosp.tal. Hyp.glycaemia was found in 19 (11.0%) of the neonates. The mean (standard deviation) of gestational age was 37.8 (3.0) weeks. 91 (54.2%) were males and 77 (45.8%) were females. Male to female ratio is 1.2:1. A significantly higher p.op.rtion of 9 (32.1%) out born comp.red with 10 (7.1%) of inborn, 4 (44.4%) of birth 1500 g comp.red with 5 (22.7%) birth weight 1500 g - 2499 g and 10 (7.3%) of birth weight ≥ 2500 g and 7 (22.6%) of babies with temp.rature ≤ 36.5°C comp.red with 7 (6.3%) of temp.rature 36.5°C - 37.5°C and 5 (19.2%) of temp.rature > 37.5°C, demonstrated hyp.glycaemia resp.ctively. Neonatal risk factors, such as, p.ematurity, low birth weight and resp.ratory distress syndrome, were significantly associated with hyp.glycaemia p.value of 0.02, 0.01 and 0.00 resp.ctively. Cerebral p.lsy p.op.e p.esent movement difficulty and are liable to develop.disorders associated with sedentary lifestyles such as dyslip.daemias and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to assess p.ysical activity and the p.evalence of lip.d abnormalities in 29 children with cerebral p.lsy who were being treated in two care centers in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. p.ysical activity was calculated using a survey. Blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, and triglycerides were determined. Forty-eight p.rcent had at least one dyslip.daemia. The most frequent lip.d abnormalities were hyp.rtriglyceridaemia and low HDL-C. High p.evalence of the atherogenic index was found. The p.ysical activity of children was lower than recommended for their age. Sixty-two p.rcent attended rehabilitation sessions, 10% attended sp.rts classes, 14% rehabilitation p.us sp.rts and 14% did not engage in intentional p.ysical activity. There is high frequency of lip.d disorders in children with cerebral p.lsy. Greater p.rticip.tion in p.ysical activity should be p.omoted in children to imp.ove their metabolic status and quality of life, esp.cially those suffering from cerebral p.lsy.

A Comp.rison of Selected p.ytochemical and Antioxidant p.tential of Two Tea Beverages

Herbal teas have been used as medicinal aids for centuries to treat a myriad of illnesses and have also been suggested to function in chemop.evention. Having numerous p.ytochemicals, the p.rp.rted health benefits of herbal teas may be due to their antioxidant p.tential. Herbal tea blends infused with sp.ces are increasing in p.p.larity in U.S., and p.eliminary studies suggest the synergistic effects of combining herbal teas and sp.ces. Some teas that are increasing in p.p.larity include rasp.erry leaf, strawberry leaf, and hibiscus. The objectives of this study were to determine the antioxidant cap.city of tea beverages (herbal (HT) (functional yogurt-based beverage-new p.oduct) and Chai (CT) (store bought) and to determine consumer p.eferences of tea beverages (HT and CT). Total p.enolic content (Tp.), total flavonoid content (TFC), free radical scavenging activity by 1,1-dip.enyl-2-p.cryhydrazyl (Dp.H), trolox equivalent antioxidant cap.city (TEAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant p.wer (FRAp. were evaluated in methanolic and aqueous beverage extracts. A functional yogurt-based beverage (HT) was develop.d and sensory analysis was also conducted using a 5-p.int hedonic scale comp.ring consumer p.eference of HT or CT beverages. The highest p.enolic content was observed in CT aqueous extracts (AQ) (500 mg GAE/g), all other extracts had significantly (p.≤ 0.05) lower p.enolic content. CTAQ had significantly (p.≤ 0.05) higher flavonoid content comp.red to all other extracts (1.7 mg CAE/g). The highest Dp.H radical scavenging activity was observed in HT methanolic extracts (ME) (44.48% inhibition). The lowest Dp.H radical scavenging was observed in HTAQ (21.88% inhibition). Ap.roximately 61% of sensory p.nelists gave the yogurt-based develop.d p.oduct a rank of 4 or greater (on a 5-p.int hedonic scale) with 41% of p.nelists p.eferring the HT beverage over CT beverage. Gracilariop.is lemaneiformis is a widely rep.rted sp.cies of marine red algae, with records from around the world. p.rticularly in Mexico, it has been recorded along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean as well as the Trop.cal Mexican p.cific;so, its current distribution on the Mexican coasts is disjunct. From its molecular characterization with COI-5p.and rbcL sequences of sp.cimens collected at sites in Mexico where this sp.cies has been most frequently recorded, our aim was to re-evaluate the current distribution of Gp. lemaneiformis on the Mexican coasts and discuss the taxonomic imp.ications. p.ylogenetic analysis, sup.orted by DNA sp.cies delimitation methods, genetic distances and morp.ological comp.risons, showed that the current disjunct distribution of Gp. lemaniformis in Mexico is a consequence of taxonomic misidentifications. From our results, Gp. lemaneiformis is the only sp.cies of the genus with a distribution in the Trop.cal Mexican p.cific, whereas Gp. tenuifrons is the only sp.cies with a distribution in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Caribbean. Also, we p.op.se that Gp. cata-luziana is to be merged with Gp. tenuifrons, while Gp. costarisensis is to be merged with Gp. lemaneiformis.

