The objective of the present study was to evaluate the relation between maternal blood levels of selected toxic and potentially toxic elements （manganese （Mn）, copper （Cu）, zinc （Zn）, arsenic （As）, selenium （Se）, cadmium （Cd）, lead （Pb） and mercury （Hg）） and birth weight of their new-borns in a Slovenian population, taking into account maternal socio-demographic characteristics and dietary habits. 535 women from 12 regions of Slovenia were recruited at delivery. Maternal blood was collected at 1.5 months after birth. Associations between birth weight and a） predictors obtained through the questionnaires and b） levels of selected elements were tested using bivariate tests and multiple linear regression. Multiple regression models revealed maternal age as an additional predictor for birth weight and confirmed pre-pregnancy body mass, estimated gestational age and gender of the baby as the main predictors for birth weight. Mn in maternal blood was significantly and positively associated with birth weight. The positive association observed between birth weight and Mn in maternal blood could be explained by the essentiality of Mn in foetal development as an important cofactor in enzymereactions in bone formation and in metabolic regulation for amino acid, lipid, protein and carbohydrate levels.

目的充足的营养对早产儿至关重要。关于早期营养及其对后期生长影响的纵向信息十分有限。本研究的目的是确定早产儿的早期能量和蛋白质供应对青春期身体组成和血压的影响。方法本研究于2007～2008年对36例男性青少年(12.3±1.7岁)和25例女性青少年(11.5±1.8岁)进行了调查,他们系出生于1989年10月1日至1995年12月31日之间胎龄23～34周、出生体重<1850 g的早产儿。根据其出生后两周内的营养模式(肠内与肠外)、能量供应(每日<70千卡/kg与每日≥70千卡/kg)及蛋白质供应情况(每日超过2.5 g/kg≥5 d与每日超过2.5 g/kg<5 d),将调查对象分组,比较各组青春期身高、体重、血脂、血压等的差异。结果在控制出生体重和生理成熟度的基础上,婴儿期能量摄入每天≥70千卡/kg的青少年身高(163±11 cm)和体重(58±16 kg)大于能量摄入每天<70千卡/kg的青少年(身高156±11 cm,体重49±16 kg),差异有统计学意义(P<0.05);两组间血压与体脂百分含量未见明显差异。结论婴儿期较高的能量摄入与青春期的体格大小相关,但并不会构成不利的风险因素,如血压升高或体脂增加。

background and Aims:Hepatitis b virus(HbV)biomark-ers have been used for a better categorization of patients,even though the lack of simple algorithms and the impact of genotypes limit their *** aim was to assess the usefulness of noninvasive markers for the identification of HbV inactive carriers(ICs)in a single-point evaluation and to design a predictive model for their ***-ods:This retrospective-prospective study included 343 consecutive HbeAg-negative ***,analytical,and virological data were collected,and a liver biopsy was performed if *** were classified at the end of follow-up as ICs,chronic hepatitis b and gray zone.A pre-dictive model was constructed,and validated by 1000-boot-strap ***:After 39 months of follow-up,298 subjects were ICs,36 were chronic hepatitis b CHb,and nine were gray ***-nine(25.9%)individuals re-quired a liver *** HbV DNA hazard ratio(HR)6.0,pbV core-related antigen(HbcrAg)(HR 6.5,pbV DNA,HbcrAg,elastography),obtained by bootstrapping,yielded an area under the receiver operating characteris-tics(AUROC)of 0.925(95%CI:0.880-0.970,pbaseline HbV DNA,HbcrAg,and liver stiffness were in-dependently associated with the IC phase.A score including those variables identified ICs at a single-point evaluation,and might be applied to implement less intensive follow-up strategies.

The Eocene–Oligocene Southern Ocean is thought to have played a major role in cetacean ***,fossils from its heart—Antarctica—are rare,and come almost exclusively from the Eocene La Meseta and Submeseta formations of Marambio(Seymour)***,we provide a summary and update of this crucial fossil assemblage,and discuss its relevance in the broader context of cetacean *** date,Eocene specimens from Antarctica include basilosaurids,a group of archaic stem cetaceans that had already fully adapted to life in water;and the archaic toothed mysticete Llanocetus,the second oldest crown cetacean on record(ca.34 Ma).This Eocene co-occurrence of stem and crown cetaceans is highly unusual,and otherwise only observed in *** related,at least some of the Antarctic species appear to be different from,and notably larger than their Peruvian counterparts,suggesting an early differentiation of the high latitude cetacean fauna.

Physicochemical and Functional Characterization of <i>Mucuna pruries</i>Depigmented Starch for Potential Industrial Applications

Starch is a very important biopolymer in the food industry. The velvet bean (M. pruriens) is an excellent potential starch source containing approximately 520 g starch per kg. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical and functional properties of velvet bean depigmented starch. The starch granules appear oval and spherical shaped. The colour registered L*, a*, b* values of 44.9, 0.324 and 0.341 respectively. The chemical composition registered values of moisture, ash, fat, protein, fibre and NFE of 110.5, 5.8, 5.7, 0.0, 34 and 954.5 g/kg respectively, as well as amylose levels of 215.3 g/kg. Gelatinization onset (To), peak (Tp) and final (Tf) temperatures were of 74.23°C, 80.57°C and 86.39°C. The solubility (3.1% - 16.2%), swelling power (SP) (2.86% - 16.17%) and water absorption capacity (WAC) (2.67 - 15.95 g water/g starch) were directly correlated to temperature (60°C - 90°C). The enthalpy values (4.10 - 13.47 j/g) were directly correlated to the time (1 - 21 days). The retrogradation increased as time increased. The viscosity of M. pruriens depigmented starch decreased slightly during the heating stages and then increased during cooling and the refrigeration and freezing stability registered syneresis ranges from 17.65 to 23.18 mL/50mL and from 16.4 to 22.6 mL/50mL respectively, indicating that the depigmented starch was unstable in heating-cooling processes.

