Standardized quantitative measurements of wrist cartilage in healthy humans using 3T magnetic resonance imaging

AIM: To quantify the wrist cartilage cross-sectional area in humans from a 3D magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) dataset and to assess the corresponding reproducibility. METHODS: The study was conducted in 14 healthy volunteers(6 females and 8 males) between 30 and 58 years old and devoid of articular pain. Subjectswere asked to lie down in the supine position with the right hand positioned above the pelvic region on top of a home-built rigid platform attached to the scanner bed. The wrist was wrapped with a flexible surface coil. MRI investigations were performed at 3T(Verio-Siemens) using volume interpolated breath hold examination(VIBE) and dual echo steady state(DESS) MRI sequences. Cartilage cross sectional area(CSA) was measured on a slice of interest selected from a 3D dataset of the entire carpus and metacarpalphalangeal areas on the basis of anatomical criteria using conventional image processing radiology software. Cartilage cross-sectional areas between opposite bones in the carpal region were manually selected and quantified using a thresholding ***: Cartilage CSA measurements performed on a selected predefined slice were 292.4 ± 39 mm2 using the VIBE sequence and slightly lower, 270.4 ± 50.6 mm2, with the DESS sequence. The inter(14.1%) and intra(2.4%) subject variability was similar for both MRI methods. The coefficients of variation computed for the repeated measurements were also comparable for the VIBE(2.4%) and the DESS(4.8%) sequences. The carpus length averaged over the group was 37.5 ± 2.8 mm with a 7.45% between-subjects coefficient of variation. Of note, wrist cartilage CSA measured with either the VIBE or the DESS sequences was linearly related to the carpal bone length. AIM： To assess pre-orthotopic liver transplantation （OLT） factors that could be evaluated pre-operatively or controlled post-operatively associated with hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） recurrence and disease-free survival after liver transplantation （LT）.METHODS： Four hundred and twelve patients transplanted for HCC between 1988 and 1998 in 14 French centers, who survived the postoperative period were studied. Kaplan Meier estimates were calculated for 24 variables potentially associated with recurrence of HCC. Uni- and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify independent predictors of recurrence. RESULTS： Overall 5-year disease-free survival was 57.1%. By univariate analysis, variables associated with disease-free survival were： presence of cirrhosis （P = 0.001）, etiology of liver disease （P = 0.03）, α fetoprotein level （〈 200, 200 to 2000, or 〉 2000; P 〈 0.0001）, y-GT activity （N, N to 2N or 〉 2N; P = 0.02）, the number of nodules （1, 2-3 or ≥ 4; P = 0.02）, maximal diameter of the largest nodule （〈 3 cm, 3 to 5 cm or 〉 5 cm; P 〈 0.0001）, the sum of the diameter of the nodules （〈 3 cm, 3 to 5 cm, 5 to 10 cm or 〉10 cm; P 〈 0.0001）, bilobar location （P = 0.01）, preoperative portal thrombosis （P 〈 0.0001）, peri-operative treatment of the tumor （P = 0.002） and chemoembolization （P = 0.03）, tumor differentiation （P = 0.01）, initial type of calcineurin inhibitor （P = 0.003）, the use of antilymphocyte antibodies （P = 0.02）, rejection episodes （P = 0.003） and period of LT （P 〈 0.0001）. By multivariate analysis, 6 variables were independently associated with HCC recurrence： maximal diameter of the largest nodule （P 〈 0.0001）, time of LT （P 〈 0.0001）, tumor differentiation （P 〈 0.0001）, use of anti-lymphocyte antibody （ATG） or anti-CD3 antibody （OKT3）（P = 0.005）, preoperative portal thrombosis （P = 0.06） and the number of nodules （P = 0.06）. Ultrastructure and Analytical Features of the Sinus Floor Augmentation with Osteograph^(█) and PepGen P-15^(█)

The aim of the present study was to investigate an inorganic bovine-derived hydroxyapatite bone substitute (Osteograph?) mixed with the same biomaterial coated with a synthetic peptide (P-15) analogue of collagen (PepGen P-15?). This blend of bone replacement materials was used for sinus floor augmentation. Assessments were carried out by using histology methods, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and microanalysis (EDX). Ultrastructural and analytical features of the interfaces between the graft material and the peri-biomaterial tissues were evaluated six months after implantation. Our findings clearly show that newly-formed crystallites first develop at the surface of implanted crystals. Histological investigations revealed new bone tissue linking biomaterial particles together. TEM assessments pointed out that lamellar bone was generally separated from the graft material by a layer of woven bone measuring between 1 and 1.5 μm in thickness. Although calcified bone tissue was observed in direct contact with bone filling particles, the presence of mineralized granular material around implanted particles was also noticed. No characteristic periodic striation of mineralized collagen was evident within that mineralized structure. Chemical analyses (TEM-EDX) realized at different locations of newly formed mineralized granular substance along the interface revealed average Ca/P ratios ranging between 1.02 and 1.63. The different, concomitantly occurring, aforementioned structural features of the interfaces strongly suggested that the host responses to the used biomaterial blend resulted from dynamic osseointegration phenomena related to various interfacial mechanisms. Nevertheless, the biological response to the bone graft material appeared clinically and histologically satisfactory.

