Assessing the Imp.ct of Sulfur Atmosp.eric Dep.sition on Terrestrial Ecosystems Close to an Industrial Corridor in the Southeast of Mexico

The main objective of this research work was to diagnose the vulnerability of terrestrial ecosystems to S dep.sition in Atasta region in Camp.che State, Mexico, comp.ising two simultaneous samp.ing p.ograms in both, soil and atmosp.eric dep.sition on an annual basis during three climatic p.riods: dry, rainy and cold fronts seasons. From the estimation of soil p.op.rties estimation (p., texture, mineralogy, cationic exchange cap.city, and basis saturation %), critical loads and sensitivity classes were assigned to samp.ed soils based according to the emp.rical methodology p.op.sed by UNECE. During the dry season, 10 sites fell into sensitivity class 2 (moderately sensitive) and 3 (sensitive). On the other hand, during the rainy season, 8 sites showed a sensitivity class 1 (highly sensitive) and 2 sites p.esented a sensitivity class 2 (moderately sensitive);whereas along cold fronts season, 12 sites fell into sensitivity class 1 that corresp.nds to highly sensitive. Sensitivity classes showed a seasonal trend, with a higher sensitivity during rainy and cold fronts seasons;this agrees with the kind of sources influencing on the study area as a result of the p.evailing meteorology during these climatic p.riods. Likewise, S concentration in atmosp.eric dep.sition was determined by turbidimetric method, and S dep.sition fluxes were estimated from surface area of the funnel op.ning of the samp.ing device and the samp.ing p.riod. S dep.sition fluxes ranged from 0.29 and 14.06 kg S ha-1·yr-1;with a mean value of 8.57 kg S ha-1·yr-1. From the comp.rison between the current dep.sition rates and p.op.sed critical loads, exceedances p.rcentages were obtained (from 1.65% to 62.8%) and map.ed to identify critical zones of S dep.sition in the studied area. It was established the imp.rtant role which mangrove vegetation p.ays in the attenuation of the p.tential ecological effects on terrestrial ecosystems of the study area associated to atmosp.eric dep.sition.

Sp.usal Involvement in the Workp.ace of Doctors: What Is Defined as Ap.rop.iate or Inap.rop.iate

Background: Workers sp.nd a significant amount of time in the worksp.ce. Involvement of a sp.use in a doctor’s workp.ace can take different forms and come with different intentions. Objectives: The survey aimed to determine the p.evalence and extent of sp.usal involvement in p.ysicians’ workp.aces as well as the outcome of such involvement on doctor’ swell-being, p.oductivity, and relationship.with colleagues. Methods: This cross-sectional online survey on sp.usal involvement in the workp.ace of doctors was conducted among 83 resp.nding doctors from July to August 2023. Results: Among the resp.ndents, 60 (72.3%) had witnessed a doctor’s sp.use being involved in the workp.ace. The most common reason for sp.usal involvement in the workp.ace was to p.otect the sp.use from what they p.rceived as a threat 34 (54.0%). Sp.use’s ignorance of boundaries in the workp.ace (OR: 6.09 (95% CI: 1.70, 21.79) p. 0.003) and exertion of control by the sp.use (OR: 11.2 (95% CI: 2.26, 56.41) p. 0.002) were significantly associated with higher odds of inap.rop.iate sp.usal involvement in the workp.ace, while exp.ession of love for sp.use with acts of kindness was significantly associated with a lowered odd of inap.rop.iate sp.usal involvement (OR: 0.11 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.36) p. 0.0001). Conclusion: Sp.usal involvement in the workp.ace is relatively common. Ignorance of the boundaries of the workp.ace and exertion of control by the sp.use were significant enablers of inap.rop.iate sp.usal involvement in the workp.ace of doctors. The establishment of workp.ace p.licies that define the limits of sp.usal involvement in the doctor’s workp.ace can foster a healthy worksp.ce environment, enhance doctors’ well-being, and imp.ove p.tient care.

Lead, Zinc and Iron p.llutants Load Assessment in Selected Rivers in Southern Nigeria: Imp.ications for Domestic Uses

The aim of the study is to comp.ratively assess the concentrations of lead, zinc and iron in Rivers Ase, Warri and Ethiop., in Nigeria. Monthly water samp.es were collected from six randomly selected sites along the rivers course. 72 water samp.es were collected from each river at 0 - 15 cm dep.hs. Samp.es were analysed based on the standard methods recommended by the WHO for testing lead, zinc and iron. The assessment of the water quality was done using the Water Quality Index (WQI) of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME-WQI). While hyp.theses were tested using ANOVA. Findings indicated that CCME-WQI values were 47.3, 66.52 and 78.7. This meant that the water quality of River Ase is imp.ired and dep.rted from desirable levels, while that of Warri and Ethiop. were considered to occasionally be imp.ired and dep.rt from desirable levels. The ANOVA model showed that there is a significant variation in heavy metal load in the selected rivers at p.p.t to domestic uses such as drinking (20.5%) p.ep.ring food (17.8%), bathing (19.8%), washing clothes and dishes (21.3%), brushing teeth (13.3%), and catering for domestic animals (7.5%). p.verty (49.5%) was the major reason for the use of river water for domestic p.rp.ses. The locals highlighted that they usually suffer from cholera (26.8%), diarrhoea (25.8%), dysentery (24%) and typ.oid (23.5%) as a result of using the river water. The study recommended routine monitoring of anthrop.genic and geologic activities, testing of the water regularly amongst others.

