Evaluation of patient visual comfort and repeatability of refractive values in non-presbyopic healthy eyes

AIMTo evaluate the intra-operator repeatability in healthy subjects using the WAM-5500 auto-kerato/refractometer and the iTrace aberrometer, to compare the refractive values and the subjective refraction obtained with both devices and to determine which of these three spherocylindrical corrections allows the subject to achieve the best visual ***-two non-presbyopic healthy eyes of 42 subjects were enrolled in this prospective study. Refractive values were compared, evaluating the repeatability, the relationship between the methods and the best visual comfort ***, cylinder and axis results showed good intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC); the highest ICC was obtained using the spherical refraction with the autorefractometer and the aberrometer, achieving levels of 0.999 and 0.998, respectively. The power vector (PV) was calculated for each refraction method, and the results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between them (P>0.05). Direct comparison of PV measurements using the three methods showed that aberrometer refraction gave the highest values, followed by the subjective values; the autorefractometer gave the lowest values. The subjective method correction was most frequently chosen as the first selection. Equal values were found for the autorefractometer and the aberrometer as the second *** iTrace aberrometer and the WAM-5500 auto-kerato/refractometer showed high levels of repeatability in healthy eyes. Refractive corrections with the aberrometer, the autorefractometer and subjective methods presented similar results, but spherocylindrical subjective correction was the most frequently selected option. These technologies can be used as complements in refractive evaluation, but they should not replace subjective refraction.

A catalog of gliadin alleles:Polymorphism of 20th-century common wheat germplasm

A new, improved version of the catalog of 182 alleles at the six Gli loci of common wheat(*** L.) shown in electrophoregrams of 128 standard genotypes was used for analysis of1060 cultivars and lines bred in the 20 th century. The most frequent alleles in the studied germplasm occurred with frequencies of 18%–40%, with 30 unique alleles, one in each cultivar. Extremely high genetic diversity was found(average H for the six main Gli loci was0.870 ± 0.046), nearly identical in winter(H = 0.831) and spring(H = 0.856) wheats but differing among 28 groups of cultivars released in 22 countries. Each country or region was characterized by its own specific set of the most frequent Gli alleles, and the 28 cultivar groups formed five main relationship clusters if polymorphism at the six Gli loci was considered. However, different levels of similarity between groups of cultivars were found if polymorphism of the A, b, or D genomes of common wheat was tested separately. In general, the 20 th century germplasm of common wheat was differentiated and structured by country or region and cultivar type(spring or winter). Each elemental genome(in particular, A and D) contributed to the structure of the polymorphism studied. We propose that the structure of the wheat germplasm was a result of natural selection under the ecoclimatic conditions of cultivation specific to each country or region. As many as 27.4% of cultivars studied violated the requirement of the DUS rules for uniformity, being represented by mixtures of two or more closely related genotypes. However, the composition of a cultivar as a set of related but different genotypes may contribute to its adaptivity, and thereby to the known high plasticity of common wheat.

Soil and Rhizosphere Associated Fungi in Gray Mangroves(Avicennia marina) from the Red Sea—A Metagenomic Approach

Covering a quarter of the world＇s tropical coastlines and being one of the most threat- ened ecosystems, mangroves are among the major sources of terrestrial organic matter to oceans and harbor a wide microbial diversity. In order to protect, restore, and better understand these ecosystems, researchers have extensively studied their microbiology, yet few surveys have focused on their fungal communities, Our lack of knowledge is even more pronounced for specific fungal populations, such as the ones associated with the rhizosphere. Likewise, the Red Sea gray man- groves （Avicennia marina） remain poorly characterized, and understanding of their fungal commu- nities still relies on cultivation-dependent methods. In this study, we analyzed metagenomic datasets from gray mangrove rhizosphere and bulk soil samples collected in the Red Sea coast, to obtain a snapshot of their fungal communities. Our data indicated that Ascomycota was the dominant phylum （76%-85%）, while basidiomycota was less abundant （14%-24~）, yet present in higher numbers than usually reported for such environments. Fungal communities were more stable within the rhizosphere than within the bulk soil, both at class and genus level. This finding is consistent with the intrinsic patchiness in soil sediments and with the selection of specific microbial commu- nities by plant roots. Our study indicates the presence of several species on this mycobiome that were not previously reported as mangrove-associated. In particular, we detected representatives of several commercially-used fungi, e.g., producers of secreted cellulases and anaerobic producers of cellulosomes. These results represent additional insights into the fungal community of the gray mangroves of the Red Sea, and show that they are significantly richer than previously reported.

Lower Extremity Ulcers in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis

Introduction: Cutaneous manifestations of systemic sclerosis (SSc) include skin ulceration;4% - 12% of patients with SSc develop lower extremity ulcers of various etiologies. Limited data, significant morbidity, and substantial cost of wound care led us to undertake this study to describe and identify risk factors. Methods: After Institutional Review board approval, we identified 30 patients with SSc and lower extremity ulcers over a 10-year period at a single center with an SSc clinic, which were included in a descriptive analysis. Results: Median age of onset of lower extremity ulcers was 59.5 years (range 20 - 84). Ninety percent of patients were female, 60% were Caucasian, 63% had limited SSc, 13% diffuse SSc and 23% an overlap syndrome. Immunomodulators or steroids were prescribed in 53%;hypercoagulable state identified in 16%. Ulcers were attributed to venous stasis (27%), SSc (20%), trauma (20%), arterial disease (17%), and multifactorial/unknown (17%). In patients with ulcers attributed to SSc, age at onset was lower (45.5 vs 59.5 years). biopsies generally did not contribute to management. Multidisciplinary treatment was routine;20% required amputation, 10% endovascular intervention, 20% frequent surgical debridement, 10% hyperbaric oxygen, 26% local treatment and antibiotics and 13% received immunosuppression for wound treatment. Conclusion: Lower extremity ulcers are a serious clinical problem in patients with SSc. The clinical exam, venous dopplers, ankle-brachial indices and assessment of vascular risk factors helped define causality. In younger patients, ulcers were more frequently attributed to SSc and these patients were more likely to be on immunosuppressants/DMARDS, possibly indicating severe phenotype of SSc.

One extraction tool for in vitro-in vivo extrapolation?SPME-based metabolomics of in vitro 2D,3D,and in vivo mouse melanoma models

Distribution of DNA damage in the human sperm nucleus:implications of the architecture of the sperm head
