Siderophore-Producing Rhizobacteria as a Promising Tool for Empowering Plants to Cope with Iron Limitation in Saline Soils:A Review

Iron(Fe) bioavailability to plants is reduced in saline soils;however, the exact mechanisms underlying this effect are not yet completely understood. Siderophore-expressing rhizobacteria may represent a promising alternative to chemical fertilizers by simultaneously tackling salt-stress effects and Fe limitation in saline soils. In addition to draught, plants growing in arid soils face two other major challenges: high salinity and Fe deficiency. Salinity attenuates growth, affects plant physiology, and causes nutrient imbalance,which is, in fact, one of the major consequences of saline stress. Iron is a micronutrient essential for plant development, and it is required by several metalloenzymes involved in photosynthesis and respiration. Iron deficiency is associated with chlorosis and low crop productivity. The role of microbial siderophores in Fe supply to plants and the effect of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR) on the mitigation of saline stress in crop culture are well documented. However, the dual effect of siderophore-producing PGPR, both on salt stress and Fe limitation, is still poorly explored. This review provides a critical overview of the combined effects of Fe limitation and soil salinization as challenges to modern agriculture and intends to summarize some indirect evidence that argues in favour of siderophore-producing PGPR as biofertilization agents in salinized soils. Recent developments and future perspectives on the use of PGPR are discussed as clues to sustainable agricultural practices in the context of present and future climate change scenarios.

A catalog of gliadin alleles:Polymorphism of 20th-century common wheat germplasm

A new, improved version of the catalog of 182 alleles at the six Gli loci of common wheat(*** L.) shown in electrophoregrams of 128 standard genotypes was used for analysis of1060 cultivars and lines bred in the 20 th century. The most frequent alleles in the studied germplasm occurred with frequencies of 18%–40%, with 30 unique alleles, one in each cultivar. Extremely high genetic diversity was found(average H for the six main Gli loci was0.870 ± 0.046), nearly identical in winter(H = 0.831) and spring(H = 0.856) wheats but differing among 28 groups of cultivars released in 22 countries. Each country or region was characterized by its own specific set of the most frequent Gli alleles, and the 28 cultivar groups formed five main relationship clusters if polymorphism at the six Gli loci was considered. However, different levels of similarity between groups of cultivars were found if polymorphism of the A, B, or D genomes of common wheat was tested separately. In general, the 20 th century germplasm of common wheat was differentiated and structured by country or region and cultivar type(spring or winter). Each elemental genome(in particular, A and D) contributed to the structure of the polymorphism studied. We propose that the structure of the wheat germplasm was a result of natural selection under the ecoclimatic conditions of cultivation specific to each country or region. As many as 27.4% of cultivars studied violated the requirement of the DUS rules for uniformity, being represented by mixtures of two or more closely related genotypes. However, the composition of a cultivar as a set of related but different genotypes may contribute to its adaptivity, and thereby to the known high plasticity of common wheat.

This review aimed to investigate the technological potential of grape pomace for application in the meat industry,approaching the compounds of interest and presenting the challenges of its application in meat *** pomace contains bioactive and nutritional compounds with beneficial properties for maintaining the physical-chemical,sensory,and nutritional quality of meat and its *** studies have reported the presence of fiber,amino acids,essential fatty acids and minerals capable of increasing the nutritional value of meat products and promoting a nutrient supply when associated with animal ***,the bioactive composition of grape pomace has anthocyanins,flavanols and phenolic acids capable of increasing the shelf life of meat products,inhibiting microbial development,and delaying the oxidative processes responsible for the deterioration of sensory and nutritional *** use of nano and microencapsulation technologies and the use of active packaging as carriers of grape pomace extracts enhance their application in meat and meat *** technologies,applied individually or together,promote the controlled release of bioactive compounds during the storage and mask undesirable flavors promoted by phenolic *** addition to the technological potential,the use of grape pomace by the meat industry meets the current demand for the use of natural additives and is in accordance with the sustainable development objectives established by the United Nations Organization,reducing environmental impacts and allowing the obtaining molecules with high added value from industrial waste.

