Background: Over the last decades, many forest simulators have been developed for the forests of individual European countries. The underlying growth models are usually based on national datasets of varying size, obtained from National Forest Inventories or from long-term research plots. Many of these models include country-and location-specific predictors, such as site quality indices that may aggregate climate, soil properties and topography effects. Consequently, it is not sensible to compare such models among countries, and it is often impossible to apply models outside the region or country they were developed for. However, there is a clear need for more generically applicable but still locally accurate and climate sensitive simulators at the European scale, which requires the development of models that are applicable across the European continent. The purpose of this study is to develop tree diameter increment models that are applicable at the European scale, but still locally accurate. We compiled and used a dataset of diameter increment observations of over 2.3 million trees from 10 National Forest Inventories in Europe and a set of 99 potential explanatory variables covering forest structure, weather, climate, soil and nutrient ***: Diameter increment models are presented for 20 species/species groups. Selection of explanatory variables was done using a combination of forward and backward selection methods. The explained variance ranged from10% to 53% depending on the species. Variables related to forest structure(basal area of the stand and relative size of the tree) contributed most to the explained variance, but environmental variables were important to account for spatial patterns. This paper offers a systematic literature review of real-time detection and classification of Power Quality Disturbances(PQDs).A particular focus is given to voltage sags and notches,as voltage sags cause huge economic losses while research on voltage notches is still very incipient.A systematic method based on scientometrics,text similarity and the analytic hierarchy process is proposed to structure the review and select the most relevant literature.A biblio-metric analysis is then performed on the bibliographic data of the literature to identify relevant statistics such as the evolution of publications over time,top publishing countries,and the distribution by relevant topics.A set of articles is subsequently selected to be critically *** critical review is structured in steps for real-time detection and classification of PQDs,namely,input data preparation,preprocessing,transformation,feature extraction,feature selec-tion,detection,classification,and *** associated with the type of disturbance(s)addressed in the literature are also explored throughout the review,including the perspectives of those studies aimed at multiple PQDs,or specifically focused on voltage sags or voltage *** real-time performance of the reviewed tools is also ***,unsolved issues are discussed,and prospects are highlighted.

Liming reduces soil phosphorus availability but promotes yield and P uptake in a double rice cropping system

Liming is often applied to alleviate soil acidification and increase crop yield on acidic soils,but its effect on soil phosphorus(P)availability is unclear,particularly in rice *** objective of this study was to examine the effect of liming on rice production,yield and P uptake in a three-year field experiment in a double rice cropping system in subtropical *** also conducted an incubation experiment to investigate the direct effect of liming on soil available P and phosphatase activities on paddy soils in the absence of *** the incubation experiment,liming reduced soil P availability(measured as Olsenextractable P)by 14–17%and inhibited the activity of soil acid ***,lime application increased grain yield,biomass,and P uptake in the *** increased grain yield and P uptake more strongly for late rice(26 and 21%,respectively)than for early rice(15 and 8%,respectively).Liming reduced the concentration of soil available P in the field as well,reflecting the increase in rice P uptake and the direct negative effect of liming on soil P *** together,these results suggest that by stimulating rice growth,liming can overcome direct negative effects on soil P availability and increase plant P uptake in this acidic paddy soil where P is not the limiting factor.

Sibling cannibalism is relatively common in nature,but its evolution in birds and certain other vertebrates with extended parental care had been ***,however,we demonstrate its regular occurrence in two European populations of the Eurasian hoopoe(Upupa epops)and explore possible adaptive and non-adaptive *** showed that sibling cannibalism was more frequently detected in Spain(51.7%)than in Austria(5.9%).In these two populations,the hoopoes laid similar clutch sizes,resulting in similar fledging production,but hatching failures were more frequent in the northern ***,having more nestlings condemned to die in the southern population may explain the higher incidence of sibling *** accordance with this interpretation,hatching span and failure,but not breeding date,explained the probability of sibling cannibalism in the Spanish hoopoes,while all three variables predicted brood reduction ***,experimental food supply reduced the probability of sibling cannibalism,but not the intensity of brood ***,females allocated fewer resources to the smallest nestlings when they were going to starve,but not necessarily when they were going to be used as food for their *** results suggest that hoopoes produce extra eggs that,in the case of reduced hatching failure and food scarcity,produce nestlings that are used to feed older *** findings provide the first evidence that sibling cannibalism occurs regularly in a bird species,thus expanding our evolutionary understanding of clutch size,hatching asynchrony,parent-offspring conflict,infanticide,and sibling cannibalism in the animal kingdom.

*** strongest locus which associated with type 2 diabetes(T2D)by the common variant rs7903146 is the transcription factor 7-like 2 gene(TCF7L2).We aimed to quantify the interaction of diet/lifestyle interventions and the genetic effect of TCF7L2 rs7903146 on glycemic traits,body weight,or waist circumference in overweight or obese adults in several randomized controlled trials(RCTs).*** October 2016 to May 2018,a large collaborative analysis was performed by pooling individualparticipant data from 7 *** RCTs reported changes in glycemic control and adiposity of the variant rs7903146 after dietary/lifestyle-related interventions in overweight or obese *** treatment interaction models which used the genetic effect encoded by the allele dose and common covariates were applicable to individual participant data in all *** the joint analysis,a total of 7 eligible RCTs were included(n=4,114).Importantly,we observed a significant effect modification of diet/lifestyle-related interventions on the TCF7L2 variant rs7903146 and changes in fasting *** with the control group,diet/lifestyle interventions were related to lower fasting glucose by-3.06(95%CI,-5.77 to-0.36)mg/dL(test for heterogeneity and overall effect:I^(2)=45:1%,p<0:05;z=2:20,p=0:028)per one copy of the TCF7L2 T risk ***,regardless of genetic risk,diet/lifestyle interventions were associated with lower waist ***,there was no significant change for diet/lifestyle interventions in other glycemic control and adiposity traits per one copy of TCF7L2 risk *** findings suggest that carrying the TCF7L2 T risk allele may have a modestly greater benefit for specific diet/lifestyle interventions to improve the control of fasting glucose in overweight or obese adults.