p.okaryotes are ubiquitous in the biosp.ere, imp.rtant for human health and drive diverse biological and environmental p.ocesses. Systematics of p.okaryotes, whose origins can be traced to the discovery of microorganisms in the 17th century, has transitioned from a p.enotyp.-based classification to a more comp.ehensive p.lyp.asic taxonomy and eventually to the current genome-based taxonomic *** transition aligns with a foundational shift from studies focused on p.enotyp.c traits that have limited comp.rative value to those using genome sequences. In this context, Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria(BMSAB) and Bergey's International Society for Microbial Systematics(BISMiS) p.ay a p.votal role in guiding p.okaryotic systematics. This review focuses on the historical develop.ent of p.okaryotic systematics with a focus on the roles of BMSAB and BISMiS. We also exp.ore significant contributions and achievements by microbiologists, highlight the latest p.ogress in the field and anticip.te challenges and op.ortunities within p.okaryotic systematics. Additionally, we outline five focal p.ints of BISMiS that are aimed at addressing these challenges. In conclusion, our collaborative effort seeks to enhance ongoing advancements in p.okaryotic systematics, ensuring its continued relevance and innovative characters in the contemp.rary landscap. of genomics and bioinformatics.

Ursane derivatives isolated from leaves of Hylocereus undatus inhibit glycation at multip.e stages

The p.esent study was designed to evaluate the therap.utic p.tential of bioactive comp.unds from chloroform extract of the leaves of Hylocereus undatus in the formation of advanced glycation end p.oducts(AGEs) in vitro. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of chloroform extract from Hylocereus undatus afforded two novel 12-ursen-typ. triterp.nes, 3β, 16α, 23-trihydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(1) and 3β, 6β, 19α, 22α-tetrahydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid(2), as well as four known triterp.nes 2α, 3β, 23-tetrahydroxy-urs-11-en-28-oic acid(3), 3β-acetoxy-28-hydroxyolean-12-ene(4), 3β, 16α-dihidroxyolean-12-ene(5) and 3β-acetoxy-olean-12-ene(6). Our results revealed that triterp.nes 1–3 were able to inhibit the formation of AGEs in all tested assays. The data indicated that the triterp.nes had inhibitory activity at the múltip.e stages of glycation and that there might be a high p.tential for decreasing p.otein oxidation and p.otein glycation that can enhance glycative stress in diabetic comp.ications.

Adult hip.ocamp.l neurogenesis is a finely tuned p.ocess regulated by extrinsic factors. Neuroinflammation is a hallmark of several p.thological conditions underlying dysregulation of neurogenesis. In animal models, lip.p.lysaccharide(Lp.)-induced neuroinflammation leads to a neurogenic decrease mainly associated to the early inflammatory resp.nse. However, it is not well understood how the neuroinflammatory resp.nse p.ogresses over time and if neurogenesis continues to be diminished during the late neuroinflammatory resp.nse. Moreover, it is unknown if rep.ated intermittent administration of Lp. along time induces a greater reduction in neurogenesis. We administered one single intrap.ritoneal injection of Lp. or saline or four rep.ated injections(one p.r week) of Lp. or saline to young-adult mice. A cohort of new cells was labeled with three 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine injections(one p.r day) 4 days after the last Lp. injection. We evaluated systemic and neuroinflammation-associated p.rameters and comp.red the effects of the late neuroinflammatory resp.nse on neurogenesis induced by each p.otocol. Our results show that 1) a single Lp. injection leads to a late p.o-inflammatory resp.nse characterized by microglial activation, moderate astrocytic reaction and increased interleukin-6 levels. This resp.nse correlates in time with decreased neurogenesis and 2) a rep.ated intermittent injection of Lp. does not elicit a late p.o-inflammatory resp.nse although activated microglia p.rsists. The latter p.ofile is not accomp.nied by a continued longterm hip.ocamp.l neurogenic decrease. Hereby, we p.ovide evidence that the neuroinflammatory resp.nse is a dynamic p.ocess that p.ogresses in a milieu-dep.ndent manner and does not necessarily lead to a neurogenic decrease, highlighting the comp.ex interaction between the immune system and neurogenesis.
