How can the home range of the Lesser Kestrel be affected by a large civil infrastructure?

Background: The loss of traditional agropastoral systems, with the consequent reduction of foraging habitats and prey availability, is one of the main causes for the fast decline of Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni). To promote the conservation of the Lesser Kestrel and their habitats, here we studied the foraging activities patterns of this species during the breeding season. Methods: Between 2016 and 2017, we captured and tagged 24 individuals with GPS dataloggers of two colonies in Villena (eastern Spain) with the goals of estimating the home range sizes of males and females, evaluating the differences in spatial ecology between two colonies located in different environments: natural and beside a thermosolar power plant, and investigating habitat selection. Results: Considering the distances before July 15, date until which it can be assured that the chicks remain in the nest in our colonies, there were significant differences with the distances to the nest in relation to the colony of the individuals: Lesser Kestrels from the thermosolar power plant colony had a greater average distance. The average size of home range areas was 13.37 km2 according to 95% kernel, and there were also significant differences in relation to colony: the individuals from the thermosolar power plant colony used a larger area (22.03 ± 4.07 km^2) than those from the other colony (9.66 ± 7.68 km^2). Birds showed preference for non-irrigated arable lands and pastures. Conclusions: Despite the differences between the two colonies, the home ranges of both are smaller or similar to those observed in other European colonies. This suggests that Lesser Kestrels continue to have adequate habitats and a good availability of prey. Therefore, the extension and proximity of the plant does not imply a great alteration, which highlights the importance of maintaining the rest of the territory in good conditions to minimize the impact.

Although only 10-15%of liver cancers are cholangiocarcinomas(CCAs),which derive from the epithelial cells of the biliary tree,these cancers constitute a serious and growing health problem *** rate of mortality due to this tumor is very high because CCA usually appears in aged people and very often,in more than 70%of cases,are diagnosed late because of:(I)their anatomical localization in a big organ like the liver;(II)the lack of specific symptoms during most time of their development;and(III)the absence of available accurate,specific and sensitive biomarkers(1).These characteristics reduce the rate of success of surgical resection,which is the only curative option for CCA patients,because the response of this aggressive cancer to the available pharmacological armamentarium is extremely feeble(2).This justifies the interest of many groups to identify non-invasive markers to achieve early diagnosis that also permit to distinguish CCA from non-malignant biliary diseases and from hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC),the most frequent liver cancer,which derives from hepatocytes(3).

The interest of Western medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) as a source of drug leads/new drugs to treat diseases without available efficient therapies has been dramatically augmented in the last decades by the extensive work and the outstanding findings achieved within this kind of medicine. The practice of TCM over thousands of years has equipped scientists with substantial experience with hundreds of plants that led to the discovery of artemisinin(qinghaosu), which is extracted from the medicinal plant Artemisia annua L.(qinghao). The unexpected success of artemisinin in combating malaria has drawn strong attention from the scientific community towards TCM. Artemisinin was discovered by Youyou Tu in 1972. Since then, several novel pharmacological activities based on the well-known properties of the sesquiterpene lactone structure with the oxepane ring and an endoperoxide bridge have been unravelled. Beyond malaria, artemisinin and its derivatives(artemisinins) exert profound activities towards other protozoans(Leishmania, Trypanosoma, amoebas, Neospora caninum, and Eimeria tenella), trematodes(Schistosoma, liver flukes), and viruses(human cytomegalovirus, hepatitis B and C viruses). Less clear is the effect against bacteria and fungi. Based on the promising results of artemisinin and the first generation derivatives(artesunate, artemether, arteether), novel drug development strategies have been *** included the synthesis of acetal-and non-acetal-type artemisinin dimeric molecules as well as developing nanotechnological approaches, ***-based liposomes, niosomes, micelles, solid lipid nanocarriers, nanostructured lipid carriers, nanoparticles, fullerenes and nanotubes. Greenlight Photoselective Vaporisation of the Prostate in 133 High Surgical Risk Patients: A 5-Year Outcome Study

Greenlight photoselective vaporisation of the prostate (GPVP) is progressively becoming an established treatment in patients with LUTS because it is a minimally invasive technique that achieves efficient haemostasis, making it the ideal technique for patients at high surgical risk. Material and Methods: To study of 133 patients with an ASA surgical risk score of 3 or 4, undergoing GPVP, with an analysis of perioperative outcome, IPSS, Qmax, IIEF-5 and complications during a five-year follow-up. Results: At 5 years the mean annual improvement in IPSS was stable, and at 5 years there was a 15.2 point improvement versus the preoperative score (p 0.05). The Qmax showed an improvement of 14.9 ml/sec and was maintained at five years after surgery (p 0.05). No patients were transfused or suffered urinary incontinence. 2.25% suffered major complications and there were no deaths. 3.1% of patients suffered de novo urgency. In the 5-year follow-up, five patients had to be reoperated. The quality of sexual health assessed by IIEF-5 before the procedure was scored at 14 points;the 5-year follow-up covering the preoperative period and all revisions did not show any worsening in the IIEF-5 score (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Due to its physical characteristics, in our opinion GPVP is now the treatment of choice in patients at high surgical risk. In our series, the risk of major/minor complications and transfusions was much lower than the same risks in conventional techniques. The objective results (Qmax and quality of life questionnaire) are equivalent to conventional techniques and persist over a 5-year follow-up.