Dietary Organic and Inorganic Selenium on Liver Glycogen and Lactate, pHu, Color and Drip Loss of Chicken Pectoralis and Gastrocnemius Muscles

The effect of selenium supplementation in finishing broiler diets on meat quality was studied. A corn soya based diet was supplemented with 0.3 ppm of Se from an organic (Seleno methionine;Se-Met) or inorganic source (sodium selenite;Se-Na) and offered to Rossmale chickens from thirty five to fifty two days old. body weight and feed consumption were recorded during the experimental period. Immediately post sacrifice liver was removed and weight was recorded. The liver glycogen and lactate content was measured. Carcass yield and abdominal fat were determined. At 24 hours post mortem, pHu, colour L*, a*, b*, H°, C*, and drip loss of the Pectoralis and Gastrocnemius muscles were determined. Se-Met supplementation significantly decreases daily food intake. Se-Na significantly increases liver glycogen and lactate content at 3 minutes post mortem. Se-Met and Se-Na significantly increase pHu as compared to the control diet. Also a Se-Met provoked a darker (lower L*) and a redder (higher a*) and a decreased tone (lower H°) in Pectoralis. Se-Met and Se-Na significantly decrease the drip loss in Pectoralis and Gastrocnemius at 24 hours post mortem. We conclude that selenium supplementation decreases food intake and improves meat quality by improving colour and decreasing drip loss, likely by a modulation of reserve of glycogen in liver. The difference among the organic and inorganic sources is not clear and requires further investigation.

background:None of the published studies involving cancer cachexia experimental models have included a measure of the severity of the syndrome like the scoring system previously developed for human *** aim of the present investigation was to define and validate a cachexia score usable in both rat and mouse tumor ***:In order to achieve this goal,we included in the study one rat model(Yoshida AH‐130ascites hepatoma)and two mouse models(Lewis lung carcinoma and Colon26 carcinoma).The Animal cachexia score(ACASCO)includes five components:(a)body and muscle weight loss,(b)inflammation and metabolic disturbances,(c)physical performance,(d)anorexia,and(e)quality of life measured using discomfort symptoms and behavioral ***:Using the ACASCO values,three cut‐off values were estimated by applying hierarchical cluster *** groups were originally described,one exactly below the observed mean,a second exactly over the mean,and two other groups adjusted to every cue(inferior and superior).The three cut‐off values were estimated through maximization of the classification *** was accomplished by using a similarity matrix based on the metric properties of the variables and assuming multinormal *** results show that the four groups were:no cachexia,mild cachexia,moderate cachexia and advanced ***:The results obtained allow us to conclude that the score could be very useful as an endpoint in pre‐clinical studies involving therapeutic strategies for cancer *** potential usefulness of ACASCO relates to the primary endpoint in pre‐clinical cancer cachexia drug evaluations.

AIM:To study the prognosis(recurrence and mortality)of patients with ischemic colitis(IC).METHODS:This study was conducted in four Spanish hospitals,participants in the Ischemic Colitis in Spain study We analyzed prospectively 135 consecutive patients who met criteria for definitive or probable IC according to brandt criteria,and follow up these patients during the next five years,***-term results(recurrence and mortality)were evaluated retrospectively after a median interval of 62 mo(range54-75 mo).RESULTS:Estimated IC recurrence rates were 2.9%,5.1%,8.1%and 9.7%at years 1,2,3 and 5 years,***-year survival was 69%(93 of 135)and 24%(10 of 42 patients)died for causes related to the *** these 10 patients,8 died in their first episode at hospital(4 had gangrenous colitis and 4 fulminant colitis)and 2 due to ***:The five-year recurrence rate of IC was *** the other hand,mortality during follow-up was high and was not associated with ischemic colitis.

Effect of Cyclooxygenase-2 blockade on Renal Hypertrophy Development during Early Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of diabetic nephropathy;the early phase of diabetes is associated with kidney growth and hyperfiltration;several factors modulate these changes, among them, prostaglandins and angiotensin II. Previous studies have shown that cyclooxygenase-2 is implicated in experimental models of diabetes. The aim of this work was to study the effect of celecoxib treatment on renal hypertrophy development in early diabetes mellitus. In our rats with early streptozotocin-induced diabetes there was renal hypertrophy, and increased renal expression of cyclooxygenase-2, AT1 receptor, and transforming growth factor-β1. Treatment with the selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor celecoxib reduced the urinary excretion of prostaglandins such as prostaglandin E2, 6-keto prostaglandin F1α, and thromboxane b2. Kidney hypertrophy was reversed by the treatment, and the renal expression of cyclooxygenase-2, AT1 receptor, and transforming growth factor-β1 decreased. The renoprotective effects of celecoxib were independent of the changes in plasma glucose levels. These results confirm that cyclooxygenase-2 inhibition in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes decrease renal hypertrophy;this effect in turn, may be mediated by reduction of the expression of AT1 receptors and transforming growth factor-b1 in the kidney.
