Studies on carcinogenesis continue to provide new information about different disease-related *** others,much research has focused on the involvement of cancer stem cells(CSCs)in tumor initiation and *** the similarities and dif-ferences between CSCs and physiological stem cells(SCs)allows for a better understanding of cancer ***,it was shown that stem cell identity is partially governed by the Kruppel-associated box domain zinc finger proteins(KRAB-ZFPs),the biggest family of tran-scription *** KRAB-ZFP factors exert a known effect in tumor cells,acting as tumor suppressor genes(TSGs)or oncogenes,yet their role in CSCs is still poorly ***,we review recent studies regarding the influence of KRAB-ZFPs and their cofactor pro-tein TRIM28 on CSCs phenotype,stemness features,migration and invasion potential,metas-tasis,and expression of parental markers.

This paper focuses on Chinese sources suggested for a narrative medicine(NM)program,called *** Lauren Small established AfterWards in 2014 and has been coordinating it since out of the Pediatrics Department at Johns Hopkins *** early 2019,she started giving a series of lectures and workshops about AfterWards to Chinese medical educators and clinicians in Beijing and *** created an AfterWards Facilitator’s Guide based on Western-language sources for workshop *** also started to organize with Jiang Yuhong(Peking Union Medical College)a workshop for Chinese colleagues to be held at Johns Hopkins Medicine in October *** invited the author to *** idea was hatched then to develop Chinese source materials following the AfterWards structure for an updated Facilitator’s Guide that Dr Small had initially written.A typical one-hour AfterWards session consists of a specific five-part structure:a literary text or artwork,an associated theme,discussion topics,a writing exercise,and shared *** the content of the program always changes from session to session,the basic structure remains the *** paper summarizes the types of Chinese sources and their related narrative-medicine themes that were originally selected for inclusion in the updated AfterWards Facilitator’s Guide intended for Chinese *** sources about coping with sick family members,aging,and illness ranged from the textual(classical Chinese poems on aging and diagnostic forms for training students)and visual(premodern Chinese paintings and murals of medical encounters)to the fictive(novels)and performative(contemporary Asian-American film in English and Chinese-language film and documentaries).

This short review comments on the recently published work of Ishimoto et al regarding the opposing effects of fructokinase C and A isoforms on fructoseinduced metabolic syndrome in mice. The framework for the commentary is the preexisting background of epidemiological and experimental data regarding the association between ingestion of fructose, as present in sweetened beverages, and the development of metabolic syndrome. The work of Ishimoto et al clearly confirms the negative effect of fructose on lipid and glucose metabolism, independently from the amount of energy provided by the ingested sugar. It also confirms the absolute requirement of liver fructose metabolism, driven by fructokinase activity, in order to develop the full spectrum of metabolic syndrome alterations.

Shifting focus from the patient’s body to the healer’s body,this essay focuses on how Chinese physicians instrumentalized their bodies to heal(ie,body-as-technology)and their hands to think with(ie,hand-memory techniques or simply,hand mnemonics).When physicians used their hands to memorize concepts related to clinical practice,calculate with time variables,and carry out ritual gestures intended to reduce risk,improve fortune,and even cure,their hands became extensions of their *** essay has three parts that follow the discovery process of the author’s research on hand-memory techniques found in Chinese medical *** first part“Divination and Revelation”explains the significance of how the author first learned about Chinese divination practices that used hand *** second part“Original Frame”introduces the scholarship on arts of memory in Europe that informed interpretations of the earliest hand mnemonics found in Chinese medical *** third part“Expanded Frame”deploys some concepts from cognitive science to help situate Chinese medical hand mnemonics more broadly as an example of extended *** essay concludes with an important distinction:sometimes Chinese healers’hands were used separately from their bodies to think through things and sometimes hand and body had to be integrated in order for the healer’s body-as-technology to act as a therapeutically effective instrument.

This article summarizes the collaboration between two historians of medicine on Sino-European medical *** Pomata researches the history of medicine in early modern Europe and marta Hanson researches the history of medicine in early modern *** following covers the concept of epistemic genres that Pomata first developed out of her research on the history of the genres historia,observationes,recipes,medical cases,and the commentary in *** connected these genres variously to empiricism,erudition,scientific observation,norm-making,and recording *** paper then evaluates how Pomata and Hanson used epistemic genres as a method for doing cross-cultural research on 17th-18th-century Sino-European medical *** then wrote a comparative history of the medical case in Europe and *** article concludes with how Hanson applied the distinction of epistemic genres to analyze the history of Chinese medicine from a new perspective.

Deep neural network has proven to be very effective in computer vision *** convolutional network can learn the most suitable features of certain images without specific measure functions and outperform lots of traditional image processing *** adversarial network(GAN)is becoming one of the highlights among these deep neural *** is capable of generating realistic images which are imperceptible to the human vision system so that the generated images can be directly used as intermediate medium for many *** promising application of using GAN generated images would be image concealing which requires the embedded image looks like not being tampered to human vision system and also undetectable to most *** synthesizing has drawn lots of attention in computer vision field and is used for image concealing in steganography and *** traditional methods which use synthesized textures for information hiding mainly select features and mathematic functions by human metrics and usually have a low embedding *** paper takes advantage of the generative network and proposes an approach for synthesizing complex texture-like image of arbitrary size using a modified deep convolutional generative adversarial network(DCGAN),and then demonstrates the feasibility of embedding another image inside the generated texture while the difference between the two images is nearly invisible to the human eyes.

Plants have evolved intricate signaling cascades to rapidly and effectively respond to biotic and abiotic challenges. The precise timing of these responses enables optimal resource reallocation to maintain the balance between stress adaptation and growth. Thus, an in-depth understanding of the immediate and long-term mechanisms regulating resource allocation is critical in deciphering how plants withstand environmental challenges. To date however, understanding of this tradeoff has focused on the amplitude of long-term responses, rather than the timing of rapid stress responses. This review presents current knowledge on kinetics of secondary messengers involved in regulation of rapid and general stress responses, followed by rapid stress responsive transduction machinery, and finally the transcriptional response of a functional general stress responsive cis-element. Within this context we discuss the role of timing of initial peak activation and later oscillating peak responses, and explore hormonal and stress signaling crosstalk confounding greater understanding of these cascades.