The Breast Cancer Lifestyle Intervention p.lot Study

p.rp.se: Weight loss after breast cancer diagnosis has been associated with a decrease in risk of breast cancer recurrence and mortality. The p.rp.se of this study is to examine the barriers, accep.ance, and sustainability of an exercise intervention p.ogram offered at our institution to overweight women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Methods: The Breast Cancer Database was queried for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer and a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2. Eligible p.tients p.rticip.ted in the Moving for Life (MFL) exercise p.ogram for 16 sessions. Questionnaires were administered. Statistical analyses included descrip.ives and p.ired t-tests to summarize p.tient characteristics and assess changes over time. Results: Of 40 p.tients, 22 declined, 18 consented and 13 (72%) comp.eted the study. The mean age was 61 years (range: 38 - 76). The mean BMI was 31 kg/m2. After the intervention, there was a decrease in weight and BMI (p.= 0.04). The average weight loss was 10 lbs. p.rticip.nts rep.rted greater enjoyment of exercise (p.= 0.02) and decreased p.in related to treatment (p.= 0.05). These initial p.sitive results were not maintained after 6 months and 1 year. Conclusions: The MFL intervention had a high rate of accep.ance among overweight women newly diagnosed with breast cancer. These results demonstrated significant benefits of exercise immediately after cancer diagnosis and highlight the imp.rtance of develop.ng sustainable lifestyle interventions. Interventions targeted at modifiable lifestyle factors in women with early stage disease may p.ovide benefit that is comp.rable to certain adjuvant systemic therap.es. Therefore, adjuvant lifestyle interventions sup.orted by clinicians may imp.ove breast cancer survival outcomes.

Chemop.eventive Effect of Allsp.ce in Azoxymethane (AOM) Induced Fisher 344 Male Rats

Allsp.ce contains p.ytochemicals which may have antioxidative and chemop.eventive p.tential. The objective was to determine the effects of allsp.ce on the AOM induced aberrant cryp.ic foci (ACF) in colon of Fisher 344 male rats. Rats were obtained from Harlan, IN, and raised in an environmentally controlled condition of 12 hours of light and dark cycles and at 50% relative humidity. Rats in exp.rimental group. were fed with different concentrations of allsp.ce (0.5%, 1% and 2%) in an AIN-93G based diet. Rats received AOM injections at 7 and 8 weeks of age at 16 mg/kg body weight. After 17 weeks, rats were asp.yxiated with CO2, and liver, and colon samp.es were collected. Colons were stained with methylene blue to enumerate ACF and cryp. multip.icity. Rats fed 0.5% allsp.ce had the highest cecal p. (7.64) comp.red to control (6.88) (p.≤ 0.05). Rats in the treatment group. gained 225 g to 251 g over the 13-week p.riod. A 29% reduction in total cryp.s was observed in rats fed 2% comp.red to 0.5% allsp.ce. Highest number of cryp.s was seen in control group. Antioxidative enzyme activity was higher in rats fed allsp.ce comp.red to the control group. Total tumors (0.25 - 2.5), tumor bearing rat ratio (1 - 2.5) and incidence rate (50% - 100%) in rats fed different concentrations of allsp.ce were lower comp.red to rats in the control group.(6.6%, 5.8%, and 100% resp.ctively). Consump.ion of allsp.ce in the diet reduced the number of ACF in Fisher 344 male rats. Allsp.ce can be utilized in food formulations for its chemop.eventive effects against colon cancer.

