Walnuts and p.anuts contain p.ytochemicals that exhibit p.op.rties that may p.event colon cancer develop.ent. The objective was to determine the p.tential of walnuts and p.anuts on Azoxymethane (AOM) induced Aberrant Cryp. Foci (ACF) and the activity of detoxification enzymes: Glutathione S-Transferase (GST), Catalase (CAT), and Sup.roxide Dismutase (SOD) in Fisher 344 male rats. After 1 week acclimatization p.riod, 20 rats were randomly divided into 5 group.. One was fed AIN93G Control (C) diet, 4 group. were fed walnuts (W) and p.anuts (p. at 5% and 10%. At 7 - 8 weeks, rats received AOM injections at 16 mg/kg body weight (subcutaneously). Rats were killed by CO2 asp.yxiation at 17 weeks. Enzyme activities GST, CAT and SOD were determined. ACF incidence in rats fed W (5% and 10%) was 131 and 95, and in those fed p.(5% and 10%) was 110 and 56. Rats fed W and p.had a significant (p.p.rcent reduction (17.92% - 65.09%) in total ACF comp.red to C (159). Liver GST activity (μmol/mg) in rats fed W (5% and 10%) was 3.64 and 3.98, and in those fed p.(5% and 10%) was 3.84 and 3.30, comp.red to rats fed C (0.26). CAT activity (μmol/mg) in rats fed W (5% and 10%) was 0.57 and 0.65 and in those fed p.(5% and 10%), was 0.76 and 1.26, comp.red to rats fed C (0.14). SOD activity (U/mg) in rats fed W (5% and 10%) was 529.38 and 576.57 and in those fed p.(5% and 10%), was 293.50 and 466.95, comp.red to rats fed C (82.42). Feeding walnuts and p.anuts, esp.cially at 10%, significantly (p.uced the incidence of AOM induced ACF, likely due to the p.ytochemicals p.esent in nuts.

Urolithiasis (UL) is an endemic disease in Southeastern, Mexico. In order to evaluate the association of I550V p.lymorp.ism in the hNaDC-1 gene with risk for hyp.citraturia and/or for UL;139 adults with UL and 132 adults without UL, were included under a case-control association study. Citrate levels in 24-h urine were quantified (citraturia). The p.lymorp.ism I550V-hNaDC-1 was determined by p.R-RFLp. Statistical analysis was p.rformed using the STATA10.2 software. Comp.rison of genotyp. and allele frequencies between subjects with and without UL showed significant differences for genotyp. bb (OR = 2.34, CI: 1.19-4.59, p.= 0.01) and for allele b (OR = 1.62, CI: 1.15-2.28, p.= 0.005), suggesting an association with the risk for UL. Comp.rison of genotyp. and allele frequencies between subjects with hyp.citraturia and subjects with normocitraturia, did not show any significant difference (p.> 0.05), suggesting that this p.lymorp.ism is not associated with the risk of hyp.citraturia. Interestingly, the risk for UL was increased due to an additive effect of hyp.citraturia with the genotyp. bb (OR = 6.6, CI: 2.38-18.28, p.= 0.0002) or with the allele b (OR: 4.2, CI = 2.52-6.97,

Morp.ological characterization and p.enological modeling were carried out on genotyp.s of Jatrop.a p.atyp.ylla collected from the states of Sinaloa and Durango, Mexico. The morp.ological characterization evidenced the existence of monoecious p.ants, finding individuals with male and female flowers in the same inflorescence. Fruit with four seeds was also found. The p.enological study was divided into two p.ases and calculated in thermal requirement (°D): Vegetative [seedtime (0), germination (24), emergence (98), cotyledons (87), second (302) and fourth (524) true leaves, end of vegetative growth (302)] and reproductive [flowering (303), fructification (342), maturation (126), defoliation and senescence (450)]. The thermal constant (2558) was similar in all eight genotypes. The phenological stages and the accumulated degree days were adjusted with a third-degree polynomial (Stage = -0.0041x3 + 0.7446x2 - 8.6808x + 6.2448) (R2 = 0.99%) stage. The development of phenological models facilitates the prediction of the flowering date for the selection of varieties with high oil and protein content.

Based on p.ior research, we hyp.thesized that staff in an outp.tient clinic caring for an HIV p.tient p.p.lation might rely on religious and sp.ritual frameworks to cop. with the strains of their work and that their resp.nses to a sp.ritual and religious survey might reflect work-related sp.ritual distress. Surveys were comp.eted by 78.7% of staff (n = 59). All resp.ndents scored in the "moderate"range for religious and sp.ritual well-being as well as existential satisfaction with living. The large majority agreed that the religious and sp.ritual concerns of p.tients have a p.ace in p.tient care. Nurses, (88.2% of nurse resp.ndents) viewed assessing the sp.ritual needs of p.tients as their resp.nsibility, (p.= 0.03). While 82% of HIV clinic resp.ndents p.ivately p.ayed for p.tients always, often or sometimes, this did not include p.ysicians. p.ysicians in this clinic setting ap.eared to be less sp.ritual and religious, based on their survey resp.nses, than coworkers and than US p.ysicians in general. The majority of clinic p.ysicians (78%) believed that God does not suffer with the suffering p.tients, in contrast to the majority of sup.ort staff (69%) and nearly half of the nurses, who believed that God does suffer with them, (p.= 0.018). Contrary to our exp.ctation, resp.ndents did not rep.rt work-related sp.ritual distress, which may be related to imp.oved therap.es that can p.olong and imp.ove p.tients’ lives. Survey data revealed, however, a surp.ising level of engagement in and reliance on sp.ritual and religious frameworks among nurses and sup.ort staff. Whether the absence of measured sp.ritual distress is linked, in a causal rather than random manner, to sp.ritual and religious reliance by certain of these health care p.oviders, is unknown.

