The single-pollutant air quality management strategy carried out for the past 50 years has resulted in a continuous reduction in source emissions and ambient concentrations in developed countries. However,air pollution consists of a mixture of different substances,and the effects of this mixture may be greater than the sum of their parts. Few source types emit a single pollutant,and more cost-effective and beneficial effects might be achieved by controlling this mixture rather than its individual components. A prime example is the integration of climate-forcing pollutants into current air quality management systems. As the effects of individual pollutants become more difficult to detect,a framework for multi-pollutant air quality management must be developed. This framework should include broad assessment tools that quantify co-benefits of multiple pollutant reductions on health,material and ecosystem damage,visibility degradation,and global warming. Emissions need to be assessed over a product’s entire life cycle for global air quality management,but these must be integrated with local and regional assessments to quantify human exposure and health risks. Several indicators and software tools are currently used for these purposes,but their input data and simplifying assumptions are poorly documented and uncertainties are large. On a more practical basis,movement toward multi-pollutant air quality management could begin with adapting more cost-effective multi-pollutant measurement technologies to source and ambient monitoring. current test methods are dominated by single pollutant techniques that are limiting and costly. Many advanced air quality models already address a large number of pollutants,but in current use they are optimized for a single pollutant and only applied to situations that show excessive levels for that pollutant. Lithography and Fabrication of Frictional Tiers on Poly(Dimethylsiloxane) Using Atomic Force Microscopy

This study investigates controlled micro/nano manipulation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Lithographic results revealed stick-slip phenomena along the slow scan direction. Varying the normal loading force, scan size, scan number and contact conditions allowed the control of certain lithographic outcomes e.g., channel spacing. The PDMS surface experienced significant in-plane deformation in response to the tip-induced lateral force. This displacement increased with increasing loading force, creating greater spacing between channels in the slow scan direction. Simultaneous generation of a lateral displacement in the fast scan direction caused a decrease in channel length with increasing loading force due to an increase in static friction with normal force, resulting in a greater surface relaxation, and shorter track length of dynamic friction. By controlling both the loading force and the number of scans over an area, frictional tiers were produced.

Risk of colon cancer in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer patients as predicted by fuzzy modeling:Influence of smoking

AIM： To investigate whether a fuzzy logic model could predict colorectal cancer （cRc） risk engendered by smoking in hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer （HNPcc） patients. METHODS： Three hundred and forty HNPcc mismatch repair （MMR） mutation carriers from the creighton University Hereditary cancer Institute Registry were selected for modeling. Age-dependent curves were generated to elucidate the joint effects between gene mutation （hMLH1 or hMSH2）, gender, and smoking status on the probability of developing cRc. RESULTS： Smoking significantly increased cRc risk in male hMSH2 mutation carriers （P 〈 0.05）. hMLH1 mutations augmented cRc risk relative to hMSH2 mutation carriers for males （P 〈 0.05）. Males had a significantly higher risk of cRc than females for hMLH1 non smokers （P 〈 0.05）, hMLH1 smokers （P 〈 0.1） and hMSH2 smokers （P 〈 0.1）. Smoking promoted cRc in a dose-dependent manner in hMSH2 in males （P 〈 0.05）. Females with hMSH2 mutations and both sexes with the hMLH1 groups only demonstrated a smoking effect after an extensive smoking history （P 〈 0.05）. cONcLUSION： cRc promotion by smoking in HNPcc patients is dependent on gene mutation, gender and age. These data demonstrate that fuzzy modeling may enable formulation of clinical risk scores, thereby allowing individualization of cRc prevention strategies.

A 12-week feeding trial with juvenile red drum(Sciaenops ocellatus) fed high-soybean meal(SBM) diets was conducted to investigate a putative biomarker of nutritional imbalance, N-formimino-L-glutamate(FIGLU). Three fishmeal-free, 60% SBM pelleted diets(named B12, Fol, and Met, respectively) were tested to evaluate the effects on growth performance and tissue metabolite profiles of supplementation of vitamin B12(0.012 mg/kg), folate(10 mg/kg), methionine(1 g/kg) respectively, above basal supplementation levels. A fourth SBM-based diet(named B12/Fol/Met) was formulated with a combination of B12, folate, and methionine to attain the above-mentioned target concentrations. A fifth 60% SBM diet(named FWS) with methionine supplementation(1 g/kg above basal supplementation levels), enriched with taurine, lysine and threonine as well as minerals, was also tested. This diet contained formulation targets and additives which have allowed for replacing fishmeal with plant proteins in rainbow trout feeds. control diets included a fishmeal-based diet(named FM), an unsupplemented basal 60% SBM diet(named SBM60), and a “natural” diet(named N) made up of equal parts of fish(cigar minnows), squid and shrimp as a positive reference for growth performance. Formulated feeds contained approximately 37% total crude protein, approximately 14% total crude lipid and were energetically balanced. Standard growth performance metrics were measured, and tissues(liver, muscle) were collected at week 12 to evaluate diet-induced metabolic changes using nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)-based *** results show that the FWS diet outperformed all other SBM diets and the FM diet under all performance metrics(Pcted in fish fed the N diet but was detected in those fed the SBM diets and the FM diet.