This study aimed to identify the chemical composition of essential oil from fruits(EOAF)and the hexanic crude extract from aerial parts(At-Hex)of atemoya(Annona cherimola x Annona squamosa),a hybrid belonging to the Annonaceae *** and antimicrobial activity was also *** was obtained by hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus,and their composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)*** was tested against human tumor cell lines HCT-116(colon carcinoma),SF-295(glioblastoma),OVCAR-8(ovarian carcinoma)and HL60(leukemia)using 3-(4,5-dimethyl-2-thiazolyl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide(MTT)assay,while antimicrobial activity was conducted by bioauthography method against eleven microorganisms ***-four compounds were identified in the EOAF and twenty-nine in *** monoterpenes linalool(25.70%),α-pinene(10.38%),β-pinene(9.12%),transocimene(7.43%),and the sesquiterpene bicyclogermacrene(12.58%)were the major constituents of EOAF,whereas the sesquiterpene spathulenol(13.91%)was the main compound of ***-Hex showed a high cytotoxicity against SF-295(glioblastoma).These findings show an important chemotaxonomic contribution for the Annonaceae family,mainly for the Annona *** proved to be a promising source of substances with potential cytotoxic activity.

Extracts of the seaweed Bifurcaria bifurcata display antifungal activity against human dermatophyte fungi

Bifurcaria bifurcata is a seaweed of the Order Fucales(Ochrophyta,Phaeophyceae)that can be found all year round along the Portuguese Atlantic *** it is considered edible in some countries,its biotechnological potential has not yet been assessed in detail and here we report its antimicrobial potential against human dermatophyte *** samples were harvested from Baleal Island(Peniche,Portugal)harvested in winter(BbPe);from Aguda Beach(Arcozelo,Vila Nova de Gaia,Portugal),harvested in autumn(BbAg)and a sample obtained by culturing the Aguda sample under laboratory conditions(BbLC).A broth macrodilution assay was applied to determine the MIC(minimum inhibitory concentration)and MLC(minimum lethal concentration)of the *** *** show that the BbPe MeOH extracts were the most effective and had higher antifungal activity against all the tested dermatophyte strains than the BbLC and BaAg extracts[Epidermophyton floccosum FF9(100–200μg/mL MIC;200μg/mL MLC),Microsporum canis FF1(400μg/mL MIC;≥400μg/mL MLC),Trichophyton mentagrophytes FF7(100μg/mL MIC;>800μg/mL MLC),*** CECT 2908(800μg/mL MIC;≥800μg/mL MLC),*** *** CECT 2958(800μg/mL MIC;≥800μg/mL MLC),*** CECT 2794(200μg/mL MIC;≥400μg/mL MLC)].In fact,only *** FF9 was sensitive to BbAg and BbLC MeOH *** our knowledge,this is the first report of antifungal activity of *** against human dermatophyte fungi.

The aim of this investigation was to assess the effect of yellow mombin bagasse extract(YMBE),alone or combined with commercial cryoprotectants,on the quality changes during cold storage of surimi and surimi gel prepared with the cutting by-product of green weakfish(Cynoscion virescens).Four treatments were elaborated:SC(surimi control),SE(surimi with addition of 1%extract),SCP(surimi with the addition of 4%sorbitol+4%sucrose)and SECP(surimi with addition of 1%extract+4%sorbitol+4%sucrose).The addition of the extract was effective in maintaining the whiteness of the surimi and its gel throughout *** the end of 12 days of cold storage,the surimi gel prepared with SE treatment presented high whiteness compared to the control *** inclusion of 1%YMBE in isolation or combined with commercial cryoprotectants showed a positive effect on the inhibition of lipid and protein oxidation of *** conclusion,YMBE extract is a promising alternative to be used as a natural food preservative in surimi and surimi gel.

Characterization of soil fauna under the influence of mercury atmospheric deposition in Atlantic Forest, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The increasing levels of mercury（Hg） found in the atmosphere arising from anthropogenic sources, have been the object of great concern in the past two decades in industrialized countries. Brazil is the seventh country with the highest rate of mercury in the *** major input of Hg to ecosystems is through atmospheric deposition（wet and dry）, being transported in the atmosphere over large distances. The forest biomes are of strong importance in the atmosphere/soil cycling of elemental Hg through foliar uptake and subsequent transference to the soil through litter, playing an important role as sink of this element. Soil microarthropods are keys to understanding the soil ecosystem, and for such purpose were characterized by the soil fauna of two Units of Forest Conservation of the state of the Rio de Janeiro, inwhich one of the areas suffer quite interference from petrochemicals and industrial anthropogenic activities and other area almost exempts of these perturbations. The results showed that soil and litter of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil tend to stock high mercury concentrations, which could affect the abundance and richness of soil fauna, endangering its biodiversity and thereby the functioning of ecosystems.
