Aims: The heritability of aerobic power and of the response to physical training has been shown in healthy subjects. β 1-Adrenergic receptor(β 1AR) function affects exercise performance. This study aims to investigate whether the Ser49Gly and Gly389Arg polymorphisms of the β 1AR gene or their haplotypes are associated with aerobic power or its response to physical training in coronary artery disease(CAD). Methods and results: Nine hundred and thirty-five biologically unrelated Caucasian patients with CAD who had exercised until exhaustion during graded bicycle testing at baseline and after completion of 3 months of exercise training from 1990 to 2001(n=1095) were eligible for inclusion in the CAREGENE(CArdiac REhabilitation and GENetics of Exercise performance) study. Polymorphisms were detected using the invader assay(ThirdWave TechnologiesTM,Madison,Wisconsin, USA). Patients with the Gly49Gly genotype had significantly higher covariate-adjusted aerobic power at baseline than those with Ser49Ser and Ser49Gly(P< 0.05). Adjusted aerobic power at baseline was highest in the Ser49-Gly389/Gly49-Gly389 and Gly49-Arg389/Gly49-Arg389 haplotype combinations. Aerobic power increased significantly(P< 0.001) with physical training. There was no association with the effect of physical training. Conclusion: Ser49Gly and haplotype combinations of Ser49Gly and Gly389Arg of the β 1AR gene are associated with aerobic power, but not with the response to physical training in patients with CAD included in the CAREGENE study.

Back.round: Evidence regarding the effectiveness of prenatal nutritional supplements has mainly considered anthropometric pregnancy outcomes. The effect on mark.rs of health and disease， such as offspring telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA content (mtDNAc) is unk.own. Objectives: We assessed the efficacy of maternal multiple micronutrient (MMN)-fortified balanced-energy protein (BEP) and iron-folic acid (IFA) supplementation on newborn TL as a secondary outcome and mtDNAc as a non-declared outcome. Design: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in rural Burk.na Faso， among pregnant females (15-40 years old) enrolled at k. of gestation. Mothers received either MMN-fortified BEP and IFA (intervention) or IFA only (control) throughout pregnancy. Whole arterial blood samples were collected from the umbilical cord of 104 control and 90 intervention group infants， respectively. Average relative TL and mtDNAc were measured using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Linear regression models were fitted to assess TL and mtDNAc differences across trial arms. Results: We found that a combined daily MMN-fortified BEP supplement and IFA tablet did not affect newborn TL [β = -0.010 (95% CI: -0.057， 0.036); P = 0.662] or mtDNAc [β = 0.065 (95% CI: -0.203， 0.073); P = 0.354]， as compared to an IFA tablet alone. These findings were confirmed (P > 0.05) by adjusting the regression models for potential prognostic factors of study outcomes at enrollment. Exploratory analyses indicated higher， but non-significantly different mtDNAc among children born either small-for-gestational age， low birthweight， or preterm. Conclusions: Newborns from mothers who received daily nutritional supplements across gestation did not have different relative TL or mtDNAc.

Myogenic contractions of the heart of the female blood-feeding insect, Rhodnius prolixus （Stal）, are inhibited by crude extracts of testes applied directly to isolated dorsal vessels. Dorsal vessels were observed with a stereo microscope and heart beats timed with a stopwatch. In normal Rhodnius saline, hearts contract at 14.8 4- 7.1 beats per minute （n = 45）. Crude extracts of the testes and the two male reproductive accessory organs （the opaque and transparent accessory glands） were prepared from previously frozen tissue by homogenizing 5-20 glands in a small glass homogenizer containing Rhodnius saline, centrifuging for 5 rain at 2 000 g, and collecting the supernatant. Testes extract as low as 1.0 glands per mL inhibit contractions whereas crude extracts of the opaque or transparent accessory glands have no consistent effect. We refer to this cardiac inhibitor as rhodtestolin （Rhodnius testis inhibitory factor）, and discuss its possible effects on the female during copulation.