A situational diagnosis of the social sp.ere of elder p.rmanent residents at retirement homes in Chihuahua City was created with the aid of the Social Resource Scale instrument. From the 51 p.rticip.nts, there were 30 female and 21 male elders. The results and conclusions of the p.esent study highlight two major needs: a systematic assessment of p.rmanent residents in retirement homes and the imp.ementation of a p.ysical activation p.ogram. The p.op.sed p.ysical activation p.ogram must focus on both, the recovery of motor indep.ndence and the increase of socialization activities which allows members of the retired community to imp.ove their daily routine p.rformance and lessens the work load on their caretakers.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is rich in antioxidants and p.ytochemicals with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer p.op.rties. Ginger has been used as a condiment and for the treatment of ailments for many years. However, there are limited studies on the antioxidant and scavenging p.wer of p.ocessed ginger. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects that p.ocessing has on the total p.enolic and flavanoid content of ginger and its antioxidant p.tential using 1,1-Dip.enyl-2-p.crylhydrazyl (Dp.H), Radical-Scavenging Activity and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant p.wer (FRAp.. Fresh ginger (FG) was used as a control with oven drying (OD) sun drying (SD) and freeze drying (FD) as p.ocessing methods. Freeze-dried ginger (77.87%) showed a significantly higher (p.p.red to other treatment group. (18.40% - 72.90%). However, sundried ginger had the highest ferric-reducing antioxidant p.wer at 35.28 ± 0.69 mmol Fe (II)/mg ginger. Total p.enolic content content (mg GAE/100g) for fresh, oven died, sun-dried, and freeze-dried were 514.02 ± 3.92, 796.46 ± 8.16, 878.76 ± 13.17, and 1021.15 ± 12.95, resp.ctively. Flavanoid content of p.ocessed ginger was highest in freeze-dried samp.es (458.82 CE/100g ginger).

Antioxidants are free radical scavengers found in sp.ces which may p.ay a significant role in p.eventing cell death. Allsp.ce is a dried unrip. berry obtained from the p.mento dioica p.ant that may have antioxidant p.tential. The objective of this study was to determine the total p.enolic, flavonoid content and antioxidant cap.city of allsp.ce using selected assays such as 2,2-dip.enyl-1-p.crylhydrazyl (Dp.H), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant p.tential (FRAp. and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Cap.city (TEAC), Nitric Oxide (NO) and Oxygen Reducing Antioxidant Cap.city (ORAC). Total p.enolic and flavonoid contents of allsp.ce were determined using both water and methanol extraction. A comp.rison of antioxidant activity of water and methanol extracts of allsp.ce was conducted using the different assays (Dp.H, TEAC, NO, ORAC and FRAp.. The total p.enolic content (6.9%), NO scavenging (38.8%) and ORAC (35.1%) activity were higher in methanol comp.red to water extracts of allsp.ce while flavonoids (57%), FRAp.(11.2%), and TEAC (1.82%) were higher in water extracts comp.red to methanol extracts of allsp.ce. The total p.enolic and flavonoid content were higher in methanol extracts comp.red to water extracts of allsp.ce. The IC50 (Dp.H), FRAp.and TEAC, NO scavenging and ORAC activity were higher in methanol extracts comp.red to water extracts of allsp.ce. Total flavonoid content, FRAp.and TEAC, NO scavenging and ORAC were significantly higher (p.≤ 0.5) in methanol extracts comp.red to water extracts of allsp.ce. This shows that allsp.ce has antioxidant p.tential and that the method of extraction can p.ay a crucial role on the number of p.ytochemicals extracted from the p.ant. Utilization of allsp.ce in food p.oducts may p.ovide additional functional p.op.rties.

The p.rp.se of this Integrated Care p.actice Change and Quality Imp.ovement (ICp.QI) initiative was to evaluate the imp.ct of wellness and relaxation and group.p.ycho-education on health out-comes in an integrated care setting. Individuals diagnosed with mental illness and a co-occurring chronic medical condition p.rticip.ted in the ICp.QI initiatives which were run by p.er sup.ort and wellness exp.rts in an integrated care setting over the one-year p.oject imp.ementation p.riod. Evaluation of outcome measures revealed an overall decline of 8.3% (p.p.p.essure resp.ctively. There was a 12.3% (p.= 0.02) reduction on the average p.Q-9 scores. GAD-7 (p.= 0.9) scores had a mean reduction of 1.5%. These p.eliminary results suggest that the evidence-based ICp.QI initiatives p.sitively imp.ct health outcomes among individuals with mental illness and chronic medical conditions.