A challenge in the restoration of historical buildings is strengthened in order to guarantee their durability and the evaluation of the correct identification of materials which need to be the results of consolidation treatments which may be applied during their repair. Methods which make such a complex characterization possible are rare. This paper presents an investigation carried out at the University of Mons （Belgium） in collaboration with the technical support and control unit, restoration directorate, of the Walloon region, aiming to evaluate the effectiveness of consolidants used to strengthen stone masonry. The characterization of the materials is based on a novel semi-destructive scratching method which allows tomographic representation of the strength of the damaged and treated areas. This paper describes the experimental methodology and presents results from laboratory experiments as well as a case study.

Reproductive Potential of Spermophagus niger (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae: Amblycerini) Developing on the Seeds of Two Roselle Varieties in Burkina Faso

In West Africa and particularly in Burkina Faso, Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (Malvaceae) is receiving increasing attention as a crop with potential for making great socio-economic impacts. The biology of Spermophagus niger, recently identified as the main insect pest in the storage of roselle seeds, is poorly known. The present study aimed at comparing the reproductive potential of this insect on the seeds of two roselle varieties Altissima and Sabdariffa, mainly grown in Burkina Faso to identify susceptible/resistant variety to the pest. The results obtained are the first complete data on life history traits of S. niger in laboratory conditions. Overall, they indicated that both seed varieties have similar susceptibility to S. niger. The main life history traits measured did not differ significantly on both varieties (P >0.05). However, the first generation individuals from the Altissima seeds were significantly larger (P = 0.0007 and P <0.0001 for males and females respectively) and weighed more (P <0.0001) than those from the other roselle variety. This result suggests that individuals from the Altissima variety may have a higher seed-damaging potential than those developed in the Sabdariffa variety and this potential might increase over successive generations. The consequences of such findings are discussed with a view to improving the post-harvest storage of roselle seeds and reducing losses in West Africa.

Optimisation of the Postharvest Treatment with Thymol to Control Mango Anthracnose

Anthracnose, caused by the fungus called Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, is the main postharvest disease that affects mango production on Reunion Island. Fruits for the export market are always treated with chemicals. The use of chemical treatment is not in adequation with consumer expectations, and the increasing emergence of fungicide-resistant isolates promotes the development of alternatives methods. The principal objective of this work was to use antimicrobial properties of thymol as an alternative postharvest treatment on mango. Thymol diluated in a penetrating agent solution was effective on mango anthracnose. At a concentration of 0.025%, Thymol limited necrosis development due to pathogens during fruit storage. This treatment can stimulate some of polyphenols biosynthesis involved in the fruit resistance to postharvest disease, particularly thesynthesis of gallic acid and resorcinol. With this final concentration of 0.025% thymol, the treatment did not affect fruit maturation and quality, especially the peel colour and sugar content. Importantly, the treatment did not show any detectable effect on organoleptic qualities of the fruit.

The error-prone V(D)J recombination process generates considerable amounts of nonproductive immunoglobulin(Ig)*** recently demonstrated that aberrant Ig chains lacking variable(V)domains can be produced after nonsense-associated altered splicing(NAS)***,the expression of these truncated Ig polypeptides heightens endoplasmic reticulum stress and shortens plasma cell(PC)*** questions remain regarding the molecular mechanisms underlying this new truncated Ig exclusion(TIE-)checkpoint and its restriction to the ultimate stage of B-cell *** address these issues,we evaluated the extent of NAS of Ig pre-mRNAs using an Ig heavy chain(IgH)knock-in model that allows for uncoupling of V exon skipping from TIE-induced *** found high levels of V exon skipping in PCs compared with B cells,and this skipping was correlated with a biallelic boost in IgH transcription during PC *** analysis further revealed that the skipped V exon turned into a ***,we showed that hypertranscription of Ig genes facilitated V exon skipping upon passive administration of splice-switching antisense oligonucleotides(ASOs).Thus,V exon skipping is coupled to transcription and increases as PC differentiation proceeds,likely explaining the late occurrence of the TIE-checkpoint and opening new avenues for ASO-mediated strategies in PC disorders.

Single Frequency WAAS Augmentation Observations (L1 vs. L5) on a Ground Based GPS L1 C/A Solution

This paper presents observations on the WAAS L1 and L5 signals quality and their impact on the robustness of the navigation solution by quantifying the contributions of each broadcasted differential correction. This work is undertaken with the intent of defining performance benefits of L5 by dual frequency WAAS users and is to provide useful material for Minimum Operational Performance Standard (MOPS) development. In this perspective, a study of the WAAS signal characteristics is first carried out. The information gathered is then used to compare various GPS solutions in terms of frequency diversity, satellite diversity, pseudorange noise and different signal corrections and their impacts. These solutions are compared against a reference standalone GPS solution. All statistics are computed with respect to a post-processed Novatel Waypoint Real-Time Kinematics (RTK) GPS L1/L2 semi-codeless static solution, considered as the reference. A discussion on some simplifications with respect to specifications (i.e. MOPS) that could be considered by receiver manufacturers closes the paper. It is confirmed that the current WAAS navigation message definition is the same on both the L1 and L5 frequencies, the latter further being Manchester coded, thus avoiding data ambiguity. The +5 dB SNR on L5 has minor impacts in terms of reliability and continuous availability in the presented scenarios, but would become especially beneficial in hostile environments, despite a greater number of pulsed interferers. Another demonstration is that the WAAS message varies slightly from one WAAS satellite to another, even if corrections are generated centrally. Finally, it is observed that WAAS and GPS signals pseudorange noise are comparable on a “per frequency” basis.