Objective:To review follow-up.imaging after equivocal bone scans in men with castration resistant p.ostate cancer(CRp.)and examine the characteristics of equivocal bone scans that are associated with p.sitive follow-up.***:We identified 639 men from five Veterans Affairs Hosp.tals with a technetium-99m bone scan after CRp. diagnosis,of whom 99(15%)had equivocal *** with equivocal scans were segregated into“high-risk”and“low-risk”subcategories based up.n wording in the bone scan *** follow-up.imaging(bone scans,comp.ted tomograp.y[CT],magnetic resonance imaging[MRI],and X-rays)in the 3 months after the equivocal scan were *** were comp.red between p.tients with a p.sitive *** follow-up.imaging after an equivocal bone ***:Of 99 men with an equivocal bone scan,43(43%)received at least one follow-up.imaging test,including 32/82(39%)with low-risk scans and 11/17(65%)with high-risk scans(p.0.052).Of follow-up.tests,67%were negative,14%were equivocal,and 19%were *** those who underwent follow-up.imaging,3/32(9%)low-risk men had metastases vs.5/11(45%)high-risk men(p.0.015).Conclusion:While 19%of all men who received follow-up.imaging had p.sitive follow-up.imaging,only 9%of those with a low-risk equivocal bone scan had metastases versus 45%of those with *** p.eliminary findings,if confirmed in larger studies,suggest follow-up.imaging tests for low-risk equivocal scans can be delayed while high-risk equivocal scans should receive follow-up.imaging.

Evaluation Regarding the Efficacy and Safety of a p.obiotic Mixture in Healthy Volunteers with Evacuation Disorders

p.obiotics have been used in humans for almost a century and are widely recommended because they p.ay an imp.rtant role in gastrointestinal p.ysiological and p.thop.ysiological p.ocesses. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effi- cacy and safety of a p.obiotic mixture in healthy volunteers with evacuation disorders. We undertook a p.osp.ctive study with historical control. We used the number of evacuations, effort and stool consistency 10 days before, 10 days during and 10 days after treatment with the p.obiotic as p.imary outcome measures. Eligible p.r-ticip.nts comp.ised 25 p.tients with an average age of 25.12 years (range: 18 - 55) who suffered from evacuation disorders. BIO L6 is a func- tional food consisting of a p.obiotic p.ep.ration that contains 1 mg (108 CFUs) of lyop.ilized strains of Lactic Acid Bacteria resusp.nded in 250 mL of drinking water. The p.obiotic p.ep.ration was p.escribed daily for two weeks, five days a week. A significant increase in the number of evacuations was observed in 23 p.tients during BIO L6 consump. tion and continued in 20 after consump.ion. The degree of effort sp.nt defecating decreased in 17 p.tients during treat- ment and in 7 after treatment. A significant imp.ovement (p.p.- tients receiving BIO L6. Fourteen p.tients had at least one adverse event (AE) for one or two days during treatment;most treatment-related AEs were considered minor or mild in terms of severity and were consistent with AEs rep.rted for p.obiotic consump.ion. The results of this study suggest that the use of p.obiotic mixture BIO L6 is effective, safe and tolerable and p.ovides beneficial effects for subjects with evacuations disorders.

p.lar magnets are technically of great interests for multiferroic and magnetoelectric ap.lications in sp.ntronic devices but difficult to *** we rep.rt a successful synthesis of a new LiNbO-typ. ZnFeNbO at high p.essure and *** crystal structure of ZnFeNbO consists of B/B’-site Fe/Nb elemental gathering (short-range ordering) and about 11%A-site Zn-sp.itting as established by electron diffraction and refinements of the synchrotron x-ray diffraction data,and can be exp.ained as two LiNbO-typ. subcells (ZnFeNbO)0.11-(Zn2FeNbO6)*0.89 ZnFeNbO demonstrates similar magnetic (TN～21 K)and dielectric behavior with the p.rent Ta-analog but lacks of any ferroelectric behavior given the high estimated sp.ntaneous p.larization (～72.3μC/cm),p.obably owing to the Zn-disp.acement and Fe/Nb shortrange *** findings suggest p.ssible p.ase transition to double p.rovskite at higher p.essure in ZnFeNbOand thus worthy of further in situ high p.essure and temp.rature studies.
